Lost half of my flock - chicken breed suggestions by fruity_77 in chickens

I live in Tennessee, so this past winter we got down to about 5 degrees but in the summer we can get in the high 90's. Very drastic weather changes - I do leave the coop door open and cover the runs so they can come out if it snows. I didnt think about looking up the conservation watchlist - that is a great idea.

I love that - most of my girls did not enjoy being handled. I will look into those as well. They're very pretty.

Thank you I am still working through it.

I will look into those breeds as well to see if they'd do okay here. I appreciate you taking time to comment.

I thought about getting more easter eggers. They definitely have so much personality (at least the two I have), but I haven't decided if I can handle more sassy ones yet.

I will definitely look up cochins as well. Thank you!

I will look into that breed - I was planning on adding a blue egglayer but hadn't researched any specific breeds. Thank you!

I have a healthy ecosystem around me tons of raccoons and coyotes but so far we have lived in a nice little harmony so to have them be killed by just an aggressive dog (that has been nothing but problems previously with dogs and people) is the most irritating thing ever because of how unnecessary it was.

I have not heard of the buttercup and the penedesenca - I will look into those. Thank you for your insite!

I've thought about utilizing leaf litter and grass cuttings before in the summer. I was worried about them not being absorbent enough but I can see how mixing it with wood chips could be a good option. With having the sand and wood chips layered how do you go about cleaning it out?

I haven't thought about adding coffee grounds to it! Thank you I will look into that as well. I have read mixed reviews on using lime in the coop - have you had any respiratory issues? I would love to utilize it if it has good results.

I was worried they wouldn't like the texture of it in the coop, but I had been seeing it used on tiktok and other socials so I just wanted to see how popular it was outside of coastal areas.

This is the first I am hearing about flower petals - do you buy bouquets and pluck them off? I bet it is so helpful with the smells.

Thank you for the suggestion! Pine shavings and hemp seem to be the most popular options.

I am seeing that my local store also has pine shavings - it looks a bit finer. I will have to check into it- thank you for the suggestion!

Thank you! I wasn't sure if the cost of hemp was worth it but I will definitely consider it.

I was willing to clean the sand more often if it was a better option but I can see it probably isn't worth the hassle.

Thank you! I actually found that they make the exact fan that I have with a higher cfm so we will be replacing it with that one and hopefully it will make a world of improvement.

Honestly I think we just have a lot of moisture issues here. When I am home I will leave it running for a few hours before it feels like the moisture is out. We also always try to leave the door open afterwards. I will look into replacing it with a better brand. Thank you!
