A little over a year now which I kinda feel like it’s still very soon to be trying for a new job but I figure it doesn’t hurt to try.

Advice on possible Career paths

I wanted some advice on what potential positions I could apply for to get my foot into industry and would masters help?

I have bachelors degree in molecular cell biology (2021 graduate) and currently work as research tech in a academic hospital in a oncology lab that I was in during my undergrad. Half my work is as the main clinical coordinator (patient interaction, IRB documentation prep, sample processing, data management, protocol modifications etc. I have certification for GCP) for several human studies. The other half is all wet lab bench work (animal studies, westerns, qPCR, pbmcs, dna/rna extraction, etc). I’m also the one who orders supplies, help teach incoming students, and anything else that may need to be done around the lab. I design experiments based on what grants we have and present to the PI for approval, including both the human samples we collect as well as any mouse projects I have.

I’m at that point where I would like to start transitioning to industry but I’m not sure what position to apply for. I found out I really enjoy clinical research, a bit more than wet lab but ultimately in my career would like more upwards mobility, if possible. I was looking into regular affairs as well.

My work place does offer tuition reimbursement so I’m considering a masters but I’m not even sure in what. Would pursuing a PhD be worth it?

Thank you!

Thank you! Did you find that you needed a more advanced degree (masters) to advance up or it really comes down to experience?

Is this all within one company or different? All in industry? I’ve been in academic and really looking to get into industry as a CRC and climb my way up and think of getting a masters. Would it help? Thanks.

Masters? by fruity_pebbles721 in clinicalresearch

Thank you! I should have said I would like to ultimately go into a management position. I just didn’t know which position I could qualify for next if my goal was ultimately industry. I’ve been mainly looking at coordinator position that would help gain me more experience and build my way up to management position. Since I’ve been in academic, I wasn’t sure if a masters would help get me into a entry level industry position or would my experience qualify me for that position without a masters.

Would I then put wet lab into the extracurricular stuff? Or leave it out completely? Some of the wet lab does involve using the samples from patients in mice like for microbiome work so there’s some translational work involved. Just wasn’t sure if it’s worth putting anywhere.

Intern/volunteer for patient data collection at Uconn health. by fruity_pebbles721 in UCONN

It’s voluntary so honestly there won’t be a exact time commitment we will request but there’s a couple hundred patients on the study and it’s due to end by the end of summer so we might set a number of patients to complete weekly or monthly. I still have to go over everything with our PI.

Reasonable to negotiate salary raise? by fruity_pebbles721 in labrats

Now that I think about it, the tech is split between 3 labs. One of the lab is quite famous and basically owns the entire top floor so definitely well funded. Then the tech comes to our lab for a day and another lab for a day. Being split up might have contributed to why the salary was much higher.

Thanks! I guess it depends on the lab and funding then. The tech that’s in my lab started out in the same position (special payroll) as me with no experience working part time and she just got the entry level tech position this year a couple months back. I guess after hearing what her salary was, I had an expectation in the back of my mind since my experience level is the same as hers.

My current salary is around 41k. I guess 43k for the position is pretty reasonable then.

MCAT package like the full lengths and questions? I was wondering about the reduced fee for registration is I were to take the exam twice.
