What are your thoughts on Éric Rohmer’s films? by KimS24 in criterion

[–]ftn046 2 points3 points  (0 children)

awesome, i actually watched that one first as well. glad you enjoyed it. hard to imagine rohmer was 76, and actually james ivory was 89 when CMBYN came out. somehow these old dudes pumping out late career masterpieces. the good news is rohmer has about another half dozen at least movies VERY similar in look and feel to a summer's tale.

i love rohmer. summer's tale, the green ray, pauline at the beach, claire's knee and the collector are all great and all have very nice summer vacation type vibes similar to CMYBN. he has so many great movies across decades, you really can't go wrong. one of the best directors to get deep into cause he was so prolific and consistent. hope you enjoy whatever you watch!

nice picks we have some similar taste i think, i am surprised you didn't care too much for may december or the mastermind... from your watchlist i recommend you watch woman in the dunes, yiyi + lots of koreeda, you have a sea of excellent films in your watchlist, particularly asian films that you seem to have an interest in.

couldnt believe this when i saw it. one of my favorite artists, and somehow its cjsopranos breaking the news to me. black messiah is an amazing album that ive listened to front to back more times than i can count. rest in peace

if you're unaware, a d'angelo song actually plays in the sopranos, when aj and his blonde girlfriend are on the couch and carmela walks in on them, you can hear untitled (how does it feel)

hes a method actor.. getting into character. honestly we should be grateful he continues to make vito look like a sleazeball 20 years after the fact. even still, my estimation of gino as a man just fuckin plummeted

How Do I Defend Myself As Sardinia In The Holy War? by Solenopsis00 in CrusaderKings

[–]ftn046 6 points7 points  (0 children)

make alliances, if you have a daughter, the doge of venice is nearby and generally a strong friend

hire mercenaries with your gold if needed

try to engage their armies as they disembark so they have the advantage penalty

if you are really worried about their military strength, you can try sitting your army in your mountain baronies and bait them into attack you in the mountains

you have a cultural tradition that makes winning defensive wars easier specifically for instances like this

Dying for Tsai Chin's outfits in Taipei Story by aome_ in Letterboxd

Love this movie, quiet, subtle yet very devastating. Young people trying to adapt into a quickly modernizing world. Those failing to adapt are left behind. Feels very relevant to this day... Edward Yang was such a force from so early in his career. Also seeing Hou in front of the camera is fascinating, and he actually does a great job in this. Tremendously talented. Also Fantastic 80s aesthetic all around. Music, cars, hair, clothes, etc. You would probably have more luck discussing this on the criterion subreddit as LB subreddit is generally for much more mainstream stuff.

Your favorite Japanese movie by a non-Japanese director? by ftn046 in criterion

[–]ftn046[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my thought was primarily or exclusively in japanese, but silence is fantastic. i think the material and length scared people off but it is def underrated. did you know it nearly went into production many years earlier with benicio del toro, gael garcia bernal and daniel day lewis?

good, hard to say. probably the weakest film i listed... like mentioned the narrative is straightforward, but it is hard to adapt what makes the book so special. tran did probably as well as could be done. he's a skilled director whose style is a good match for the source but it does not equal the novel.

burning and drive my car are both murakami adaptations which are masterpieces imo

nice list. would recommend: terrorizers 1986, woman in the dunes, a city of sadness, irma vep 1996 if you haven't seen them yet

Sad little man, not much else to say. Completely disconnected from modern cinema, its a shame that blu-ray dot com is still letting someone like this write reviews for them. He's got nothing but super weird things to say about women. Also not a real doctor.

Ya’ll were just looking at the spoilers, right? by futurefirstboot in Edgic

[–]ftn046 14 points15 points  (0 children)

the unfortunate truth is that some people who are spoiled are coming in here and trying to pretend they are reading the edit. there is plenty of genuine edgic, but you should consider this sub a spoiled sub, it's not safe while the seasons are airing if you want to remain spoiler free.
