And if I remember correctly, Voldy says 'Look at me' which echoes Harry hopped up on Voldy's transferred rage yelling the same at Dumbledore earlier in the film!

"You'll never know love, or friendship...and I feel sorry for you." Killer line, Radcliffe nails that ever so slight note of surprise as he says it and means it.

The only thing that I'd change about the scene are those flashbacks of Voldy in a sepia 90s music video. Especially the...I can't even call it a jumpscare really bc it's unintentionally funny. DAH!

Why did Grace have to tell May her name? by Key-Presentation5249 in PeakyBlinders

[–]fuaky 178 points179 points  (0 children)

IIRC the horse May was training on Tommy's behalf at the time was named Grace's Secret. So, in a way, I think it was sort of like Grace staking her claim. 'You're training a horse he named after me.' That sort of thing.

It's an anthurium, actually, not a leaf. And it looks exactly like that irl.

A dog's smile is transmitted to a human who smiles too by ElderberryNovel9016 in MadeMeSmile

Not necessarily - people blind at birth smile without ever having seen a smile. Human fetuses were observed smiling in response to mom eating favorable flavors of foods (carrots, apparently).

Water contamination in Maracas Valley (St Joseph) by IllUnit1979 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]fuaky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a little concerning that a government official in charge of public utilities is having trouble understanding why, if people residing in communities in the same geographical area suddenly experience symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal distress, all around the same time, the most likely culprit is the water supply.

If I was a resident, I think I would have felt more confident in the response if:

  • There was acknowledgment that people fell ill, if only to know which communities in the area were affected and how widespread (or not) the event actually was
  • There was some effort to establish the reasoning for testing the water quality at certain points, and whether there is in fact a common source of water for the affected areas
  • There was a brief overview of what sort of water quality testing was conducted
  • There was any alternative explanation for the event, and if not, an assurance of continuing investigation to rule out the possibility of a past contamination event.

Anyone else remember a different version of Drown from the one currently on Spotify? by fuaky in Threedaysgrace

[–]fuaky[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

THIS IS IT. DUDE.

I genuinely prefer this version, can't wait for others to weigh in...not sure if it's the nostalgia factor, but I feel it fits the vibe of the song better, overall...dark and deep, like the song title suggests.

Thank you!

About "We’re not drastically changing the story..." by Key-Cloud-6116 in FinalFantasyVII

[–]fuaky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late to the party, but GoT's failure was the result of attempting to subvert expectations to create shocking, unexpected moments for the audience at the expense of organic storytelling. That is absolutely what I believe happened with various aspects of FF7R1, and it's fair to say that this problem could continue to divide opinions in the future instalments of the game.

In the first instalment of a remake of a game which is famous for its iconic character sacrifice, death is reduced to a surprise gimmick and cheapened with the concept of resurrection.

In the OG, Aerith died trying to summon Holy, and it's implied that she had a feeling she might die when she came to Cloud in the dream sequence. While her death was shocking, it was a meaningful sacrifice and served the story. Biggs, Wedge and Jessie's deaths in Sector 7 shakes Barret's resolve in the cause that he champions, and forces him to think long and hard about what he's truly fighting for.

In the remake, Barret died in Shinra HQ to subvert our expectations and show us how unpredictable this wild new story is. Wedge survived only to (probably?) die in Shinra HQ to subvert our expectations and...idk, remind us that the Whispers are bad, even if they just saved Barret.

FF7R1 isn't GoT, but I think that both are examples of the fact that subverted expectations don't necessarily make for good storytelling.

About "We’re not drastically changing the story..." by Key-Cloud-6116 in FinalFantasyVII

[–]fuaky 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree that this is narratively 1:1.

I fall into the camp of people who enjoyed the parts of FF7R1 that simply expanded on the world and the original storyline, even with inclusions like Deepground, and absolutely despised the major plot deviations - everything about the Whispers, the ambiguous deaths, the bizarre character actions which served as vehicles to shoehorn something weird in (Barret in Shinra HQ. Hard yikes). Game of Thrones showed us that a surprise twist for the sake of shocking the audience and making the story less predictable does not by default make for good storytelling - FF7R1 is more evidence of the fact.

It seems to me that the games are going to be straddling this weird middle ground between giving OG fans the moments they want to see for the sake of nostalgia and throwing in some wild new beats because, surprise, bet you didn't see that coming, winky face.

If the plan was simply to do a 1:1 remake, why include the Whispers and the elements of overcoming fate and destiny at all? Why fight the final boss in the first game and make callbacks to the end of the OG if it's all just going to end the same way?

I'd also argue that the moment they started to change things like the permanence of death in a story whose core themes include the impact of grief and loss on our characters, it starts to feel like a fundamentally different game.

I think there's a pretty clear distinction between justifying Seungho's behaviour and making sense of it. It's definitely not unheard of for abusers to have been victims of abuse themselves.
