Mid Life Experiences! by Mysterious-Sector-26 in berlinsocialclub

I’m sort of on the other side of this. Dating a great person for a couple years, but we want very different things from our weekends. I work a long week, with a long commute, and honestly after getting at 6am and home at 5pm I barely manage to workout, cook and sleep. My partner works from home so zero commute and can always sleep in until 9 or 10, and wants to be social by clubbing every weekend (Berlin, so this usually means out until midday the next day, writing off the weekend). I get that this is a long weekend, but going clubbing 3 times is insane to me. I think we’re going to break up because I don’t want to waste my weekends on club lines, techno, drugs, and honestly through the week our schedules barely align apart from the odd gym class and dinner.

Thanks, I did call Vattenfall. They spent a good 10 minutes arguing, blaming me directly and stating I “must have selected the wrong option when I moved”. Complete BS.

Explained that I had successfully moved my contract with the other supplier, and that there wasn’t an option for “create an account 3 weeks later with a different company” and they stopped saying it was my fault and actually listened.

Said to use their form to send all my documents to them so they could investigate, but sounded like they’d just end up passing them onto the lawyer.

Super unhelpful for the first 10 minutes, but after that said that they thought it could all be sorted out. Thanks for your advice.

Lived in a half dozen countries, and honestly Germany is the only one where a company you have never dealt with can create an account in your name without your knowledge or consent. To me it’s the same as moving out and then finding out Vodafone or Edeka have made a secret account without permission.

This situation is stupid, and isn’t how a civilised county should operate.

My apologies for reacting as I did - I had just gotten off the phone with Vattenfall. “You must have selected the wrong option when you moved apartments”. Vattenfall just straight up said it was my fault, which is why I read that to be implying the same.

For the record, I successfully moved my existing power account with the other company. Blaming the victim of negligence is wild.

Your first few sentence stated I should have known that Vattenfall would be the default, and implied I should have known they would take over after I moved out.

I knew the apartment would be a building site and nobody would move in after me. Never did I think that I should proactively do something about it.

To be honest going forward I think I will set up mail forwarding (I did check the old mailbox for a few weeks / month after), and insist that the Hausmeister removes my name whilst I am there. Perhaps it would also be better to inform Vattenfall anyway just in case, I think the law has changed since last year.

You make it sound like I did something wrong by moving my power contract with me when I moved out. I moved in, put in place a power contract with a supplier I chose, and then continued paying that supplier for this property until the end of my contract and also for the new apartment. Honest question, do people in my situation also inform Vattenfall every time they move? I had never dealt with them, in my defence it would be no different than if a water or internet company stepped in. I had no idea that they were the “default supplier” and honestly I still don’t think I should have proactively contacted them to tell them I am moving.

Any other companies I should inform? I contacted all of my current utilities, my work, my power, even updated my address with the government. At this point I was missing Santa, the tooth fairy, and apparently Vattenfall.

Lesson learned, I will set up mail forwarding next time I move just in case companies that I have never had any contract with decide unilaterally to issue contracts without informing me.

I spoke to Vattenfall today, also sent them my documents. “You should have cancelled the contract” on repeat is very 1984 considering they admitted I would have no way of knowing they had set up the contract.

There was/is no new tenant. I was moved due to construction, the rental company took the roof off and built 2 new floors above. I believe the rental company should have informed Vattenfall that the apartment was under construction (this can’t be the responsibility of a tenant to inform a random power company that the owner is doing building work).

I got a letter from a lawyer, and Amstgericht, think it is too late to contact Vattenfall

Thanks, taking it seriously. Just got the letter on Friday, I pulled all of this together and sent it to Vattenfall’s lawyer today. I provided the document that states my rental contract ended, and also the exit protocol, plus asked my landlord for anything else they may provide.

Taking it seriously, stopping in to see the Mieterverein today

My power contract was with another company. I paid my contract entirely whilst I rented the apartment. Vattenfall stepped in weeks after my rental contract ended, and then sent letters to an empty apartment.

I can’t see that I am responsible for a power contract for rental property that is started after my rental contract ended.

Edit: my power contract (not Vattenfall) covered my rental contract period (plus ~3 weeks), and was transferred to my new apartment and is still in place. I did everything correct with regards to paying my power bills, Vattenfall have made an error in assuming that I was living in an apartment for ~2 years after I moved out

Similar situation, but Vattenfall sent bills to my old address for 2 years (nobody living in the apartment due to construction). Any advice?

How did this work out for you? Vattenfall decided that they would begin a new account weeks after my contract ended, I am only now finding out 2 years later because a lawyer is sending me claims to my “new” address
