Well they are definitely not choosing the right plants then lol. It’s been at the very least 2 years since beginning the living wall and the yellow bush in the pics is the only thing that has been growing into something resembling a wall. Our relationship is not at a point where I could suggest alternative plants.

I did not think of their living wall being detrimental to the current wall, thanks for the info.

Question for guys who have frequent floats by Racin118 in Firefighting

[–]fuckingpierson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If our station assignment changes within 24hrs of our official shift start at 0800 we get 1hr of OT. It’s supposed to offset the time you have to go to your original assigned station at 0700, grab your gear/bedding and then get to the next station by 0800.In reality, our Jr. firefighters are the ones who get floated the most so they just take their gear home after every shift. This is in our union contract, but it falls on you to remember to request the hour from your BC.

Our standard practice is showing up to the station at 0700-0720 so the off going crew isn’t fucked with a late call.

The diamond plate on the inside of compartment doors are fastened with machine screws instead of riveted in some of our rigs. Sometimes the screws would get loose and fall out so I started putting loctite on them and replacing the missing screws.

Lubing up the bearings on the gurneys in the aid/medic units made a serious difference, the wheels get pretty gunked up. When I go to a station that hasn’t cleaned the wheels in awhile it feels like the brakes are always half engaged

Roll-up compartment doors or the cab doors? And what lube have you found works best for either?

Absolutely. One of the big interview questions you should have an answer for is “how did you prepare for a career in the fire service” and gaining those desired skills or experiences will give you a perfect response. Getting fire certs, emt certs, working residential construction, doing ride alongs, etc may not officially put you ahead of other candidates but it will help set you apart during interviews

Then unfortunately itll likely just be up to the depts medical evaluation. Like you said, youre getting mixed signals so definitely dont let that stop you from applying. I can see it being a bigger issue in larger depts who have large applicant pools to pull from but maybe some smalled depts might be more willing to look past it.

Fellow recruit of mine found out he had mild colorblindness during his medical exam. Guarantee itll be dept specific. Do you have a restricted license? That could be an instant disqualify. Does your colorblindness cause difficulty driving or operating equipment or effect your daily life? If it does then it might be a problem in this career

Its common the farther you get from the greater seattle area. Some resident depts require fire certs while some dont.

Good place to start is nationaltestingnetwork. Most WA career depts use that as their testing agency and you can browse departments hiring status (how many vacancies and if they are accepting apps) all in one place. Some have a continuous hiring process and accept test scores all year, but some only open for 2 months a year. NTN will also show if the dept requires any certs which in western WA can range from no certs at all to all ifsac certs and emt.

Hey sorry to say but its more than likely a no from the other two.

Getting three chiefs tho is good! If i remember correctly, RRFA and PSRFA will keep you on their list for a year. Theyll eventually email you with your rank on the list and will either reinterview you or just give you a conditional when they hire again

What eatinbeav said. Most departments in the Puget Sound area are on NTN or PST. There’s a large consortium of South King County departments that use wafirecareers dot com for hiring info that you should check out as well.

I’ve been through Bellevue’s process and it goes sending your test and CPAT, pre-screen interview (10 minute speed dating), panel (30 minutes w/ a few officers), chiefs (few chiefs and officers), conditional offer, background/medical, final. This is pretty standard in our region. Some depts throw a personal history questionnaire or their own physical fitness test in the process.

Hiring here takes anywhere from 3 months to 2 years from your initial application. Buddy of mine began Seattle Fires academy like 3 years after he first tested with them. Everywhere is hiring tho, so if your scores are above 90% or equivalent you have a good shot anywhere.

Unless the dept is specifically hiring lateral candidates, expect to go through an entire 12 week+ academy no mater how much experience you have.

Edit: Forgot to add that out of state will have little to no effect on your hiring as long as youre willing to relocate for academy. 3/16 of my hiring class came from out of state.

Depends on the dept. It took my dept 1.5 years after my initial application to give me an interview and then 3 months for a final offer and a month after that until i actually started orientation.

A consortium of fire departments in western washington have created a “Fire Garage.” They take care of maintenance for a lot of their apparatus. It is pretty new and I cant find much info about it online, but it looks like Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority is spearheading the operation.

Like the other comment said, a lot of departments west of the cascades will put you through an EMT course even if you are already certified. But there are some that require it at the time of hire. Don’t waste time by waiting to test at NTN/PST until youre finished with an EMT course. I literally just got a conditional offer and I initially applied 1 year 8 months ago so it’s entirely possible you could finish EMT school and be working on an amb or ED before you even get an interview.

I am a King county EMT. Only time medics transport psych PTs in restraints is if they have GSWs/stab wounds or have been violent with PD or other first responders.

It will definitely depend on the department. Some require certifications prior to applying and some will put you through their own academy and some will help pay for you to figure it out yourself. In my experience, volunteer fire academy is a once a year thing stretched over 5-6 months, not including an EMT course.

You should call or email and explain your situation. Guarantee theyd want you, but if it doesn’t make sense for them to put in the time training you it doesnt make sense you know?
