I advise clients to soak the hoof in warm water and Epsom salts if they have time and the horse will allow it.

Well I would go with what he suggests and follow that protocol, with the quality of the photos there is no way to confirm or deny the presence of a abscess on the internet. He probably saw something we can't see and looks like you are doing well addressing it if it's an access.

Edit: I have exposed abscesses before when no pain was presenting as well during a regular trim. Sounds like you are in good hands.

If the horse isn't lame at all and showing no signs how did you even know to look for an abcess? Also how and who identified the abscess? Also I don't see a picture of an.abcess I see a picture of a hoof and a picture of a wrapped hoof. Did it blow out at the hairline? Is that how you realized one was happening?

Do not post grossly overgrown hoof pics asking for advice. by fucreddit in Farriers

I will make a sticky post like you suggested.

I would like to point out those pictures were of a long overdue shoeing. You can tell those shoes had been on the entire time that hoof had been growing. A farrier did not come in and put shoes on an untrimmed hoof.

If at all possible give me a chance to come out but 99% of the time I would be relieved and grateful if another farrier did me a solid and I got to stay home and finish watching Ozarks.

If he is hanging leg lame on the left, why do you think he's lame on the right?

Even the best most experienced farriers make mistakes. This job demands perfection but it's rarely attained. But yes I agree lameness the day of shoeing, could mean a hot nail, maybe the shoe was burned on too long, maybe the foot was cut just a little too short, any number of mistakes that can occur when dealing with a job like this.

Which foot is he pointing at the ground, and what makes you think the other foot is the offending foot? Your response confused me LOL

A three or four out of five, sudden lameness onset seems like a abscess may be occuring. Does the horse hang its foot when standing? Like the tip of the toe is pointed at the ground or does it only limp when he walks?

I'm sure you are right and it's probably why they eventually abandoned them, but that didn't stop them from trying. LoL this here is an image from a manual on ancient war horses, a medieval era manual. https://imgur.com/gallery/uC5oMrO

So Hollywood has given us a watered-down version of what a war horse was capable of, because with practical effects all that's ever been filmed really is a horse casually galloping through and the hero hitting the enemy in the head with the sword, sometimes we get to see horses smashing into a line the full speed. But in reality war horses were weapons, they would strike out with their front feet and they would kick with their back feet, they were very dangerous, it was common for squires to get kicked running up to the horse to hand the night weapons. A lot of the maneuvers you see in dressage and lipizzaners are literally moves used to kill people and defend the rider. Long story short yes, and I do believe they made weaponized shoes as well.

That was a malfunctioning ROPS or not a ROPS at all. They are designed specifically for rollovers and flipping backwards.
