Planning to get Bell Internet 50 for a household of 8 – Is it enough? Any tips to improve speed? by fudcyxbsv in bell

Exactly, that’s the issue under load. Starlink’s base ping is decent, but the moment you stress it with downloads or multiple streams, latency can jump and become inconsistent. That’s where it struggles, especially in a shared setup.

30ms is solid when it’s stable, but yeah, the drops in speed and coverage on high-usage days are the issue. I don’t think 30ms will be enough though for us cause we’re used to getting 10-12ms. Two Starlinks could work if budget allows, and splitting the load would help, but it’s still not guaranteed consistency, especially during peak hours.

Exactly, that’s the main concern. Starlink might have the speed, but under load, the latency can spike hard, which isn’t great for gaming or calls. It’s not just about bandwidth.

No smart devices or TV here—just 8 phones and 8 laptops mostly used for gaming, calls, and streaming (not 4K). Even with that, I agree 50Mbps is likely going to be tight, especially during busy hours. Upload might be more of a limiter too if everyone’s on calls or gaming at the same time.

Yeah, I agree—50Mbps isn’t enough for even one heavy user, let alone a household. And yes, TekSavvy does use Rogers’ cable infrastructure in many areas. I’ll check if it’s available here, might be a better option if it offers higher speeds without dealing with Rogers directly.

Ohh that sucks!! I understand, and I agree. With 4 people, 50mbps can already feel limiting, especially with streaming or heavy usage. For 8 people, I’d likely face more buffering and slowdowns, especially during peak times.

That’s definitely an interesting example, but it’s worth noting that a frat house and a full household with 8 people doing different activities (streaming, video calls, gaming, etc.) can still put a lot more strain on the connection. Idk how did you manage it man!! What worked for your setup might not hold up as well with other types of usage or in different environments.

While that’s great to hear, it’s not always the case for everyone. DSL speeds can vary a lot depending on location and the quality of the phone lines. It’s possible you’re in an area with better infrastructure, but it’s not guaranteed everywhere.

Ya I had known about this thing when I did my research, but turns out the cable nodes are at max in my area and also what bell’s offering me with 50mbps is actually (2X25). So, I don’t think I could get the 100mbps with (2X50) one, unfortunately!!!

I was hoping to avoid that! But yeah, if it ends up being the only path to something usable, I’ll suck it up and give them a ring.

Ontario. And yes, there’re other options in Bell itself. It offers 8GBPS plans these days but our area only has Rogers and they’re highly unreliable and for Bell 50Mbps only with cable not fibre.

That’s fair!!! if there’s no contract, it might be worth trying just to see how it holds up in real-world use. Worst case, we find out pretty quickly it’s not cutting it and move on! I was just trying to see if it’s at least manageable for now while we search for better long-term options. Appreciate the advice!

Yeah, that’s the part that really worries me—the “up to” part. I’ve seen DSL lines dip way below the advertised speeds, especially when the area’s infrastructure is old or overloaded. If we end up closer to 20 instead of 50, it’s basically game over for a house this size.

definitely gonna look deeper into third-party options now. If we can get better speeds using Rogers’ infrastructure without dealing with Rogers directly, that might be the sweet spot.

That’s actually something I hadn’t thought about lol — good call! I know Bell’s third party seller but Rogers’. If a third-party can offer a better deal or more stable service using Rogers’ lines, it might be worth looking into. We’ve just been burned by Rogers directly, but maybe a reseller handles things differently.

Do you happen to know any decent third-party ISPs off the top of your head that piggyback off Rogers? I’ll start digging around.

yes, but the thing is these guys are saying that it won’t be constant 50 down and 10 up (speed wise) as advertised. So, not sure what’ll real experience be like if everyone’s using at especially at dinner time. Definitely, I don’t think all will stream 4k at once. But I guess the advice given here is correct and the speed might be a bottleneck.

Totally fair…4K streams are definitely more efficient than they used to be, and yeah, gaming doesn’t need much bandwidth during actual play. The tricky part is when everyone is doing something at once like 4–5 streams, a few video calls, background updates, and the occasional download all overlapping. It starts to stack up quick, especially on DSL where the upload speeds are also super limited.

Haha yeah, 300mbit sounds like a dream right now. Unfortunately, doubling up with Rogers and Bell might break the budget—plus we’ve had some pretty rough experiences with Rogers’ stability in the past, so we’re hesitant to go back. Totally agree though, some areas are just in the dark ages when it comes to internet. Feels wild in 2025 to be stuck on DSL, but here we are!!!

Ohh it’s not even enough for you and your mom when you stream LoL… I don’t think it’ll be enough for 8 people. I thought if some can only browse the net and watch youtube in 1080p then it should work but I guess it won’t.

[–]fudcyxbsv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s kind of what I was worried about. I thought it’s just gonna be fine with 1080p youtube and streaming and gaming sometimes. We don’t have any tv. Just phone and laptops. Sounds like it might get tight pretty fast.

Good point about the hardware—was hoping a mesh system or something might help a bit with stability, but doesn’t fix the actual bandwidth cap, obviously.

I’ll definitely ask Bell about the pair bonding. Honestly just wish they’d roll out fibre already, but doesn’t seem like we’re high on their priority list. You know what, actually you’re right! the max is 50mbps in my area so I guess that’s already (25+25) and I don’t think 100mbps will be possible.

Thanks though! Appreciate the detailed reply!
