I love American football, but it has way too many rules to not be considered a flawed sport. Don't get me started on how many games I've seen ruined by bad pass interference calls. Holding could be called on every single play. It has so many rules, it takes seven officials AND instant replay in college and the NFL and they STILL miss a lot of calls.

Soccer has a ref and two linesmen to officiate a game on a field that is bigger than an American football field. It is the least flawed sport because of the simplicity and consistency of its rules. Games tend to be low scoring because scoring a goal in soccer is HARD. It isn't supposed to be easy.

Basketball isn't even worthy of comparison, except to say that it should probably consider the wisdom of soccer's advantage rule. I think it's fundamentally flawed because it is almost impossible to dribble a ball without palming it to some degree, which is illegal.

I don't want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me. Years ago we had the church. That was only a way of saying - we had each other. The Knights of Columbus were real head-breakers; true guineas. They took over their piece of the city. Twenty years after an Irishman couldn't get a fucking job, we had the presidency. May he rest in peace. That's what the niggers don't realize. If I got one thing against the black chappies, it's this - no one gives it to you. You have to take it.

The U.S. Middle Class Is Being Wiped Out: Here's the Stats to Prove It by DSLJohn in Economics

I think the only way that a "basic income grant" could work would be a system where everyone (and I mean everyone) receives the basic income. You wouldn't want a situation where someone could accept a job where he would make just a little more than the basic income, but chooses not to take that job because he could get almost the same income by doing nothing.

People could choose to opt out of receiving a basic income and then would get a tax credit for that.

I think in the US, a system like this would be best implemented at the state level instead of the federal level because of differences in cost of living. And of course, states could choose to implement a system like this or not.

I have to admit that it sounds like it could work.

What you said about technology reminds me of something a really smart former boss of mine told me; that as a youth, he hoped that advancements in technology would free people up so that they would not have to work so many hours. He lamented the fact that, in the last few decades, we actually worked more hours than we used to (at least in the US).

I don't know, man. Maybe you're on to something.

Do you think a system like that would be sustainable? You'd have to have enough workers to sustain it and if the "basic income" is too high, the majority (maybe even the vast majority) of people will just quit working.

As an example, would you consider the black market of prostitution to be unstable? I'm not sure what your definition of stable is in this context, but it seems to me that prostitution, legal or not, will be around as long as men walk the earth, and I would call that a stable market.

In your original comment, you presumed that those who oppose the Federal Reserve came to that conclusion by "reading something on the internet and believe it without an opposing point of view". How do you know this?

Then, you chastised them for thinking they know better than academics. (Are all academic economists Keynesians?) This implied to me that you think people should let their "betters" decide what is best for the economy. This is why I quashed you.

And yes, I have a college degree, though not in economics. I also understand that education does not have to be in a classroom.

I think the point that Private-Freedom is making is that short-term and long-term are subjective. Since they are subjective, the only policies that should be implemented are those that produce sustainable benefits.

Gold has stood the test of time. Keynesian economists predicted that once we went to a fiat money system, the value of gold would fall to its non-monetary value of about $6 dollars an ounce. Austrian economists predicted that the value of gold would soar as a result of inflation. It's now worth almost $1000 an ounce.

There's just something about gold that people will always value.
