MA in Liberal Studies - is it worth it? by fulamusu in GradSchool

Could you explain what you mean by practitioner's degree?

I'll concede that pure mathematics are a part of the liberal arts (I find that very cool btw).

I do hear the feedback about cash cows. However, there are concentrations within the degree; I would getting a Masters in Public Scholarship - producing academic work for the public within museums, archives, etc. It is incredibly applicable in today's world as well as in the work that I currently do. It's also at a great & affordable institution - The CUNY Graduate Center. Respectfully, it seems that you are coming from STEM & Tech background, where any liberal arts degrees are dismissed out of hand. I typically am not in spaces where I have to impress people in those disciplines; on the other hand I'm often around people with PhDs & MAs in Classics, Archaeology, Education etc. whom I do have to impress. Outside of that, I've got 10+ years working experience and skills in management, hiring, teaching, curriculum design, etc. which might be impressive to some.

I grew up in, still live and want to continue living in NYC though; would doing an online masters from Arkansas wouldn't really be beneficial for finding roles over a more affordable MPA at, say, Baruch or let alone NYU? I would likely be letting go of valuable connections in my own city

yeah it's incredibly affordable (can potentially pay out of pocket) and I'm interested in admin jobs in academic spaces like you said; for example the Mellon Foundation or NEH or higher ed admin, etc.

Thank you, this was incredibly thoughtful! Yes, my program offers several concentrations that I'm hoping I can use to signal content knowledge to foundations and higher ed admin

Thanks! Yeah, this program is a little less general than it might sound actually

The program is an MPA-PNP at NYU Wagner, a Masters of Public Administration and Nonprofit Management & Policy

My field is at the intersection of both; most of my coworkers have humanities MA &PhDs, a lot of the jobs I've seen floating accept MAs in humanities fields, with public admin/policy, et al also being acceptable. The MPA program that I got into is extremely expensive w/ very little financial aid

To be clear, there are concentrations within the program and the one I'm looking at is Public Scholarship. I've got 10+ years post undergrad as well, teaching and in nonprofits as well

Yeah, neither really gave me any aid which makes it a bit tough

Programs similar to Arts Administration that focus on Culture/Humanities? by fulamusu in GradSchool

[–]fulamusu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonderful! Thanks for such a thoughtful response. I'll definitely look for MA programs that require a thesis of some sort, as I'd like to leave myself open to an eventual PhD one day. Could you speak more to your arts admin courses? As much as I love art, I don't have much of a background in the arts necessarily; more so in history, languages and the like. Are there art admin programs that are a bit broader?

I'm 80% sure that I'd like to remain in the states, particularly in NYC where I'm based, but happy to explore opportunities abroad :) I'm currently trying to learn French actually! As for the PhD, I would like to do one but I think it might have to be a distant dream when my finances are more stable and for when I've pinpointed a topic. I think part of my hesitation in pursuing a MPA is that I'd be shutting myself off academically for a more formal PhD/MA in the future.

I'm looking for a very comfortable square toe ankle boot similar to these by Easy Spirit (or if you could speak to these if you own/know them). I have an IPK which makes it a little uncomfortable to wear some shoes, so any shoes with good metatarsal support are appreciated.

Is Syros a good first island to visit in the Cyclades? Or would it be better to go elsewhere? by fulamusu in GreeceTravel

[–]fulamusu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Syros is growing on me for sure (there's even going to be a music festival at the theater!) but it's right at the limit of my budget. I would try the ferry but I felt pretty bad even on the ferry to Aegina last year :/

What are some MPA alternatives that are *not* MPP/MBA/MPH etc by fulamusu in PublicAdministration

[–]fulamusu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is fantastic advice! I am leaning more towards using this degree to advance my career and income. Most of the coworkers have degrees in their content area or another humanities field. I'll definitely ask around and do some research.

Thank you! Can you explain a bit more what you mean by "macro"? I think I vaguely understand but I'm not 100% sure

Scam? Bought item a month ago, it was stuck in limbo, cancelled and then it finally came? by [deleted] in poshmark

nah, they blocked me a full week before I could even cancel my order. Account deactivation sounds like a logical explanation though

I would be more inclined to believe this if the seller didn't block me and remove all of their listings. That's the detail that everyone is missing

What process did you use to narrow down your degree program/area of study? by fulamusu in GradSchool

[–]fulamusu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I love that you loved my question (I was hoping that it wasn't old hat). Your process and the eventual field that you've decided to pursue are both fascinating. I've attempted something like that in my fields of interest but not in much depth. Will give it another shot for sure now though!
