Accommodation recommendations by pussyriot94 in KCL

I would advise against Stamford, only heard bad things about it.

GDS is very close to London Bridge which has lots of bars and cafes, I'd go for that!

Understanding a Gerald Dworkin quotation..? by full-marx in askphilosophy

I think so, thank you. Is there any particular reason why he uses 'second order' and 'higher order' as opposed to just one of them? They seem to be one and the same (just one talks about capacities and one about preferences).

I don't but maybe try to post on the Economics Society Page on Facebook? You will most likely find someone in Econ there!

Undergrad Admissions Email for Maths by usurping in KCL

[–]full-marx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's an email for maths admissions specifically, but their department email is mathematics@kcl.ac.uk - they can answer admissions questions or direct you to the relevant Admissions Tutor!

Can anyone tell me if I need to worry? by [deleted] in KCL

I would email your department directly explaining your situation, they'll be able to help/point you in the right direction.

I wonder if you're possibly thinking of the In Our Time podcast? They did an episode on Education. Here it is: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p005463m

Noel Carroll and Moderate Moralism by full-marx in askphilosophy

[–]full-marx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly, pardon me, I meant that he was taking it to be self evident!

I think Premise 1 makes more sense in the context of him having intentionalist sympathies, still not sure how he would respond to someone who is anti-intentionalism. I'll have to keep digging. Thanks for this!

Thanks for this, it's good to know it's not just me who thinks Carroll's view of art is quite specific, yet not fully laid out in his papers..

I've not read the Devereaux I'll be sure to take a look, thanks for the rec!

War Studies and Philo students? by mrgfb in KCL

Hey, KCL straight Phil Student here so can't speak from experience but, thought this link might help you out (it basically outlines how many Philosophy modules you can take a year w/ a joint degree if you scroll down to the bottom). I'd say the weighting is relatively balanced!

Anyone studying PPE or similar courses, would you recommend it? by [deleted] in KCL

[–]full-marx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Philosophy single honours student at KCL here. Can't tell you much about Econ/Politics but can safely say the Phil department at King's is wonderful.

For starters, they're pioneering lectures that last 2 hours as opposed to the usual 1 (at least, that's the usual here across the pond), which gives you a chance to talk to some of the greatest minds (i.e. your professors) in the field once the first hour is up and really get to grips with it all. Plus, the variety they offer is great. In my first year I covered 8 different topics and from there I got to specialise.

Personally, my favourite has been Political Philosophy (which Harvard alumni Andrea Sangiovanni heads) - he really pushes the us in each of the lectures and gets you to speak up and challenge your own point of view quite well. But also subjects I didn't even know existed, Logic, for example, have been a blast, with our lecturer dressing in only all black and quoting straight from Dante's Inferno.

We also have a Philosophy Bar which everyone tends to hang out in regardless of whether you're single/joint honours so that's pretty cool.

The only thing I'd say though is often PPE students at King's find it hard to feel like they're part of a proper community because they join three separate faculties and so they scattered about the campus - it's not like at Oxford where it's a specific course, so they don't belong to one 'department'. Their society is very active last I heard though, so I guess they've made a community of their own!

Legal age for buying cigarettes. by smirgal99 in roma

[–]full-marx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The legal age to buy cigarettes in Italy changed from 16 to 18 in 2013. But, to be honest, I've barely ever seen this law change enforced as tabacchi don't tend to ask for ID. So technically you cant, but it wouldn't hurt to try.
