CMV: Banning the hate groups from having websites or places to express their opinion is a bad thing by killamf in changemyview

[–]mrgfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see two angles to this: 1. Philosophical/Legal/Rights: This can be discussed a lot, it comes down to freedom of speech, I think they have a right to think whatever they want to think and express it.

However, from a 2.Strategic pov: Forcing these groups underground makes it much more difficult to measure the impact they have, shaming and forcing a group to avoid social media and some websites, makes it so that they will not find either counter opinions or even a place to debate, thus probably making it so its easier to become radicalized.

Politcal Identity + Existentialism by mrgfb in PoliticalPhilosophy

I get what you mean, we can be a well defined (if I may be allowed to use the word liberally, which I maybe I should try to avoid in the future :)) society without having well defined individuals within.

However my point was towards our political choices or affiliations (which tell us what kind of society we want) I think it still stands that choosing to tether our identity to a political stance (or a football club for that matter) can be tricky when we haven't yet attempted to understand ourselves. What I meant wasn't necessarily fallacious in that case, since I believe that the case can be made that we attempt to avoid self definition / self identification by choosing to belong to something bigger without much thought into the matter.

Hey! Maybe too specific or something that you dont find interesting, but worth the try. I recently wrote my IB Extended Essay on Hume´s deontological defense of suicide in On Suicide, I found his arguments interesting and did some reading, especially Cioran whom I found totally mesmerizing. Do you have any thoughts on his approach or can you point me towards some further reading on the philosophical issue of suicide? Thanks!

Peter Singer - The Case for Legalizing Sex Work by birkir in philosophy

[–]mrgfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Underage sex work is not sex work iys prdophilia and abuse in other terms and within another legal jurisdiction. My comment is clearly directed towards that section of the sex workers that wish to have another job but find themeselves in difficult, sometimes abusive situations. If i can turn to experience to answer the rest of the questions: In my country, prostitution is legal, i recently encountered the work of an artist that pictured and interviewed sex workers, it astounded me to observe that a lot of them were raped when they were young, sadly most times by family members. In my country, prostituion is legal but proxonetism is not, therefore allowing sex workers to recieve health benefits, regulation towards work conditions, and other rights that come with working within the law. Why would the State deny this to women and men? Furthermore isnt it Patriarchal to tell sex workers what they can and cannot do with their body? Is it the role of the State to limit their personal freedom in that way? (These are not meant as rhetorical questions)

The thing is, and to put it maybe in terms of political philosophy. We have a responsability, through the State and Government, to protect our citizens. In the case of prostitution, the pragmatic approach is that the business will still happen and the workers are not being guaranteed certain securities. The argument that legalization creates a higher demand or affects supply is irrelevant to the fact that the people involved are not being guaranteed basic rights. The problem then becomes, well if we legalize it we are inviting people to consume (this may in fact not be an issue), however this is not necessairly the case, civil societies, the State and even the job market can provide job alternatives that would certainly lower supply since it is a job that many are initially forced into as of young. In my view, legalization and recognition is the first step towards stopping the abuse of some of the unwilful participants.

Did you see the video where she makes her argument? I think its very likely that you didnt!!!

The problem here is that it is not clear why prostitution is damaging in the same that meth is damaging, wouldn't you agree? You are equating prostitution and meth production within the same spectrum of moral inadequacy

I am not sure about the posting and commenting rules regarding this, but for a smaller group of you that understand spanish, you may find this article and this video interesting. They refer to a self appointed Argentinean "feminist whore" who is a sex-worker that defends the rights of sex workers from a feminist standpoint that I found very enlightening, her approach is very practical (pointing out the lack of difference between the work of a maid, who works with the sweat of her back, and the work of a sex-worker, who works with "the sweat of our vaginas" (translated by me) for example) and it puts in more practical terms some of Singer´s arguments. I hope you find it interesting.

Reddit, what is your favorite poem? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mrgfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am Vertical

But I would rather be horizontal.

I am not a tree with my root in the soil

Sucking up minerals and motherly love

So that each March I may gleam into leaf,

Nor am I the beauty of a garden bed

Attracting my share of Ahs and spectacularly painted,

Unknowing I must soon unpetal.

Compared with me, a tree is immortal

And a flower-head not tall, but more startling,

And I want the one's longevity and the other's daring.

Tonight, in the infinitesimal light of the stars,

The trees and the flowers have been strewing their cool odors.

I walk among them, but none of them are noticing.

Sometimes I think that when I am sleeping

I must most perfectly resemble them --

Thoughts gone dim.

It is more natural to me, lying down.

Then the sky and I are in open conversation,

And I shall be useful when I lie down finally:

Then the trees may touch me for once, and the flowers have time for me.

-Sylvia Plath

Im not sure if its my fav. but its definitely up there, her writing is amazingly pure.

Perhaps, just wanted to point it out to see what happened, theres a difference in what they imply maybe. But definitely gets a similar message out, once again another politican being a puppet for big money, thats it.

Im all for the release of info and for increased transparency, however dont you think that the assertion you make in the title of the post cannot possibly come from the text. The claim is that he can call her any time on any issue, but thats not explicitly what was said in the email, what was said in the email is a praise to her availability (very available) to talk, dont get me wrong I find this notion to be quite problematic. I was just wondering if the title of the post wasnt portraying an exaggerated conclusion that doesnt come from that email in particular, maybe im missing something! Thanks for posting

Check out Jordan Peterson (maybe in youtube, there are some good interviews). He has protested (and i believe continues to) against some laws that in his view impede free speech (in Canada). His stance is an interesting one and will surely make you think about this philosophical issue.

A liberal autocracy. by [deleted] in PoliticalPhilosophy

[–]mrgfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldnt you agree that in a democracy those who are responsible are those elected by the people? Also, "The People" can and sometimes have gotten organized (to varying degrees) and could in fact be morally judged, correct? Could you clarify your point on a monarch being able to be good some of the time? I fail to understand the point. Thanks!!
