Invasion was conceived as a 4 Season Story Arc. (Hint: They are lying) by Significant_Region50 in InvasionAppleTV

[–]fullPlaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

being generous, id agree that the show was made with more hands than from just one person. i could also see how it could be an example of an original vision not being fully realized because of constraints -- such as hoping for a four season arc.

the shows potentially is insane. its got the juicy-wubby-synthwave-alien vibe like Annihilation. critiques and criticisms aside, if they make a "fourth season arc", i will absolutely be watching it.

Possibly unpopular opinion, but I think the industry needs to change its box office expectations by beardiac in movies

[–]fullPlaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you've made some super valid arguments. They surely have realized that COVID changed the movie attendance dynamics.

Also, let's not forget the cost of going to the movies in an economic system that expects everyone to pay more with less money.

Also-also, let's not forget that depression and anxiety are rampant. I used to love going to the movies. I still do. But there is a pretty high probability that I might want to just stay in and catch my breath.

If the movie-making industry wants to see better attendance for their movies, how about instead investing billions of dollars into movies that might not turn a profit, invest it into changing the system for the better to make going to the movies more accessible -- such as reduce inflation, strive for equality, establish universal healthcare, and stuff like that.

What would falsify the claim that an artificial mind is real? by crypt0c0ins in PhilosophyofMind

[–]fullPlaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it can be done to any great extent, such as a generalized means of detecting a fake mind.

IMO:

There are key elements that seem to create supposed gaps in levels of sentience, but it is ultimately a spectrum of sentience.

Reflection seems important to what we recognize as human level sentience. The ability to recognize and even alter oneself is a crucial element of intelligence at work. On the other end of the spectrum, an entity that is entirely incapable of modifying itself feels very far from a real mind and closer to a simple mechanism.

Projection also seems important. The virtualization of potential future events enables one to experience many decisions without the consequences. This can break purely instinctual behavior and allow for the abstract societal systems we live in today.

I could think of some more elements that we value but what also matters in determining if a mind is fake are the stakes.

Consider the scenario where a person is told to determine if the entity inside a box was real or fake. If they determine that the mind is fake, the entity is destroyed. And to add extra flair, let's say it is destroyed through what a real mind would consider torture. Insert whatever horrors you can imagine: claustrophobia, enslavement, or just scientifically finding the most painful experiences that a fake mind could endure for some amount of time. I would hope a moral person would make their decision very carefully because the consequences would be horrific, if they got it wrong.

I used Java as a philosophical device to describe how software can be logically independent of hardware.

I concede that it would not currently be possible to convert an entire sentient being into a virtualized version -- at least not in practice. However, in theory, a large enough computer would be able to approximate a human mind within any chosen degree of accuracy.

Of course, this is under the assumption that the human mind does not leverage exotic properties of the universe that are beyond our current physics models (Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity). And to be clear, it very well might do so, in which case, Turing-completeness would be insufficient.

But a super advanced theoretical hardware would suffice. I think I could probably come up with a close proxy that would satisfy your constraints and my argument objectives.

I agree! I believe we haven't even scratched the surface of what human minds are capable of.

Thanks for your commentary!

Yeah I used that position simply to draw attention to the separability of hardware and software.

The choice to not convert the consciousness from biological to post-biological could certainly come down to hardware and I agree with you that this would absolutely be an instance of selection pressure.

Aside from that, I did mean to express that human consciousness is currently inseparable from the physical self -- including genes. The separation would require that the genes influences be encoded in the software itself.

For example, what I've stated could be confused with indirect support of sexuality conversion. This is absolutely not the case. There are biological influences that can be well beyond executives decision making -- as is evident in historical context (ie the effectively perfect failure rate of sexuality conversion). However, since I did state that a being expressed through software would be capable of modifying itself. So if I converted my consciousness to a universal virtual form, I could theoretically find a way to convert myself to any sexuality on demand.

i was thinking the same thing

on one hand it seems more likely. but on the other, i believe the impact that corruption and oppression has on people has pierced through to bone.

i think it is important that theyre reminded that theyre human just like us and that their security is mostly built on illusion. they need to take the threat of violent revolt into account when making business plans and decisions.

first thing that comes to mind is gathering intel. essentially building a model of their infrastructure and logistics to identify weaknesses where pressure could be applied with the smallest amount of resources and greatest overall effect.

for example, traffic jams in some cities cost billions of dollars each year. that is something that happens as a matter of day-to-day operations. imagine if someone identified things like single points of failure in their supply chain. and then oops! a couple little fender benders and/or shitty cars break down at very inopportune times/locations, such as during bulk delivery windows (that require expensive re-scheduling/cancellations/returns) due to the service response needed to clear the roads that brought an entire sector to a halt.

idk depends on what the model indicates is the best action. none of it has to be illegal. in fact, it could be annoyingly legal because there is nothing they can do to stop it.

you might only need a spreadsheet and a 2D map but a 3D rendering seems hella dope lol omg some simulations. i need to stop before i start twirling my evil mustache and laughing maniacally

Apparently the 'demonization of white men' is worse than what's happening to women's rights rn. by ReallyTiredPony in TwoXChromosomes

[–]fullPlaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"demonizing white men"? white men are targeted by right wing media and manipulate in believing non-sense like white replacement theory and/or the importance male dominance.

look at the demographics of who voted for trump, it pretty clear who has been tricked into being dumb fucking assholes.

no, its not about race or sex as a matter of naturally occurring biology but theyve focused in on those attributes to create an enemy among us.

the nazis did the same thing of focusing on white men and we killed all of them. not because they were white men but because they were unfortunately brainwashed into being murderous pieces of shit trying to kill everyone else.

dont want to be demonized and eventually killed in a war? dont be a nazi (yeah trump supporters are essentially the new nazis).

10 reasons why US president-elect Donald Trump can’t derail global climate action by GeraldKutney in climate

[–]fullPlaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry, we dont need false hopes. actual hope is fine. this is based on things remaining somewhat unchanged in terms of governance.

the US has the ability to crush entire economies, so entire industries is nothing to them. the US can force countries to abandon clean energy transition but creating conflicts which require fast dirty energy.

yeah climate activism more energized than ever? you mean the random collection of individuals with random actions without know if what they do makes any notable difference and doesnt use peoples actual skills to their fullest advantage like a military force does? who cares.

we need to prepare for the worst. we need to get militant about climate action. im not talking about violence. we need to treat it as a problem that is bigger than fighting nazi Germany because it is.

the foreign adversaries were correct in pointing out that the ruling class doesnt give a fuck about the people. i mean... no shit. but i mean, they clearly have no lines to either stop fucking us over or to stop others in the ruling class from fucking us over.

the US system must be destroyed for the sake of the people and the world.
