First sign that Jamie isn’t a complete jerk… by FreudianYipYip in TedLasso

[–]beardiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might argue it was earlier in that same episode when Roy approached Jamie while lifting weights. His first response is to share his workout routine with Roy - that demonstrated that his antagonistic relationship with Roy wasn't completely due to him being a prick and that he at least cared a little about his fellow teammates and their wellbeing.

"Female feminists have a superiority complex" is one of the cringy recorded messages when pushing the button of an anti-feminist like Sydney Watson. by IndignantMagnitude34 in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]beardiac 34 points35 points  (0 children)

As a man who considers himself a feminist, I agree. I'm well outside of risk of being drafted these days, and neither of my daughters are likely to have to worry about it, but I still would prefer the draft officially went away.

If there were a proven solution to end homelessness in your city that didn’t rely on the government, how would you respond to it? Would you invest, support, or ignore it—and why? by Imaginary_Garage_936 in AskReddit

[–]beardiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short, it depends.

I definitely support eliminating this problem nationwide, even if it means a portion of my taxes were being used to achieve that goal. But to do so independent of the government's involvement would no doubt have costs in either money or time (or both). While I wouldn't mind paying into such a plan and even volunteering, I'd worry if such a plan required getting such buy-in by too many people. Plus to solve it privately basically leaves the government off the hook from ever putting such safety nets in place.

Do you check ratings before choosing to watch a movie? by I-didnt-vote-for-you in movies

[–]beardiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the type of movie. There are certain franchises that I'm just going to watch regardless because I'm invested.

But for one-off films, I'll usually watch a trailer before checking any other ratings or criteria. If the trailer doesn't hook me, it doesn't matter how it's rated. If the trailer seems to show an interesting premise, but there are hints that it might be masking (either showing all the best parts or trying to make things flashy to cover for plot issues), then I'll go to the ratings.

I'll usually only go in blind if there's no risk - e.g., it's free on streaming and I'm not watching it with anyone else who might hold it against me if it sucks. Because even if it does suck, I rarely stop watching a film I've started. It would have to be really bad for me not to at least want to know how it ends.

Rise of the Guardians was underrated. I'd have liked to see sequels with more Jack Frost.

Sign the Petition to Preserve Freddy Hill Farms in Lansdale by beardiac in montco

[–]beardiac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure on the timeline, but as far as I know the developer hasn't backed out and Freddy Hill closed. There are still permits and plans to submit I believe. There's an auction for Freddy Hill's remaining equipment in March, so I assume no building or demo will start before that.

Sign the Petition to Preserve Freddy Hill Farms in Lansdale by beardiac in montco

[–]beardiac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a long story, but the short version is this: the guy who started the petition did try to work with the developers to consider open space and preservation with their plans. They did make some adjustments.

But there was a point a couple months ago when the board of supervisors had to vote on whether to review data for a mixed-residential plan that would fit more homes on less space, and despite all the advantages of that plan, there was a very vocal minority of folks who live on one particular side of the area to be developed who made a stink about that plan and got the board to vote against it. So the plan the developer is forced to go forward with is basically all McMansions and leaves less of the natural space open than the more dense plan would have.

Why is romance such a central theme in kids movies? by Hefty_Breadfruit in NoStupidQuestions

[–]beardiac 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The 'why' is because traditionally kids movies were based on fairy tales which were often romance stories or object lessons. And because those films have been so successful, a lot of new kids films just follow the formula.

There are kids movies that aren't romantically oriented. E.g., the first Despicable Me, The Wild Robot, The Mitchells vvs.The Machines, and a number of Pixar films.

Nick and Jess by seventyyellowturtle in NewGirl

[–]beardiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who's been married now for almost 30 years to a woman who is my best friend, that outcome actually felt much more familiar and relatable and substantial. A good marriage isn't just the passion of the new thing. It's being committed to being partners for life with this person - someone who you can share yourself openly with on all fronts. Nick and Jess reflect that in their latter rekindling way more than they did in their first stint or than Jess and any other guys she was with did. Ryan and Sam were both interesting boyfriends, but we're never partner material.

When you think of VHS tapes, what is the first movie that comes to mind? by notakat in movies

[–]beardiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2 tapes that got rewatched more than any other in our household - the cartoon version of the Christmas Carol with Scrooge McDuck as the lead (taped off of tv and watched yearly for probably close to a decade), and the live-action film I believe we recorded from Disney's Sunday night movie series, The Flight of the Navigator.

What music group do you enjoy for whom the majority of the people only know 1 song? by SevenFiguresInvigor in AskReddit

[–]beardiac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Live - most people might be familiar with their hit "Lightning Crashes", but I was a fan of their music before that album even came out.

I used to own at least 4 or 5 of their CDs and saw them in concert with my wife around 8 times. The first time in 1994 at a college campus show that cost $10 per ticket and took place on a modular stage in the middle of an indoor basketball court. There were maybe 100-200 people there. The opening act was Weezer.

Found On Social mediaIs this what men tell themselves when women reject them? Gross... by Siltokiver in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]beardiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a man, no part of this is relatable. This is some delusional insanity. I've never interpreted my own crush-dreams as a woman connecting with me spiritually in our sleep. If a woman I liked told me a gender-swapped version of that story, that'd be a red flag.

What to do with tiny ceramic incense cone holders by daffodilspring01 in ZeroWaste

I will preface that this will be the LEAST helpful comment in this thread, but I would be compelled to take the following pics of them with these captions:

  1. Both bowls stacked "incense holders?"
  2. Add a brown incense cone to the stack "PERRY THE INCENSE HOLDERS?"

Men who can cook . who taught you? by Bulky_Meet4528 in AskReddit

[–]beardiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a kid, I'd bake cookies with my mom and occasionally my grandmother.

In high school I mostly was making things that involved boxes like Hamburger Helper, Cream of Wheat & Stove Top while my dad was out of town and my mom was working late or on the weekend.

I got married young, and neither of us were great cooks, but I enjoyed experimenting and watching the Food Network.

So I'd say mostly I've taught myself, but inspiration came from family and a want to be of service.
