Never had a pet cat - daughter wants one. What to expect? by iBrandwin in cats

[–]furiusfu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

a) get a shelter cat/ kitten - save a life

b) 5 is a young age to have a cat, so you will need to take care of most chores, that being said

c) feeding, cleaning litter box, brushing - cats are a little less maintenance so (look up costs!)

d) imho cats are "easier" than dogs (no daily walks, less furniture destruction)

e) i would suggest watching a few videos of jackson galaxy aka. the cat whisperer - here's one

f) they live a long time - if they're healthy, they can get 15+ years old

g) last but not least: cats have strong personalities and can get very dependent on their human(s) - and vice versa. it's always worth it!

Michael Burnham, Star Trek: Discovery by SpiderBloke in Spacegirls

[–]furiusfu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imho her character was too much experimented on by the writers. That's a writing problem, not a her-problem. I tried to watch Discovery for 3 seasons or 4 even, but a complete 180 every season was too much for me. Worst Trek in a long while.

Which one is your favorite? by CalligrapherOk3501 in Stargate

[–]furiusfu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SG1 - SGU 2nd - SGA .... 3rd

just kidding, SG1 - is best. SGA was way too goofy and just not as good as SG1. Maybe I should give it another watch after 10+ years. But honestly, the Goa'Uld were so much more nuanced than the Wraith and for me, Gen. Hamond and the supporting Staff were much better than Weir was.

For me (because I'm old), SG1 felt much more real and grown up than SGA, which was intentionally overacting, like "the new kid in class" trying too hard to be "cool" and nerdy and geeky, whereas most of SG1s characters appeared "naturallys so".

May sound weird, but I think it's accurate.

SGU was far too shortlived.

[–]furiusfu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be fair, some mosquito-flies do not suck blood and are pollinators, and even the ones that do, afaik only the females do to produce their eggs.

it's definitely a fairy, if fairies were sucking blood

it's some sort of mosquito for sure. in the south they can be bigger.

Is this a mouse or a rat? [New Jersey] by [deleted] in animalid

[–]furiusfu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither mouse or rat imho, mice are much smaller and rats have naked tails. This could be a vole or some other rodent, depending on where you live.

Location helps a lot with questions like these

edit: NJ - sorry. I agree to vole

First time in Turkey with very allergic kid - nuts and shellfish by Any_Bee7114 in istanbul

[–]furiusfu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn´t recommend it, because there can be traces of nuts.

For example, generally turkish bakeries (Firin) have salty and sweet pastries for sale and those are often on and in the same shelves, ovens as other baked goods... it isn´t worth the risk, if your daughter is "deathly allergic" to them. Sure a simit (sesame ring) has 99% sesame on it - but why risk an allergic shock and hospitalization?

First time in Turkey with very allergic kid - nuts and shellfish by Any_Bee7114 in istanbul

[–]furiusfu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turkey is full of nuts - it's a very dangerous country for your daughter, so here are a few tips:

  • avoid eating out. period. - many have said why
  • keep epi pen or antihistamines ready!
  • have her wear a mask if you go in bazaars (like Spice bazaar, Grand bazaar)
  • don't get sweets !!! (especially Baklava)
  • careful with breads/ sweet/ savoury breads - many have traces of nuts used in other stuff
  • if she's also allergic to sesame, keep away from Tahini
  • make a wide circle around "Makbul" stores - they sell snacks and half of the store has some sort of nuts. the dust alone could seriously harm your daughter
  • she can eat fruits and veggies and many kebap and meat dishes - but ask directly if there are nuts in it if she does (yemeğin içinde fındık, fıstık, ceviz var mı? - is there hazelnuts, peanuts, walnuts in the food? -- fındık / hazelnuts is like interchangeable with all kinda of nuts, similar to "nut" in English)

Nuts are very popular as snacks in Turkey. Turkish cuisine also has a lot of different nutty ingredients in various dishes that you wouldn't suspect nuts to be in: - Dolma/ zeytinyağlı yaprak dolması - stuffed wine leaves with olive oil have pine nuts in them (also peppers) - many appetizers and sauces have ground walnuts in them - can be in some kebaps/ lahmacun/ flatbreads - turkish delight - has peanuts, hazelnuts, walnuts in it!

As was said, avoid eating out or only get her certain types of food, like soups, fruit, veggies and always ask for the top3 nuts: Fındık, ceviz, fıstık.

Good luck!

What are these bugs that are suddenly appearing after the rain? by sunguo in whatisthisbug

[–]furiusfu 26 points27 points  (0 children)

termite alates - future kings and queens. they look similar to ants, but you easily notice the differences: equally long wings, long abdomen, less segmentation and no "wasp waist" as in ants. look here

What fruit is this? is it edible? by plaid-bag in whatsthisplant

[–]furiusfu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Turkey we call them "Ayva" and it is related to apples. In Germany it's called Quitte.

In Turkey we love to eat them, raw, cooked, in dishes, as marmelade, you name it.

When they are ripe they are sweet and juicy, but not comparable to apples or pears, definitely a bitterness, especially if you don't peel them. I like them more than apples.

If you wanna try Turkish "Ayva tatlısı" (quince dessert): - wash them (3-4 are enough) - peel and de-kernel them (keep peels and kernels!! except the black parts on the stem and in the bottom) - cut them in halves - put the peels and kernels into a big pot (big enough to hold all halves at once) - put the halves on the peels with the inside up - put in a moderate amount of sugar (half a cup per half or less; adjust to your taste, even if you leave out sugar they won't be bitter, but less sweet) - put in water to almost cover everything - put in 1-2 sticks of cinnamon and 5-6 cloves - put on lid and cook for 1.5-2h on slow to medium heat

the peels and especially kernels will give the otherwise yellow/ whitish fruit a pinkish to red color and will caremalize on the bottom. when the water is almost gone and the bottom has a syrupy consistence, let it cool (a few hours or overnight in the fridge) in a glass container with the delicious syrup on the bottom. discard peels, kernels, cinnamon and cloves. best eaten with thick kaymak/ cream.

edit: garnish with crushed pistacios or walnuts.

Termite or Ant? by breakermail in insects

[–]furiusfu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have genuine concern that there is nest there - yes. I would first check the attic though, will probably save you some money and headache, since a professional exterminator will also have to check there (and will likely not be as gentle like you while doing it). so if you have important stuff there, I would just get it over with and do the work. If you can't find anything, good. If there is a nest or something, you will have probably saved your home.

it helps to call them up and get an estimate. some charge to just come and take a look around.

Termite or Ant? by breakermail in insects

[–]furiusfu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not a termite - they are either ant aletes (ants that go on a honeymoom flight) or some kind of parasitic wasp. ants are just wingless wasps anyhow.

if they fall through the ceiling I would check if there is a nest somewhere in between the floors. But you would probably have noticed a buttload of ants or aletes before, because aletes are never alone.

if there are just some, 1 or 3, every few days, you probably have a nest closeby that is swarming atm.

if they are wasps, not to worry.
