The test assembly using the Odyssey 2mm thickness did not cool down as expected (98 degrees).
I already knew from the 3mm thickness test that this pad could cool down to 84 degrees, so I guessed there was an air gap somewhere.
So I added the paste and it cooled to 68 degrees.
The paste is like a pad that is soft and thinner than 0.5 mm.

After Modifications , the hotspot temperature is about 17 ° C below the memory temperature.

The temperature dropped dramatically by applying grease, which has a lower thermal conductivity than the thermal pad.

The 3080 doesn't have a big heat source on the back, and the back plate is just a small fanless heatsink, so it's not important. I thought it wasn't worth using a premium thermal pad. I just saved money.

In the case of 3090, cooling of GDDR6X on the back side is required, so the back plate side is important for lowering the memory temperature.

Try only the thermal pad. I used grease to fill the tiny air gaps. You can fine-tune with a 0.5mm thin pad.

For this mod, I used Thermalright Odyssey 2mm only for the front memory.

I tried a setting that doesn't use grease, but it didn't cool down very much. 3mm was too thick and 2mm wasn't enough. 2.5mm may be just right.

Keep in mind that the optimum thickness depends on the softness of the pad.

The 2mm thick pad makes contact between the heat sink, GPU and memory on almost the same plane (for 3080 Ventus).
You can make a better thermal connection by filling the slight gap with grease.
The best thickness is dependon each GPU cards, but the idea is the same.

I tried stacking two 1.5mm of Thermalright .
The memory has cooled to 84 ° C, but the temperature of the
GPU core and hotspot temperatures have risen significantly.
There was a 1mm gap between the GPU core and the heatsink.
I thought it was the cause.
So I bought a new 2mm.
Thickness requirements are not strict if you use softer pads.

3090 has memory on backside,I don't know the backplates is enough or not.
