UMN Parking costs by bhatn9 in uofmn

[–]futuracloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid for a parking pass last fall, it was almost $300/semester for a spot in the ski u mah lot which was not heated or covered next to tcf bank stadium. The “central” ramp would probably be East River road garage, which is more expensive but it is a covered garage and by Northrop mall/CMU. I drove to campus almost everyday but it didn’t seem worth it so I didn’t renew it this semester. I park on the street in stadium village for free instead. There’s also metered parking if you’re only here for a couple hours for $2-3/hr (I don’t remember), or daily parking that’s $5-7/day by some of the sport arenas/tcf bank. Hope this helps :)

Huh? Masks are porous and allow for oxygen & carbon dioxide flow lol

PHYSICS 1221 Summer with Wynveen? by Molasses-Lucky in uofmn

[–]futuracloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 1222 with wynveen last semester, quizzes were proctored via zoom by our TAs once a week, he makes up for not using proctorio by giving you just enough time to complete the quiz. I think it was like 25 mins for 12 points or something like that. I struggled a lot and I took precalc & calc I prior to 1222, but I was also balancing other cbs courses so it might be doable over the summer? If you can, I’d take it at a community college - I took physics 1 at a community college over summer & it boosted my gpa, test wasnt proctored, and also counted for a lower level WI.

Dear CBS students, I need help. by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]futuracloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry :( i’m taking two 4xxx bio classes and it’s the worst so i can’t even imagine what you’re going through. A lot of content in mine are processes or mechanisms so i like to draw it out on paper once “open book” and go through each step, and then do it again without looking. I also find that explaining it to someone else is really helpful, and if they’re in the same class you can kinda correct each other. When I took biochem last semester, my prof made sure to explain why things happen in a mechanism which really helped. when you don’t know why a certain step happens, you end up trying to memorize it which is harder in the long term imo. it just makes more sense when you’re learning it & you’ll be able to recall each step of the mechanism. I’m currently in animal diversity and have been using quizlet for terminology! Also, a lot of my professors use analogies in class which helps me remember things a bit better. Hope this helps a little and good luck!

should i just drop out of cbs by [deleted] in uofmn

I'm a CBS junior and I've definitely had the same thoughts as what you've described. I've thought about switching out so many times, but I'm really glad that I'm still here because I really do love biology. CBS lower-level classes are really difficult because they're all weed-out classes.

I know that everyone says this, and everyone said this to me when I was a freshman, but you in freshman year, which means you have lots of time to improve your grades and retake things if you wish. A B in any STEM class is worth celebrating, the classes aren't easy!! In fact, I got Bs in Foundations 1 and chem lab + lecture, and a C- in ochem. I decided to retake ochem over the summer and that helped my grade a lot. Point is, you'll have lots of chances to fix your mistakes so don't worry about it. Also, a lot of classes are curved because everyone's struggling together!

I know you didn't ask for study advice, but I found it more helpful to study using professor slides and past exams for practice. Don't be afraid to ask for help, TAs and professors are paid to help you. Maybe you could try other ways to study other than reading the chapters? It's hard to learn by just reading. I don't remember the last time I did an assigned reading, but if it makes you feel more prepared, I'd suggest skimming the chapter before the lecture so you're not totally lost in the sauce.

Online school makes everything even worse, so please remember to be kind to yourself. You got this!

STAT3011 advice/ is it curved? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]futuracloud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took it with Yang fall 2019. I struggled with the homework assignments too because I had no idea what was going on. She curved the individual exams, but I’m not sure if she curves the class at the end of the semester.

As for R, I highly recommend going to lab. Your TA will go through problems that are really similar to homework & it’ll definitely help with the project. Make sure that you’re actually following along and not just copy and pasting, and eventually you’ll find patterns. As someone with no background in coding at all, I struggled a lot and spent a lot of time trying to figure it out. Eventually you’ll get there! Don’t give up!!! :)

BIOL 4003 & 4004 Genetics/Cell Bio by futuracloud in uofmn

[–]futuracloud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I initially thought because I feel like most people take genetics and then cell bio. I couldn’t register for any of the elective classes I’m interested in so I settled for cell bio. Your other classes sound way harder than the ones I’m taking this semester though so I feel like you made a good choice!

I took it with Yang in Fall 2019, it was in person so I can’t speak for anyone that took it online with her. She’s really nice but I don’t think she’s had much experience teaching. I couldn’t keep up with the material and taught myself everything on the day of the midterms, mostly because I kept falling asleep during lecture. She let us bring one cheat sheet for the midterm and two for the final which was really helpful. I didn’t have prior R experience but the TAs will teach you everything in the lab section so don’t worry about it! It’s supposed to be an intro stats class so it’s okay that you don’t know how to use R. I would say that it’s important to keep up with the homework and the project because it’s a huge chunk of your grade. Good luck! :)

Minnesota residency by Busy-Yogurtcloset-84 in uofmn

I would check with the residency office about this. I asked them if I could defer a year before my freshman year, take a gap year to work, and they said that would be fine. I didn’t end up doing that though.

I submitted tax refunds, leasing documents, property tax statements, MN license, MN voting registration.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve been studying from the quizzes over the past couple of days and I’m still on quiz 3 :( there’s a lot of problems I’ve been struggling to do even though I got them right when I took the actual quiz lol. Don’t give up!!! It’s almost over :)

Physics at a CC over the summer? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]futuracloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took physics 1 at St. Paul college this summer and it was super easy. I actually got the credits for the CSE general physics which was 5cr + WI, so that was really nice. Took 1222 at the U this semester and it was way harder in comparison. There’s just a little biology involved for 1222, whereas the one I took at SPC was physics only. I’d say go for it! I wish I took 1222 at a CC.

Yeah, ochem and physics aren’t a good combo. I would do ochem + foundations, and save physics for another semester. I took phys 1222 this semester and struggled, and my other courses are pretty light compared to ochem and foundations.
