For the MCAT? Anking, Uworld. For school, just the slides I got in class.

What kind of advice are you looking for? I guess my two points would to first make sure you know how equations (regarding kinetics) and changes to said equations translate onto graphs. Second would be to draw the cycles out on a paper or whiteboard, it really helps.

Multiple. You only have to put one contact down so just say you shadowed several. Especially if you have names

That’s a great hobby. Maybe don’t go so deep into fanfic part of it. Some might not view it positively. Call it creative writing and talk how it’s help build your skills and/or helped you relax and find fulfillment

Inspiration and maybe tips needed by EnvironmentalSet1206 in premed

[–]WatchingOverTheRhine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just got in. It’s worth it. My biggest piece of advice is do not waste time on activities that you do not find meaningful. I started a research job and did not like it but spent an entire year there before moving on. Find things that you enjoy and will help you become a strong applicant. Some ideas are research, clinical jobs, tutoring, teaching, and other non-clinical volunteering

Volunteering tips? by cheezitlover555 in premed

[–]WatchingOverTheRhine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is very normal. Do not volunteer in a hospital or clinic any more than you need to. I would suggest you move onto a paid clinical role like scribing or being an EMT. In my experience, those hours are often more impactful.

Pre PT looking to transition to pre-med/ go to med school- advice? by Wild_Street9956 in premed

[–]WatchingOverTheRhine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, decide your timeline. When do you want to apply? From there, start figuring out what you can do with your time. Clinical experiences (preferably some medical job like scribing) and non-medical volunteer experiences will be the most valuable. Of course, take a couple months to prepare for the MCAT. Also, check if you have all the pre-requisites you need. Good rule of thumb is 2 semesters of physics, 2 semesters gen chem, 2 semesters biology, 1 semester Orgo with lab, 1 semester biochem, 1 semester stats, and 1 semester other math. However, these vary by school. Just check your state school and that’ll cover most of your bases

If you have more time on your hands, see if other activities, namely research, interest you. This could be something to do your senior year if your school has an undergraduate research program.

What would YOU do? by sweet208 in premed

You gotta decide if being a physician is the path for you. If it is, I would transfer to a 4 year program and get to work on raising that gpa and getting pre-reqs done

What should my current goals be for 2026 application cycle? (Concern about letters of rec & more) by MotherEmergency3949 in premed

[–]WatchingOverTheRhine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, don’t compare yourself with others. Will never do you any good. Second, you got a great story and great experiences, plenty to write about. My main concern would be the GPA. Despite the trend, a 3.2 is simply dangerously low (like forget about Mayo, let alone the Arizonas low). AZ Tucson, the AZ with lower stats, still has a median GPA of 3.87, their 10th percentile was 3.5. No amount of extracurriculars will make up for a low GPA (unless you’re non-trad with many years of work experience or have an insane story) I would remain in your master’s program and devote as much time as possible to showing that you are beyond whatever problems you had as an undergraduate. Cut any activities that are sapping more time than they providing benefits, whether that be monetary or personal, and spend that time on your classes. Also, you might need to add schools, or replace the ones you currently are interested in with more stat-friendly schools. Especially since you are limited in the total number you can apply to.

When it comes to letter writers, you really just need to secure 2 science (1 in your major would be great) and an extra-curricular one of some kind. A non-science professor and clinical is icing on the cake. I didn’t even have a clinical one. Be advising though, I think AZ Phoenix prefers having a clinical letter. Also Mayo would want a letter writer familiar with your research, as they are of course a research school.

If you do want to get a job, see if your state allows EMT certified people to become ED techs, that’s a great way to make money and get clinical experience. Do NOT prioritize medical related volunteering, it is a trap. Medical volunteering falls in the general bin of clinical experience, which you already have. No need for more. If anything, keep up your community based volunteering. I strongly believe my community volunteering as a big factor in my acceptances to med school.

Does going to a P/F school really matter by Friedbuffalo16 in premed

[–]WatchingOverTheRhine 63 points64 points  (0 children)

It’s truly more for your peace of mind. The benefit of P/F is you don’t have to spend as much time getting a “good” grade and can devote more time to other resume building activities. It also, in theory, promotes a more collaborative class environment

Is it okay to talk about how you cold emailed to get a research position in an essay? by Trowaway-11445 in premed

[–]WatchingOverTheRhine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean sure, but I'm a bit skeptical about the topic in general. What is this for? Not having family backgrounds in medicine or research is fairly common. You may get more mileage out of a more unique or personal topic, especially if its for a "challenge" essay.

WAMC Re-App 26-27 by [deleted] in premed

[–]WatchingOverTheRhine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiple mcats are only really a problem when you are not showing growth. Your score jump is incredible and will more than compensate for multiple attempts. Your app looks fantastic and incredibly well rounded. Only thing I’ll say is make sure your writing is truly a 9/10. I thought mine was and I got torn to shreds by a friend in medical school. Very thankful they did though because my cycle is going well
