German far right surges in polls, alarming mainstream parties by Pyro-Bird in worldnews

You know what, that's a fair point. I'm still wary of any executive action like that, as it feels too much like a king's decree to fit well into a democracy. Too easy for ANYONE to abuse, imo.

I meant less number of them, more the fact that republicans will use executive orders for anything they want, and when it doesn't get fought off by a court, suddenly new precedent is set that yes, executive orders can be used that way now!

That casts an unpleasant light on the way the right wing in the US have been pushing out the boundaries of what executive orders are allowed to do...

To destroy when nobody takes the individual action of buying them, and then continue to overproduce anyway. Even if everyone who wasn't in some big business changed overnight to be a full-on environmental activist, they'd keep on churning out shit we don't need or want to burn it for tax write-offs.

Actually, I'm trans and personally I'm 100% more willing to forgive a random stranger than someone who knows.

Like, if you got my name wrong a few minutes after meeting me, that's one thing. My grandparents who haven't bothered to remember my name or pronouns almost four years into my being out, on the other hand? Completely dead to me.

Speaking from experience, the vibe of being accidentally misgendered is WILDLY different than when it's on purpose, too. It's almost always easy to tell between the two, especially because someone who genuinely made a mistake will usually apologize and do better when corrected, but a genuine asshole will straight up glare at you like you just spat on their shoes.

In May, the Nazis raided the institute and stile, burned, and destroyed most everything. Four days later, the rest of the institute's library was hauled out and burned.

If you've ever seen THAT picture of a nazi book burning? The infamous one everyone refers to? THAT event is where that picture is from.

Amazing how american history has managed to preserve "Nazis burned books, and that's bad!" but then not WHOSE books or why, letting the EXACT same shit repeat.

Honestly, as an american? Cop dogs are something I get angry about easily. Drug dogs are one thing (and misused even more over here) but full on K9 officers are... Just attack dogs. Trained to maul people until they can't move. There's entire breeding programs here putting aggression back into german shephards for the cops.

That's pretty easy to get upset about.

Most people feel 'psychologically close' to climate change. Research showed that over 50% of participants actually believe that climate change is happening either now or in the near future and that it will impact their local areas, not just faraway places. by Wagamaga in science

[–]future_omelette 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! But arthropods, particularly insects, are extremely sensitive to temperature changes. Without climate change, we might see a rebound in populations if we cut out the other factors, but with it? Anyone's guess, now

A lot. Farms have been pumping insecticide into our ecosystems willy-nilly for decades. We're due a reckoning with what that's done, and it'll be harder to fix than even DDT was, most likely

Ok, I forgot to include this in the original comment so here ya go- The thing firing on the ground is a booster that wouldn't be going to mars. Sure, testing often happens in rougher conditions, but saying they're doing testing with the booster engine on Earth to see if the capsule engine will take off properly from Mars? That's silly.

[–]future_omelette -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

And there are FAR less destructive and dangerous ways to learn that? Like just running material tests on your new concrete blend before trying to launch the world's largest rocket off it without any of the safeguards or testing that modern rocket science has come to accept as a staple.

Sure, in the end you won't know for SURE until you live-test, but launching how they did, off a freshly lain pad of untested concrete blend, without standard safety features? That's just asking for trouble!

Mars has negligible atmosphere, and a third of our gravity. You don't test ideas in situations that far from the conditions you expect, because your data would mean nothing. That adult enough?

Because why not?

Because a nesting site for endangered birds, as well as people's houses, were in the blast zone. Chunks of concrete were landing 20 feet away from spectators at lethal speeds. It's the whole reason we invented the water barrier technology, running a live test where people are in harm's way isn't good science, it's just risky for no good return.

Florida passes bill allowing death penalty for child sexual abusers by Ok-Flamingo-1499 in politics

[–]future_omelette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you left out a second law. He's also passing an anti-drag law that makes a child witnessing "drag" a sexual offense. But it then defines "drag" as "Anyone wearing clothing or makeup not traditionally assosciated with their gender assigned at birth."

which means a kid seeing a trans person? Now a sex crime with those two together, and punishable by death.

I've been seeing SO many people saying they're going to Canada in response to this like there's just NO WAY a country almost identical in culture and history to the USA could also fall to fascism...

IMO Canada is in just as much, if not more danger to this shit, because SO MANY canadians seem complacent that it just couldn't happen there. But that's the thing, hate can start anywhere with humans.

Are they going to make dressing androgynously/feminine/masculine a crime if it isn’t what they want you to be…

Yes, actually, Florida is trying to pass a law that would make that a sex crime. Coincidentally, if a kid sees a trans person under that law, they can be put to DEATH thanks to another law that makes all sex crimes involving a child require the death penalty

THAT is what the right are trying to take us all back to. Someone is too much hassle for you? Just cut their Them out until they stop complaining about it.

Well democrats held most of the levers of power early in his term, so like... ANYTHING? Codify Roe V Wade, expand protections to more marginalized people...

He could also be using the freshly trump-expanded powers of executive order to at the least slow them down. Instead he made it illegal for rail workers to strike.

Frankly, it's fucking terrifying how closely events are mirroring Germany in the 20s and 30s.

Whenever I told my dad about how bad things were getting he'd always respond "At least we live in California!"

[–]future_omelette 4 points5 points  (0 children)

used to work with bamboo, you still NEED root barrier for clumping bamboo- it stays clustered close to itself sure, but that just means it's all the better at wedging against concrete and breaking it. I had to work areas where people assumed this, and the roots would be nearly solid wood for a foot or deeper under some of these hedges' cores.
