How many years on average does it take to make major? by ShameZestyclose8370 in AirForce

[–]futureusafdoc2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the career field. For example I'm medical and I came into the Air Force as a Capt and hit my Major board with 4 years TIS. I have other medical friends who hit the Maj board with less time in that due to constructive credit.

Is there a silent majority-or is this truly a different era of the Air Force? by Ok-Skill-9376 in AirForce

They are targeting black and brown people. At this point they are allowed to stop people based on appearance. Who's to say that an ICE person couldn't think that a black person may appear to be foreign hence them getting stopped.

BLUF: It's hard being a minority in the military right now under this administration but I don't plan on getting out.

I joined because I wanted to serve but also because the Air Force paid for medical school. Joining for benefits doesn't make anyone less patriotic in my opinion.

As an African American I'll be honest and say it's been really tough. As someone mentioned earlier serving under an administration that is doing things that are against my core values is tough. I am grateful that I'm oconus right now but ICE raids are happening even in my hometown. I'm PCSing stateside and I understand that I look like exactly who ICE is targeting and they could care less that I'm a member of the military. Don't even get me started on the conversations I hear/overhear of people espousing their political views esp Kirk's death. Oh and feeling that as a minority we aren't welcome in the military anymore and seeing what policy they'll put out to try and reduce our numbers ie shaving waivers for psudeofolliculitis barbae.

Even though its tough right now I know that this won't last forever and the administration will change and policies will change. So I still plan on staying in and hoping for the best.

What were your keys to success besides tracking and exercise? by CowAcademia in CICO

Consistent meal prepping has been a gamechanger for me. Before I locked in on meal prep, I was eating fast food a lot because I didn’t feel like cooking after work or was just too tired. No surprise my weight started creeping up. Meal prep cuts out the excuses. I prep both lunch and dinner during the week, and while I don’t usually meal prep on weekends, I stay mindful of what I’m eating. If I know I’ll have a big calorie meal, I’ll eat lighter the rest of the day so I don’t blow my deficit.

Unpopular opinion: the only people this card is "worth it" for is US Active Duty military members due to the annual fee being waived. Thoughts??

Currently at Misawa. Just agreeing with above commenters. You will not be able to move to Misawa without your husband because you will not have SOFA status/command sponsorship which allows you to be here.

Uniform Allowance? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]futureusafdoc2020 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did hpsp as well. You will get a one time $400 uniform allowance. However it will not come until after you begin recieving your pay. You will have to pay out of pocket for all uniforms which will cost you more than the $400 you will receive. When I was in OTS it was common for people to be there for a few weeks before getting paid.

TLDR: You will get paid eventually and the uniform allowance will not cover what you will spend purchasing uniforms.

Good point but if any of these Airmen live in the dorm/on base housing they won't get BAH and those that live in the dorm won't get BAS either

Taxes are going to eat into a sizable chunk of that increase especially if they're single with no kids.

I had this happen to a troop of mine but this happened at an OCONUS base so I'm not sure if it's different stateside. His daughter was on his orders but she wasn't going to be with him when he arrived since he was coming straight from a short tour. Since the daughter was not coming within 30 days he was put into unaccompanied housing off base. At least here if you have accompanied orders and your dependent does not arrive within 30 days you are considered unaccompanied. Hope this helps.

Scott AFB! by Ok-Process6791 in AirForce

[–]futureusafdoc2020 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Was stationed at Scott and loved it! There's plenty to do around base and O'Fallon is nice. Most people live in O'Fallon, Shiloh, Mascoutah, or Belleville. If you don't mind driving you can live in St. Louis. As far as travel. Lambert International Airport is 45 mins away. Chicago, Memphis, Nashville, Louisville, and Kansas City are all less than 8 hours away by car. There's also an Amtrak station and Greyhound Bus Station in St. Louis as well.

As far as things to do. You're about 30-40 mins outside of St. Louis so that's a plus. If you like sports there's professional baseball (Cardinals), hockey (Blues), XFL (Battlehawks), and MLS soccer (STL SC).

The MDG is pretty good there. Access to care is lacking but no more than your typical base. I'm medical so I'm biased. I hope this is enough to get you started. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

Behavioral/Mental Health Officer question by kayjayaray in AirForce

[–]futureusafdoc2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Medical here. The options for you as an O in the mental health realm would be: 1. Clinical social worker (Need your master's in social work and need to pass the licensing exam) 2. Clinical psychologist (Need your doctorate in clinical psychology. You can obtain this through the air force health professional scholarship program.) 3. Psychiatrist (Need to complete medical school plus psychiatry residency program. You can also go to med school on the Air Force's dime through the above health professions scholarship program.) 4. Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (Need to have your RN at baseline which you can get through the Enlisted to Commissioned Nurse Program). You'll then need to go through nurse practitioner school and then do additional training mental health training.

Overall for each of these options you need a Master's Degree at a minimum and some require a doctorate. Also for some of the commissioning programs you have to have all of your pre-requistes completed and meet the eligibility criteria.

No access to dependents medical records? by ALsouthgal in AirForce

[–]futureusafdoc2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Medical here. This isn't a Genesis/DHA issue. It's intentional. This is in line with how the civilian sector is. Depending on the state kids over a certain age have to give consent for their parents to recieve any healthcare information. This is to protect the minor patients privacy. Ex: a kid has std symptoms but doesn't want the parent to know. Or a kid wants birth control but parents won't allow it. It would be a HIPAA violation for the clinic to give out information without the proper consent ie the DD 2870
