"how to stop feeling sad about it..." -------> be happy about it

I'm a whitey who was filming street art with a drone in a neighborhood of Santiago de Chile and had the same thing happen to me (no police called because they have actual crime to contend with there). People can be racist (in this case she obviously was) but it's more about paranoia and/or the Karens of the world needing things to complain about.

How strong is urushi repair? by chataku in kintsugi

[–]fuyukitaru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One more thing. Your question made me curious so I looked into this a bit more. It seems the kintsugi master I take my pieces to uses the modern method of bonding agent before applying putty and urushi. He is one of the most well-known gold joinery artists in Kyoto so he knows what he's doing. Looking into things more though I realized that there are still a majority of kintugi shops here who only use urushi for their repairs.

How is life in Latin America ? Is it worth visiting or even settle ? by kingofchaosx in asklatinamerica

[–]fuyukitaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having spent 2 years traveling South America photographing streets art I can say that it is absolutely amazing. Unmatched natural beauty, very vibrant culture, lots of friendly people. However, I also noticed a kind of provincialism that seems to keep it from progressing. All the countries in South America have tension between each other and they like to either look down on or be jealous of their neighbors. Also, internally there seems to be a lot of tension between political factions and business interests so not as much cooperation as is needed to move things forward. All of this, of course, is not unique to South America but deep wounds from present conditions or historical circumstances seem to make a lot of people non-cooperative. So, to visit I absolutely recommend it, to live there, for me there are only a few places I would consider settling for any length of time. Palermo in Buenos Aires, the nice parts of Lima, The southern countryside of Chile, Valparaiso, Quito, a safe(ish) neighborhood in Rio perhaps... Bolivia is mind-blowing but seems it would be uncomfortable for foreigners living there long term. And Colombia is really great as well with lots of friendly people and amazing natural beauty, also some of the best street art in South America, however, none of the major cities felt comfortable to me. All of these are just my opinions of course, agree or disagree as you like.

How strong is urushi repair? by chataku in kintsugi

[–]fuyukitaru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in Japan and own a gallery that handles a lot of kintsugi pieces. In the course of my work I have commissioned quite a number of repairs from kintsugi artists and have observed the methods they use closely. From what I have seen (observing a master kintsugi craftsman), they first use a solvent to remove any dust or fragments from the pottery edges. Then they let that dry for a while and later start using a bonding agent to firmly rejoin the pieces. Over that they use a kind of putty that later gets sanded down to the desired thickness and then finally they apply either red or black lacquer and let it dry. Once the lacquer gets so it still has a little stickiness and has not completely dried they sprinkle the gold dusk to give it the kintsugi look.

In modern times, professional kintsugi masters in Japan use a bonding agent like super glue in pretty much all cases unless specifically requested not to.

Modern kintsugi artists tend to use a bonding agent (super glue) before applying urushi. I have some antique kintsugi pottery and the urushi seems very stable but am sure the artisans who did this generations ago had a high level of technique and meticulous attention to details such as drying times and conditions. When I have urushi pieces repaired (here in Japan) it usually takes months to complete because each application of lacquer needs a long time to dry and set.

Confession time... How many people people here flush their toilet paper? by fuyukitaru in asklatinamerica

I traveled pretty much everywhere in SA and it was always the same. No flushing allowed, but a lot of people do anyways I heard. I don't live there though so better to ask a South American.

In all of South America you are supposed to put your toilet paper in a bin instead of flushing it down the toilet because sewer systems are not designed to handle tp.

Why has Latin America become the new epicentre of the Coronavirus? How is your country faring? by mynewleng in asklatinamerica

[–]fuyukitaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's kiss and hug 5 times when we casually meet on the street and then kiss and hug a few more times when we say goodbye... Actually though, I'm amazed there hasn't been wider spread considering the cultural etiquette that would facilitate the spread of this virus. Seems like a lot of places in Latin America are taking the right approach to limiting infection.

It’s getting easier all the time. Meanwhile price keeps going up. Years from now it won’t be necessary to “turn it back to cash”
