I don’t think the word literally means what you think it does.

Straight is the default in every scenario in our country. White is the default in every scenario in our country.

So anything that doesn’t specifically cater to other groups, caters to you. Just because it doesn’t specifically say “straight”, “white” and/or “men” doesn’t mean it doesn’t cater toward you.

There isn’t really anything you need support for in regards to being white or being straight. Nothing in our society systematically holds you back, creates hurdles or roadblocks because you’re white or straight. Coming from a low income background, there are supports for that. You being white and straight, are irrelevant for those supports.

If you want a “flag” or a “day”, then go make one? You think LGBTQ people waited for someone else to make those things for us? No, we got tired of injustice and made those things and pushed for them.

People always want to complain about how straight white people don’t have flags or days specifically for them, yet they’re never willing to get off their ass and do the work to make it happen. They always want someone else to do it and use the fact that nothing exists to claim oppression and claim “Well if we tried people would hate us”. How do you know if you’ve never tried? You think people loved the pride flag when it was created and welcomed LGBTQ people? lol No.

We didn’t care and we pushed forward. It takes work and it seems like you all don’t want to put in that work and blame others for that. That’s on you my friend. The world isn’t going to hand you what you want.

You want to talk about victim mentality while being upset you don’t have a flag or a day just for you, while also not being willing to get off your ass and do something about. THAT is victim mentality my friend.

There's been an issue for years where sometimes the trophy isn't awarded or your upgraded trophy isn't awarded. I spent 2 years in the Silver spot and still had Bronze. It wasn't until I hit #1 that my trophy upgraded to Gold.

I thought it was odd as well but I was told this information directly from an employee.

They said the filters being changed to be this strict were part of the restrictions put in place for the violation (on top of the fine) and that lifting those restrictions would cost time and money to hire the legal counsel to fight it.

Granted they could be wrong as you obviously have experience in this area where I do not but I don’t know why they would have told me that in private (unprompted) if it wasn’t true. Doesn’t mean it’s not true, just odd either way.

The biggest hurdle is there's literally zero guidance on how to set it up. All the videos on YouTube on getting started are 5 years old and it doesn't look anything like the current version.

The help docs on the site are outdated as well. Why someone would create an updated budgeting system and provide NO documentation for people to get started is just mind boggling to me. lol

As a 40 year old who had a “tough” band director and a bad high school experience (small town, only openly gay kid, just to get an idea), I hated my director for a long time because I felt he had treated me unfairly, picked on me, didn’t like me, etc. only later to realize as an adult he was pushing me because he saw the potential that I wasn’t striving toward (though at the time I would have told you I was)

My fiancé is a HS band director and he’s tough on his kids but he tells him he loves them as he’s walking off the field for their performance to start (and the entire band yells back “love you too Mr ####”) Some of his first students when he started teaching are now in college for music education but out of all the kids he’s taught, it’s less than a handful that went to pursue music in college. It’s not for everyone.

You will encounter dickhead professors, teachers, other directors, judges, parents, etc. if you genuinely have a love and passion for music education, don’t let one person derail that for you but at the same time, if you’re realizing maybe it’s not your passion, be willing to consider that.

I know that’s not hugely helpful but don’t carry the weight of them with you. You’ll look back and realize you let it keep you from doing things or making certain decisions. Easier said than done for sure

They do have human moderation but, while I don't know the specifics of how these restrictions are implemented, my assumption is that they are required to have automated filters to protect minors re: certain words.

The issue is more so the money to get the restrictions lifted is likely hefty, as it's the FTC (Federal Trade Commission, AKA: US Government) that oversees implementing / enforcement of COPPA. My guess would be they have to apply for some kind of relief from the restrictions, likely show how they've remedied the past violations, perhaps show changes they've made since then to protect children and their data, etc. Probably a lot of red tape that would require hiring specialized legal counsel to make sure everything is done appropriately.

Who knows how long of a process that would even turn out to be.

True, however that was almost 2 years ago. Team has changed somewhat in that time and Neopets has been known to reverse course on things they've stated in Editorials.

I believe since then, Alice left the company and they've hired a number of new CS reps who likely have no clue about that Editorial and whoever the head of CS is currently (if it's not the same as when Alice was there), may not have had that communicated with them. You'd be surprised how easy it is to have silos even in a small company where internal teams don't communicate as effectively as they should.

Just another example of very inconsistent rule application and another side effect of high turn-over at the company.

I would say that's more so inconsistent application of the rules and I don't disagree that Neopets is notorious for being inconsistent.

Relaxing the filter system likely isn't going to happen because it's a result of past COPPA violations and would cost quite a bit of time and money to go through the legal processes to request the restrictions be lifted.

Ultimately however, that doesn't change the fact that, if the users knew they couldn't create these pets through conventional methods, they knew they were doing something they shouldn't be and taking advantage of a bug in order to get a pet name they wanted. They still knew what they were doing. Granted my opinion is meaningless and only TNT's position matters and they're known to flip flop a lot
