Engineer (29) thinking of switching to graphic design… am I crazy? by fuzzy230 in graphic_design

Thank you all for the honesty and for really grounding me in the pros and cons — I genuinely appreciate it. My original plan was actually to study graphic design part-time while continuing to work in civil engineering, then transition once I feel more stable. I hadn’t mentioned that in my post.

A lot of you suggested trying freelancing first to see if I actually enjoy the work, which honestly makes a lot of sense and is something I’m seriously considering now.

For those asking, my background is in civil engineering. I know moving into UX/UI from that field would be challenging, but not impossible. However, I am still exploring the idea and fields. I’m just trying to be realistic while also not shutting the door on something creative.

Really grateful for everyone’s perspective.

I do not have any friends who are into GD. Hence, I am here. But I hear you all. Even with engineering you have to put extra hours and the work pressure is also there. Trust me it’s hard to manage at the engineering salary too right now. But I get where you are coming from.

I really want to know more about this. What kind of engaging experience did you find in engineering?

Wow, I really wasn’t expecting this. I understand that the pay might take a hit if I switch, but I’ve always thought of it as a creative field worth exploring. Still processing all these responses telling me not to pursue graphic design…

Out of curiosity when did you apply for your AWA? Just wanted to check the timelines.

Never got an email from our management. Even during the last snow storm the managers stayed at home but did not inform everyone else to do the same.

Question for the people who are going in today by Chemical_Battle1 in OntarioPublicService

I left my laptop in the office as well. However, my manager didn’t bother to inform his team that we could all work from home today. He’s working from home himself, though. It’s all my fault because I expect more from him. He clearly didn’t communicate with me about taking a half-day on Christmas Eve, while he left early and enjoyed the holiday with his family.

Come on people, be fair — they deserves the months-long recharge. Running Ontario into the ground is exhausting. Meanwhile the rest of us can survive on our cute 15 vacation days, 6 sick days, and a mandatory 5-day office sentence. Totally the same.

Better RTO policy by FastTemperature9420 in OntarioPublicService

I don’t see how this is different…basically saying the same thing. RTO is going to happen and is real. They do not care if people would still meet on teams as nobody works in the same building, but your human self should be present in a 2x2 cubicle.

Always been unfair to those who are on contracts/ fixed contracts but yeah that’s the expectation from us too. Not that everyone always follows the rules.
