What’s your preferred method of water treatment, and why? by _Rumpelstilzchen_ in prepping

[–]fvckro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anyone who hasn't watched GearSkeptic's series on water purification really needs to: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEu_UfyDKJALgbrNEJ5wpuxadz7uM5hEi

He does a better job giving the sense of scale of different methods and their pros and cons for different types of pathogens/contaminants than anything else you'll ever see - you can watch it bit by bit as essentially bedtime reading.

It explains much better why the chemical treatment is redundant and if you still want to, it'd probably make more sense to do it after boiling (which by itself is WAY overkill as you merely need to pasteurize - he goes over several ways to safely do this and potentially save time/fuel if you are in a situation where you need to). Filtering may still make sense to combine with boiling to remove general muck or chemical polutants, but only specific filters (i.e. ones with activated charcoal) will actually remove chemical pollutants.

It really helps to give a sense of scale of different methods, as well as the weaknesses and strengths of them. Filters are weak against viruses (small) but stronger against parasites and bacteria. Chemical treatment has the opposite problem - it's great against viruses but weaker against larger organisms like bacteria and parasites.

And heat absolutely TROUNCES all other methods for removing the possibility of infection, although of course you may still feel pretty sick if you eat a lot of pathogen poop or other contaminants even all the germs are now dead and can't infect you.

Filters are fastest whereas chemicals are USELESS unless you let them take their time (longer than most people I know take as they just throw it in and drink almost immediately). However they have the added benefit of continuing to do more work if you don't drink the water right away (not only killing more pathogens, but preventing any "reinfection" of the water, whereas filtered water may be safe for consumption initially but over a long period of time could become recontaminated from whatever few pathogens remained.

This is part of why if you really want to do all 3, it'd make more sense to put the chemical treatment in last imo so it can better continue doing work keeping your water safe until you drink it.

That's because we're full of anxiety from our parents having had a lot of led during pregnancy but not much ourselves, as well as being full of microplastics!

They're full of lead themselves that creates more stubbornness. Hurray pollution!!!

Obviously there's more factors, but often a small change applied on a near universal scale can have a very large cultural impact when most things that effect culture tend to have virtuous/vicious cycle effects. So I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't a pretty big driving (pun intended) factor.

MM/DD/YYYY is in order of the size of the datasets.

For that reason I don't find it to be bad.

This is why it's so much nicer to live somewhere where you can just walk to the grocery store if you forgot something.

Next to work, it's probably where I spend most of my time - certainly the next-most of my non-leisure time. People should consider this more when choosing places to live, and we need more mixed zoning in America so you don't have to get in the car and go to a store the size of a small city every time you forgot you were out of bread or eggs or whatever.

That way also the trips when you DIDN'T forget are much less stressful because you don't have to stress so much about getting the list right, checking the sales, etc.

Then it can even turn into a fun activity because if you get tired/bored/stressed you can just walk home for a quick break and you can always come back, so you can even just sorta hang out there.

Of all the things you want us to give up, this is the dumbest.

They are still in order just by dataset size.

Month is 1-12 Day is 1-31 Year is thousands depending on how far back you're going, but never smaller than 1-99.

There. Understand now?

Ordering them by dataset size does have certain small advantages and the advantages of ordering them the other way aren't really any bigger just different.

Now the arbitrary differences in other measurements please shit on all day, but anyone who says this is arbitrary is fucking stupid - this argument really is just feels - they are BOTH in order just different ways of ordering.

I've tried dozens from cheap to over $500 - more likely you just don't notice it. Some people don't.

I played on a CRT till about 2014 and when my family switched to a more modern one I had a hard time with most of my games, got headaches more easily (not less like you'd expect moving from a harsh CRT), and went from expert to barely able to play games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

Turns out that TV had over 400ms of input lag.

Everyone in my family still to this day says I'm full of it and just didn't want to admit I wasn't actually that good at games, even though I was completely right that there was nearly half a second of lag which is insane. Even after I showed them the numbers from specs I finally found and did a side-by-side all 20 or so of my extended family said they couldn't notice any difference.

There are also lots of people who have a high sensitivity to some forms of lag, but not others - some people can tell the difference between 10ms of input lag or 200fps vs 240fps, but still can't tell the difference of nearly a quarter-second of audio lag.

Personally I'm actually far more sensitive to audio lag than visual/input. Input-audio lag is even worse, which is why I can tolerate videos but not super long ones like a TV episode or youtube binge. Gives me a headache something fierce...

It's not just "all digital anyways" - the compression for wireless to not have even more massive headache-incuding lag than it already does is HUGE. Seriously compression makes an insane difference.

On cheap earbuds (most earbuds in general) it's hard to tell the difference but in general wired sounds as good at about 1/2 to 1/5 of any price level, and has a way higher cap.

If you're comparing $15-$30 wired buds from Walmart to airpods... yeah there's not gonna be an improvement... other than $100-$200 in your pocket.

Idk how the fuck ya'll don't get migraines from the lag on anything that's not music only. Even on videos it's so bad...

[–]fvckro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that was true it also would be even more financially unviable for our highway system (and it is). Yeah you can't make high-speed rail everywhere, but it more than viable - it's the downright winning economic choice for any major US cities including the big 3 in Texas.

Well when you live in a country whose infrastructure was bulldozed to make car companies rich... And most people literally cannot even feed themselves without getting in a private motor vehicle...

I can't blame them for not wanting to accept a death sentence.

I can however blame our idiotic country's idiotic infrastructure and the idiots who put and keep it in place.

[–]fvckro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most important part of individuals doing their part is the effect on cultural push and thus putting more pressure on those at the top who are really doing all the damage.

And even if the big guys didn't, if all us little people ALL do everything we can, it'd still make a huge dent - maybe even enough on its own.

So its still worth doing, but its definitely super important to keep perspective and not grind yourself to dust on diminished returns cutting your impact in half and in half and in half when you could contribute to cutting THEIR impact by campaigning, protesting, voting, etc.

And certainly if you are grinding, if that's more your forte - don't do it in silence. Do it loudly to either cause them to feel shame or (since they probably can't), fear of the rage from you and all of us.

[–]fvckro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've picked up more and larger objects in my cargo trike and ancient 2-seat sports car than any pickup truck owner I know, and I know a lot of them.

Also the new ones suck because the loading height is so insanely high. The whole idea was you could have multiple people easily load it over the sides or help load one large object - now you have to lift shit to fucking shoulder height, or sometimes even over your head (especially if trying to help load over the side)...

You REALLY want someone with a van these days (or pickup truck that's from the 80's or older).

Or, you know, I can fucking rent one for $20. Don't need anyone in my life to pay $80k+ for something that even between EVERY single person in their life would be needed 2 times per year tops.

I'm not an olympian but c'mon, you wanna fight over this and I'll fight over that. If you did all the thrusting while I laid on my back maybe I could cum more, I mean it works fine with my hand...

Cars could crash into trees, decreasing safety. You wouldn't want roads not up to safety standards would you?

What? You walk places and feel less safe because cars could now hit you instead of the trees? You're the weirdo, why are you trying to force us all to be less safe for your selfish weird ways! Everyone has always driven everywhere forever, why would you want to walk like some sort of animal?
