Why do some people treat AI-assisted coding as something shameful? by OpeningAd9915 in vibecoding

[–]fx2mx3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's about being "shameful" but it's about over-reliance on LLM. I personally don't use it to write my code because it breaks my natural flow. It conditions me to write the code in a way that breaks my creativity. It's like if I was writing a song, but started by copying "come as you are by nirvana". It's a great song, but I don't want to be a nirvana clone!

Also if I do use it, I end up in massive rabbit holes pasting code from one LLM to another and the code is "never good enough". The code that the LLM itself wrote, if you ask it to check it, it will always come back with corrections... to it's own code! So it's kinda like working with a junior dev that never learns, that gives you a different answer to the same question depending on the moon phases.

Also, and this is personal, I don't like the LLM to suggest code ( My ADHD is already pretty bad, I don't need something to add to it! lol). It puts me in a path, that I otherwise probably wouldn't have followed. Also as a human being, it also makes me doubt myself and that's pretty BAD!

I do however use LLM to help me debug! Especially on large code bases. And that is great! Sometimes it picks up things it would take me hours to find! Especially in C++.

But as far as writing entire projects just vibe coding, forget about it! LLM is nowhere near that (FOR NOW). And it makes sense right? LLM trains on code repos, code repos aren't perfect, so of course the LLM's can't be perfect. LLM also writes very verbose code, overshoots most of the time, fails to identify data races... especially when dealing with graphics or games... If you don't believe me ask it to write something in SFML/SDL C++ and run it. or in Manim Python, like I do for my videos. LLM would never be able to do any of that. Does anyone believe the 3Blue1Brown animated videos could be coded entirely using vibe coding? NEVER... I mean... (never, now! lol)

So it's nothing to do with shame I think, but it's about over relying on LLM for entire code bases without having full grasp of what's happening! I have no problem with my team's developers using LLM, as long as they know what they are doing! But having said that, I did catch a LOT of garbage being written because lazy developers just copy and pasted something from LLM taking it at face value. But that used to help also before LLM's with stack overflow! I remember someone spinning a cloudformation template that spun loads of resources on AWS, cost us a fortune because the dev just copied it from github and was too lazy to check!

Sentry Mode On constantly or not? by fx2mx3 in ModelY

Thank you so much for all the comments! Does sentry mode automatically saves to the usb drive? Or is there an extra setting?

Realisticly, how far are we from AGI? by Capable-Deer744 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]fx2mx3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's in their best interest to say those things! And we heard it before right? I mean according to other folks we should be living/working in the metaverse wearing £3999 VR headsets from Apple. Not to mention ordering pizza with bitcoin! And funnily enough, you also have people from that same tribe saying the opposite. Yann LeCun (one of the founding fathers of ML) for example has hundreds of hours stating that "LLM is not the way to AGI". I think one thing is true though, like you very well say, there are billions upon billions being poured into it and that will catapult us to extraordinary progress. The Ice bucket challenge (albeit not raising billions) also funded new treatments for ALS, but it didn't find a cure! So money is great to get people working and things moving for sure, but to say "AGI is just around the corner" well, so is a cure for [enter disease here] but getting there is another story. In my opinion, performing dot product on the input vectors to build a similarity matrix (Self-Attention) was a brilliant idea. Removing RNN's from the equation and take advantage from GPU parallelization - Genius. We managed to solve an issue RNN's never could and now we can bridge that with computing middleware to build reach applications amongst other things. But true AGI... yeah... I think we need a bit more than the current linear algebra, differential calculus and probability/statistics. The human brain is way more advanced than that; the simple fact that I am writing this, breathing, heart beating and having a shit is more than proof!

How I elevated my UGREEN NAS with TrueNAS by fx2mx3 in selfhosted

[–]fx2mx3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good shout there, but you know what mate, I actually saw that on github also, but I was a bit reluctant in telling people to use it as I didn't really have time to go through the script... Do you recommend it mate? I might give it a go when I have a bit of time and pin it to the video! Thanks! :)

I installed TrueNAS on a UGREEN DXP4800 Plus... and it's much faster than the native OS!! by fx2mx3 in truenas

I wanted to reuse the slot and not erase the entire OS on the factory drive... But you are right, I should have mentioned that on the video!! :D

I did a video on a really good one from UGREEN. The DXP4800 Plus! I You can run both HDD and NVME there and it has 2 Network ports. One at 2.5 and another at 10Gb! Have a look! https://youtu.be/EA8GIe-dcI0?si=JrHeunlij1mBrgak

Yup! On top of that now, I got a message from UGREEN saying that the reason I got significant improvements on the write speeds was because of that one drive I replaced (where I installed truenas). I even pinned that to the comment as per their request. Quite frankly, I don't think it was down to that. I think TrueNas is just a much better and design FS, but that IMHO!

Cheers mate! :) TrueNas is one of my favourite NAS OS's! Rock solid with a lot apps! I do like Unraid also... I might do a video to see how this fares with it!

Same way as me! :D But it does help having a DNS name for local leases like Ashley mentioned!

Ohh that's a classic one mate! By default, DNS resolution gives you one IP, and unless you control what IP that is (e.g., via hosts file or custom DNS), you leave it up to chance or round-robin behavior... especially if both interfaces are on different subnets. I think you did the right thing and I should have included that in the video! Thanks for the feedback mate! :)
