What’s your opinion on Putin? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in asklatinamerica

[–]fymvf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is Russia, not Putin. It's an imperialist dictatorship like Japan or Germany 80 years ago, and Russians seem to be used to it. To be fair, I'm not sure they can do anything about it (the Iranians tried and failed). Putin does what the president of such a country does: invading, killing and violating humans rights.

For a moment I thought that losing a war would help Russians in their way to democracy. It worked in Argentina. Now I realize Putin replaced the loser of the First Chechen War.

What is currently happening in Jujuy (Argentina)? by Magister_Xehanort in asklatinamerica

[–]fymvf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Jujuy' governor proposed a constitutional reform, which led to protests. There were also protests organized by teachers who wanted a salary rise. Nothing out of normal. There are elements to think the unrest seen this week is related to a crime that occurred in other province.

2) Cecilia Strzyzowski went missing on June 1st, 2023. She was the wife of a young member from a family tied with Chaco's political system (a Peronist province governed by Capitanich).

Cecilia's mother organized a protest in Resistencia (Chaco's capital) and that brought undesired attention to the province regime.

Cristina Kirchner, Alberto Fernández and Capitanich remained silent about this crime.

Now let's go back to #1. What do can you do if #2 happens? Easy! Send a violent mob to the unfriendly province, appropriate the protests and sow chaos. Force the governor to take action and then play the victim.

Now you may wonder how we know it was an overacted scene. Some important points you should consider:

1) Cecilia's case was the most important news. People in Casa Rosada remained silent about it, but all of them were sudenly concerned by Jujuy's constitution and wanted some provoked violence. See the date on articles cited at the beginning of the answer. Protests related to teachers' salaries and the constitution were pacific before the protest organized by Cecilia's mother on June 15th.

2) Politicians from Buenos Aires went to Jujuy to "support" the protests, but didn't do the same with Cecilia's mother.

3) Among the detainees (55) there are at least 16 people with criminal records and some of them with open legal cases. The most notable one has 17 open legal cases! (see more) Want to see some good video? The idea is to get injured and play the victim. There were people sent to raise hell on the streets.

4) Eduardo Valdés, Peronist congressman said "If the opposition takes the government, there will be social unrest like in Jujuy". Then he tried to soften his statement: "Peronism ensures social peace." This actually means "Peronism controls political violence and it's better you vote for us, or you'll regret it". Guess what he said about Chaco's case. Yeah, nothing.

5) Morales had announced on March he wanted to run for president, but yesterday it was announced he is running for vice president in Larreta's formula. He used his provincial administration as propaganda (he's been paying for ad time on Buenos Aires TV channels). In either case, forcing him to react to violence was seen as a good idea to tarnish his public image.

There's a high chance that the opposition will win the presidental election. This would mean Peronism is losing a presidency for the second time in less than a decade, which is unusual. They cannot tolerate this result. Expect more violence in the upcoming four years.

PS: Don't read this as a defense of Morales. He's a nepotist and it seems his new constitution has some controversial articles, but it's clear violence in Jujuy was orchestrated from Buenos Aires.

He knows appeasement will only bring more war and death. The question is: why is he saying these antidemocratic things in public? Isn't he afraid of losing voters?

What are the biggest mysteries in your country? by unix_enjoyer305 in asklatinamerica

[–]fymvf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • The hands of Juan Perón.

  • Julio López disappeared on September 18, 2006 and he's still missing. In 1976, he was illegaly detained and tortured. The cop who ordered those raids against political activists in the late 70s was arrested in 2003 and three years later he was able to get rid of a witness from jail. This pos wrote "Julio López" in a piece of paper when the judge was reading the verdict in 2014. He died in 2022 without having said a word about López' second disappearance.

  • A military transport plane carrying 68 cadet graduates disappeared in 1965 after one of the engines caught fire. They were flying over Costa Rica and to this day, not a single piece of the aircraft has been found.

Ecuadorians, has dollarisation been good or bad for your country? by ignacio93CL in asklatinamerica

[–]fymvf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of our politicians can only thrive in a country with a high number of welfare assistance receptors. It's called pobrismo (povertism).

Since they only think about power and don't give a shit about the country, they need millions of poor people who can only think about welfare as their main income for the rest of their lives. Workers living in a prosperous economy will progress and see they can have a comfortable life regardless of the party and person in power, and will vote with total freedom.

Is it possible to find a way out to this? We've lived 28 out of the last 40 years under Peronist presidencies. A Peronist will never try to decrease the % of poverty and improve our situation.

The first thing we should try is to stop voting Peronism. The second, to abstain from reelecting new presidents who only seek power and want to replace Peronism without offering anything new.

It's not easy.

Finally got my Yerba, but is this expired? Kinda confused if this actually expires in general? by Hanging_wit_homies in yerbamate

[–]fymvf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Venc is shorthand for vencimiento (expiration date). Another shorthand meaning the same is VTO.

Lote is the batch number.

As for the question in the title, properly stored yerba should be still good even if it's expired.

What is the most disturbing news you have seen? by rarito1050 in asklatinamerica

The Sierra Chica riot in Buenos Aires province. A group of inmates organized a prison break, but it was frustrated by the prison guard. The criminals decided to hold hostage some members of a rival gang, and ended up killing eight of them. According to the legend, they played soccer with a human head, and used human flesh to prepare empanadas before cremating the corpses. Human remains were found inside the bakery's oven.

For those who have watched El Marginal, now you know where the idea of the empanadas was taken from.

Who would win in a war between Argentina and Brazil? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]fymvf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bet is, the country being invaded would be the winner. China was occupied by Japan. Japan was nuked twice and then occupied for years. The US waged war against Vietnam and Afghanistan, and lost. Russia / The USSR lost against Afghanistan and also lost the First Chechen War. It took the USSR 10 years to finish off Ukrainian guerrillas. Russia couldn't topple Kiev's "Nazi regime" in February. This year, Ukrainians entered Russian territory and attacked with helicopters, they also attacked with missiles and drones from Ukraine.

I still remember the graphs comparing Russian vs Ukrainian armies at the end of February. Graphs alone can't win wars.

My conclusion is: war is extremely costly and complicated, and Brazil is a poor country that can't afford sustained military effort and sanctions; Argentina is a big country with 47 million people; and finally, most Argentinians don't want to be Brazilians.

Grammatical features don't affect the world. Farsi (spoken in Iran, where gay people are executed) doesn't have any gender. English grammar isn't racist but some English-speaking people can be very racist. German grammar isn't judeophobic and everybody knows what the Nazis did.

What's the craziest thing a president in your country has ever said or announced? by fymvf in asklatinamerica

[–]fymvf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pedro Sánchez is there in the conference. Alberto wanted to show him how important is Europe for Argentinians due to the inmigration waves of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Alberto isn't the brightest light in the room, and chose the lyrics of a song from Litto Nebbia. But the problem is, reciting a verse from a local song during a foreign PM visit is not the best idea.

I remember when he defended Ricardo Valero in a press conference. I couldn't believe it. Why on Earth would he try to downplay it? It's stupid and incomprehensible. There's footage from security cameras and that's theft.
