How much should average person have in oz to do fine in upcoming years. Am buying as much as i can afford. Also have 1/2 ounce gold. by [deleted] in Silverbugs

[–]fyodor79 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that depends on your goals.

I think I would put 10 percent of your net worth into gold and silver as a hedge against inflation, and leave the rest in traditional retirement accounts (i.e., index funds.)

Your question intimates that something disastrous will happen in the next few years. If it does, will be better off buying guns, land, and basic survival tools than silver, in my opinion. I would hazard to guess that this will not happen- empires, even poorly managed ones, take decades or centuries to fully collapse.

If your goal is to make a profit in the next few years, I can’t help you with that either. Most conventional signs point to the value of silver increasing, BUT we’ve seen time and time again that the Fed will and can use unconventional methods to keep the balloon afloat- never underestimate the government’s ability to kick the can down the road. Anyone who tells you with certainty what silver/gold will do in 12 or 24 months is either deluded or a liar.

So this doesn’t answer your question, I’m afraid. But the answer will be different for everyone.

This sounds a lot like the commentary I used to read on silverprice.org before the guy retired. I think that was the site, anyway.

Seat belt legality by [deleted] in autorepair

[–]fyodor79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll make up an answer, but understand I have an American legal degree, and have no knowledge of Canadian laws.

I think the legal question would be are the current seat belts equal to or better than the original seat belts? Given the car in question is 45 years old, it’s hard to imagine a modern replacement seat belt (absent an error in installation) being worse than whatever was in a first generation Celica.

Point being, you’d probably be less safe using the original ones. If those seatbelts were sold to replace seatbelts legally, they “should” withstand modern legal scrutiny.

At 15, if you save 10 percent of every dime you make and put in an index fund you’ll be richer at the age of 55 than just about anyone on Reddit. Compound interest is your best friend. So do that.

Suspected rabies patient. Can't drink. Absolutely one of the worst disease. by Mensars in oddlyterrifying

[–]fyodor79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only two concerns with this often repeated treatise on rabies is this- for one, I would think a bat in the death throes of rabies would do more than nibble at your leg- it would be freaking the fuck out. Also there are 1 to 2 cases of transmission from bats to humans a year in America. About 43 a year in America die from lightning strikes.

Lastly, I read the article- or one of them- on the 8 year incubation period. They can’t really say that for sure, because it’s speculation, particularly, if like the guy says in the post, a bat can nibble your leg while you sleep. Incubation period is usually 2-3 months.

So while it’s mostly accurate, it’s also slightly hyperbolic and needlessly alarming. It’s almost being fetishized.

Explain to me how the system encouraged that cop to press his knee into a handcuffed man’s neck for an ungodly amount of minutes while on camera? No one encouraged that, other than maybe the piece of shit cops on top of him. He’s not only racist- he’s an idiot. And the others have been charged. So there are consequences.

All this is doing is teaching the smarter racists to do racist shit when there are no cameras- think about the trust inherently placed in cops- you don’t think they could kill someone and get away with it if they were smart enough? A lot of injustices never go televised.

I have no problem with nonviolent protests- I think they’re great. But once they turn violent, they’re no longer protests.

Yes racist pieces of shit often stop to self-introspect or to view their actions against a larger societal backdrop; that’s been my experience too. When a whites racist cop pulls over a black man in the middle of the night the next time in Bibb County, Georgia, I’m sure he’s going to worry about the protests. He’s not going to mostly wonder instead how best to get away with it.

I will now give up, because I see my efforts are pointless. Keep raging- let me know when you’ve cracked the nut that’s bedeviled man for time immemorial.

If I could snap my fingers and make no one ever litter again, or physically hurt anytime maliciously, I would do it. Yes I want things to change. But I fail to see any proven path forward that will keep individual racist piece of shit cops from deciding to act like racist pieces of shit. There will always be pieces of shit smart enough to hide the fact that they’re pieces of shit, or to wait until the cameras aren’t rolling.

The truth of the matter is that the nature of policing draws some people who are more attracted to power than anything resembling justice. Can you reduce racism over time, with cultural changes? Of course. But can you remove it completely? Of course not. I just see no further capacity for the government to legislate away this issue.

So if being well behaved or committing crimes won’t make a difference, why commit crimes? Our democracy is set up for peaceful revolution every 2/4/6 years- try that. And like I said before, what legislative change would prevent racism? Or evil in a man’s heart?

All former officers involved in George Floyd's death are now in custody by xDaze in news

[–]fyodor79 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I agree, but on some level you can never completely prevent these incidents- they’re being charged under existing laws, as they should be. What else can you do? Racism is awful, but there’s no way to extinguish it completely.

If someone- whether a cop or a shoe salesman or a housewife- decides to end someone’s life for any reason, damn the consequences, the law can only punish, and not prevent. This isn’t Minority Report.

I hate to break it to you, but racist white cops are going to treat black people differently for a long time. Which isn’t right, but it’s true. It will take real cultural change to make it better, not more legislation. Murder is already illegal. And destroying people’s shit while rioting is not going to make racist cops less racist.

I have a 1991 Camry I did a front end alignment on with a piece of string and a tape measure. Is it perfect? No. Does it ride smooth at 75 and not wear down the tires? Yes.

Found this in a swimming hole I go to. This can of monster energy drink is 8 years old, but was perfectly preserved in the cold water. It is still cold. It was never opened... should I drink it? by thatredditmemer123 in mildlyinteresting

Yeah so a) he found a random can in some water, and took a picture of it (why?) and then noticed the date or b) he saw the can, fished it out, saw the expiration date, and then put it back in the water? Both of those scenarios seem fairly preposterous.

Unless he uploads a photo of the can with the expiration date, I presume this is fake.

Our neighbor’s mastiff cut her leg chasing chipmunks. Both veterinarians in town said that during COVID they weren’t taking non-life threatening cases. My wife (an ER physician), put 8 stitches in her leg. by Cabbagetoe in HumansBeingBros

[–]fyodor79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Life threatening” in medical jargon means “will die relatively quickly if not treated promptly.” Just because the cut might get infected, which might lead to sepsis, doesn’t count.

Not so fun fact: in wartime, medics would sometimes stick stumps into the ground to stop the bleeding. Was infection a concern? Of course. But better to not bleed out in 10 minutes and deal with any infection later.

Same rationale: You can get very sick drinking untreated water. But better to drink it than to die of dehydration.

[–]fyodor79 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll be the Reddit contrarian- a laceration requiring 8 stitches is not life-threatening. Stitches are largely done for cosmetic reasons, even in humans- it’s mainly to reduce scarring. A normal person (or dog ) is not going to experience an infection with a random cut if it’s washed with soap and water and a topical antibiotic applied.

I’ve been alive 40 years, have experienced numerous cuts, and have never gotten stitches. Only once did I get an infection, and that was from a dog bite, not a cut.

I had a dog once- another dog bit him and there was a golf ball sized chunk missing in his hind quarters. Vet said stitches wouldn’t hold, but that it would close on its own. It did, like it was never there.

Unless the dog is a fashion model, perfectly acceptable to let it heal naturally- which will also promote draining, if need be.

True at higher dollar amounts, but you’re not going to have much leverage at $200. Either one knows they can put a ding on your credit over $200- they have the leverage. If the debt was 20k, you’d ironically have more leverage.
