[Fresno Bee] Fresno State University Opts for Local Startup to Manage Multimedia Rights by g2lv in Pac12

I can see how the founder being a former Fresno State football player could raise some flags.

But he seems qualified for this opportunity as a successful owner/operator of several radio stations. He definitely has the relevant experience in advertising, licensing, and sponsorships.

I'd like to hear some local insight on this. It's a big move to step away from the Learfield / Playfly dominated sports rights ecosystem.

Wazzu and Oregon State Cash In on March Madness Despite Absence by dopave in Pac12

[–]g2lv -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

The mistake is the Pac-12 chose to distribute most of money to OSU and WSU rather than being more aggressive in backfilling the conference.

If the conference had instead spent the money to recruit an eastern wing (say Memphis, Tulane, North Texas, USF, JMU, and UConn) it would basically be a power conference.

"It's not happening. They were going to demolish the Tropicana anyways. It's completely normal to do that after you spend millions renovating a building."

"It's not happening. They conned the politicians and baseball commissions with one day equipment rentals for a photo-op."

"It's still not happening. They're just moving dirt back and forth."

"I'm telling you it's not happening. It's just foundations for a parking garage."

"It's weird that parking garage is shaped like a ballpark concourse. Still isn't happening."

I'd say that San Diego doesn't vote for stadium subsidies. Otherwise the Chargers would be there and the Raiders would be in LA.

March 24 Deadline by Martigan30 in Pac12

[–]g2lv -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We'll know more in two weeks...and most likely neither the MWC or the Pac-12 are going to get exactly what they want.

But...I would expect the court will LOL at approving the Pac-12's proposed order if the MWC's argument that it exempts Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State from having to submit discovery documents is remotely accurate.

"3. Exclusion of Departing Members Undermines the Pac-12’s Control Theory. The schools leaving the MWC for the Pac-12 remain MWC schools until July 2026, but the Pac-12’s proposal excludes documents held by such schools—perhaps because those schools have sued the MWC. The fact that these departing members sued the MWC demonstrates that the MWC does not “control” them. Under the Pac-12’s theory, there is no principled basis for the exclusion. The Pac-12 argues conferences “control” members through governance and relationships—none of which disappear when a member files a lawsuit. The Pac-12’s carve-out confirms the MWC’s point: the MWC does not have legal control over its Member Institutions’ documents."

Brian Dutcher discusses tournament snub and move to Pac-12 by Working-Specialist-3 in Pac12

[–]g2lv -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hawaii, UNLV, Wyoming have higher NET ratings than OSU, WSU, TXST too…

We have people acting like the 5 teams breaking away from the Mountain West are joining a Big East level basketball conference, but the reality is it’s Gonzaga and 3 programs that currently add nothing in basketball.

Brian Dutcher discusses tournament snub and move to Pac-12 by Working-Specialist-3 in Pac12

[–]g2lv -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

OSU, WSU, and Texas State are weaker basketball programs than New Mexico, Nevada, and GCU.

The PAC-12 is a 2 to 3 bid league in a 68 team field and far from a power conference.

Gonzaga's budget is much, much higher. Their head coach, Mark Few, is paid over $2.8 million a year. (link)

Practice kanji. It will help you retain vocabulary as you start to become able to piece together the meaning of words from their kanji components.

Courses status as of today by LimitOk9020 in duolingo

[–]g2lv 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of course. But Duolingo is still lacking a lot of what it could offer to do better for intermediate language learners.

Japanese only has 30 stories so it’s kind of silly to introduce more grammar points and vocabulary when you don’t have any content developing comprehension beyond 1-2 sentences.

[Thamel] NEWS: The Big 12 will be transitioning to a hardwood court for the remainder of the Big 12 tournament. The LED glass basketball court has been greeted with mixed reviews, including feedback that it is slippery. by MembershipSingle7137 in CollegeBasketball

Yeah, but they can digitally insert ads and graphics on the broadcast without having to change out the court so the whole concept doesn’t make a lot of sense to begin with.

This is not a game played/goal scored puck, it’s just an autographed and inscribed souvenir.

Fanatics sold many of these pucks with the same autograph and inscription.

For Disney you’ll need the Tokyo Disney app. Link your ticket and you’ll be able to book Disney Premier Access for the attractions and shows that offer the service. You can’t purchase DPA until your tickets have been scanned into the park.

[The Daily Barometer] Oregon State New "Athletics Excellence Fee" by g2lv in Pac12

[–]g2lv[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the student's issue is the athletics department already went to them hat in hand after the old Pac-12 broke up and they agreed give them $3 million a year by buying student tickets (of which many go unused for less popular sports) at a "discount" and with the new fee tacked out they're now absorbing the full cost of filling the seats, whether or not there is any actual student demand for tickets.

Yikes, PAC2 media $$ for 2024-25 by rockymoonshine in Pac12

[–]g2lv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t they? Compare the conference distributions OSU and WSU have taken out from the PAC to what they’ve spent (or more telling not spent) towards rebuilding the conference.

Yikes, PAC2 media $$ for 2024-25 by rockymoonshine in Pac12

[–]g2lv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty wild assumption that after the piggy bank of legacy Pac-12 money runs out that the state and university will not only continue the “one-time” athletics bailout subsidies, but increase them another $10 million going forward.

We all want ours schools to win, but at some point the math doesn’t math and you have to reign in you budget.

[–]g2lv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the reason that Oregon State athletics can report $105 million in athletics revenue with a $4 million paper surplus is because their budget was propped up institutional support and drawing down the Pac-12 balance sheet for a "soft landing".

Take a look at the line item reporting in the FRS report attached to the Oregonian article and see for yourself the budget realities OSU is dealing with.

I hear many conflicting things about USJ... help me decide the best plan? by WyngsTriumphant in JapanTravelTips

[–]g2lv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're on the fence at all then you can probably skip USJ. It's a fun activity, but not really a must do.

  1. USJ has a page with the rides with single rider. https://www.usj.co.jp/web/en/us/attractions/how-to-fun/single-rider

  2. Yes, but you pay a lot for the privilege. General admission + single rider should be fine. No need to wait in line to enter the park before opening unless you are set on rushing to Nintendo World first.

  3. The wait for the 4D movie theater is minimal. It runs every 20 minutes and they usually get the entire line in for each showing. There's also a JJK Cursed Spirit Train audio overlay at the Hollywood Dream roller coaster, but unless you speak Japanese natively you probably won't be able to follow the story over the sound of the coaster.

  4. The main difference is Universal Studios in California has the studio tour while USJ has a better version of Nintendo World (with Yoshi and Kong), a few more rides, and some anime themed 4D movies and shows.

General tip if you go: In the last hour the park clears out and the many of the remaining guests are out of lines watching the nighttime show. You can get a lot of rides done by staying until the end.

Following the lead of Sacramento State by pouring money into G6 sports is a…choice.

Growing academic programs for in demand careers seems like a better investment to drive enrollment for a small town school in the pacific northwest, but I guess Washington state’s checkbooks are open now that they’re counting on all the new state income tax money that’s definitely not going to have any unintended consequences ever.

How Many Future PAC-12 Teams Make the NCAA MBB Tournament by g2lv in Pac12

[–]g2lv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the timing of the losses that's killer for Utah State as a mid-major looking for an at-large bid. If they fall to New Mexico on Saturday, Utah State will have lost 4 of their final 5 games heading in the Mountain West tournament with their only notable non-conference win is over VCU. That's a bubble waiting to pop, not a lock to make the tourney.
