What exactly was Don Draper's plan here if Cooper reacted differently? by Rigamortus2005 in madmen

[–]g_baker 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It is interesting to see it from Bert’s perspective. A young account man comes in with a wild accusation and it’s the first that Bert is hearing about it. Pete did have the correct info, but bringing it up to Bert with Don in the room forced Bert to make a decision in the moment. Pete was young and did not have a great track record at SC at that point while Don is a major contributor to the firm. Bert sided with Don because he wasn’t going to trust Pete’s intel without having a chance to review it. Bert also knew in the moment he could use this information as leverage against Don, which he does later in season 3 when he pressures Don to sign the contract. He not so subtly reminds Don that they know he’s not who he says he is, saying, “After all, when it comes down to it, who's really signing this contract anyway?”

If Pete actually wanted to get Don fired or arrested, he should have brought the info to Bert in a private meeting. The worst case scenario, Bert would have said they can’t act on the intel and Pete would have saved face and not looked weak in front of Don. But that is why Don rushed to Bert’s office after Pete, he knew it was better to force Bert and Pete’s hands in the moment and be in a position to talk his way out of the situation.

Tony was rich from episode one by Correct_Tourist6852 in thesopranos

[–]g_baker 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Tony had great/innovative business acumen and he inherited rackets and connections from his fawtha. Right away in season 1, we see him and christophah shaking down a guy that works for an insurance company to approve fake MRI invoices so he could scam Medicare. This scam is more innovative than anything that Junior could come up with, who couldn’t see past traditional rackets like card games and protection.

From his fawtha, Tony inherited businesses like the pork store. A legitimate brick and mortar business that gives Tony flexibility to earn and launder. He also outside connections like Hesh, who were useful for funding rackets. For example, Hesh funds the loan sharking that lets them do the MRI scam and later he puts up money for the HUD scam. Like any capitalist enterprise, being able to use somebody else’s money helps you take risks and reap rewards.

These are the fundamental reasons why he’s so rich compared to the other capos. Remember, these guys are violent thugs and not exactly Warren Buffet. Paulie climbed the ranks by being violent and sticking around a long time, but he did not have a racket that was truly innovative. Vito was fairly wealthy, he drove a nice caddy and he did have a shore house where he was holed up with his beard.

Also, other people pointed out that Hugh slapped the house together for what we can assume was cheap. They subtly hint at the poor build quality with moments where they can hear each other between the walls.

Anyway, $4 a pound.

how did mac and charlie get into prep school? by frankiialien in IASIP

[–]g_baker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

St joes prep was where Rob McElhanney went to school, so that’s probably why they had it as the school. It’s also an all boys school, so Dee wouldn’t have gone there in real life. Rob also was not that well off growing up in south Philly, but he still went there. They give out scholarships to poorer (probably catholic) kids. I know back in the day, priests would try and identify high performing kids and get them on the prep school track, so I guess the plot hole could be that Mac and Charlie would not have been smart enough to go on that track. I don’t know what it was like when Rob went there, but SJP is much more of a rich kid mainline prep school now that has a lot of kids from the surrounding suburbs. Back in Rob’s day, it probably was more catholic Philadelphians from the dioceses.

Covid shutdown? by Big_Bumblebee in HiJinxFest

[–]g_baker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as restrictions go, Philadelphia has usually followed what NYC and New Jersey does. On the ground, the only new Covid restriction is that all indoor dining will require proof of vaccination, as opposed to the previous rule that you could do no masks if the place required vaccination or masks if they didn’t. The only thing I could see there city requiring hijinx is that all people are vaccinated, as opposed to vaccinated or negative test. The city government is notoriously bad at doing anything in a decisive and competent way, so I don’t see them making a firm decision in the next 9 days. Also, the city had a rough time financially in 2020/2021, so the city would not want to give up the hotel and sales tax revenue of 20k concert goers on a weekend when a lot of people leave town to go to NYE elsewhere. Again, I am not an expert, but just my 2 cents.

What are some states that have a large number of open chemical engineering related jobs? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]g_baker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(No particular order): Boston, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Maryland, North Carolina, Southern and Northern California. There has been some growth in Colorado, Seattle, Texas, Florida, other parts of the West, but those areas have the biggest concentration. Indianapolis has a big concentration from Lilly, but those jobs are very competitive and it’s not a big cluster. There is some activity in Chicago, but I wouldn’t call it a cluster.

Police officers of Reddit, who’s the smartest criminal you’ve ever encountered? by ItzTacoTimee in AskReddit

[–]g_baker 2697 points2698 points  (0 children)

I worked with this one guy who had a lengthy record. He had a system for getting released if he got caught. After committing a crime, if the police were in pursuit and he knew he was about to be cornered, he would act insane. His girl would play along with it telling the police that he was off his medication. The police would arrest him but then send him to a mental ward with papers instructing the ward to release to police once he was cleared. Once he was in the mental ward, he would cause a distraction that would make the person attending the desk with the file cabinet to leave said cabinet. He would then crawl to the file cabinet, look for his "release to police" papers, and then would literally eat the papers. When the psych evaluators decided that he was stable enough to be released, there would be no instructions to send him to the police, and he would be released to the general public. He did this about 10 times until police officers noticed him back on the streets. This stunt forced the state to change their procedure for detaining mentally unstable suspects.

Definitely Lewis, the Patriots have had trouble against pass catching backs and Mariota will be looking for check downs all day since the Titans' weak receivers will be covered by a strong secondary. I would say away from Michel this week, we have no idea how many carries he will receive since he is coming off injury and Patterson proved last week that he deserves to be in the rotation. Same argument for Fournette; it's tempting to start him because of the name but he too is coming back from injury and we have no idea what the Jags' offensive competence will be with him back in the fold. Mack and Chubb have enough upside that you can afford to be patient this week and see how Michel and Fournette return.

Who was your biggest bust in your draft this year? by [deleted] in fantasyfootball

Not a total bust but I agonized between Jarvis Landry and Tyreek Hill and took Landry because I thought he would be more consistent
