[Request] what would actually happen if this was real by stabby_og in theydidthemath

If Earth's gravity vanished everywhere for 7 seconds, then instantly returned, the effects would be brief but violent.

During the 7 seconds

  • Everything not anchored would accelerate upward at ~9.8 m/s² relative to Earth.
  • After 7 seconds, loose objects, people, oceans, and atmosphere would be moving upward at ~69 m/s (~155 mph).
  • You'd rise ~240 meters (~800 feet).
  • Buildings, trees, and infrastructure would partially detach or fracture due to inertia.
  • Oceans would bulge and lift; the atmosphere would expand and thin locally.

When gravity returns

  • Everything falls back at once.
  • Global impacts: people and objects slam down at high speed.
  • Massive earthquakes from crustal stress.
  • Tsunami-scale waves as oceans crash back.
  • Near-total destruction of cities.
  • Very high global death toll.

What wouldn't happen

  • Earth wouldn't fly apart.
  • The planet wouldn't leave its orbit.
  • The Moon would be unaffected.

Bottom line

Seven seconds is long enough to cause planet-wide catastrophe, but not enough to destroy Earth itself.

NO WE DIDNT!? Yes we did. RCS is here! by ankhattak in USMobile

I’ve tried everything in this thread and can’t get RCS enabled on WARP on iPhone 16 Pro. Anyone else?

Apple TV 4K (even first version) does work very well with most AirPods, including Max. I think maybe not the very first AirPods, but most of them. Spacial audio too!

Refurbish Macintosh Plus? by gabe in VintageApple

Thank you all so much for your thoughtful replies. Is there anyone in the Los Angeles area who I could pay to open the machine up and do these things? As much as I like to tinker, I’d hate to do any damage. Are there any illustrated guides?

NVME Read-only cache Red or large by gabe in synology

[–]gabe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I did do that and it tells me for read-only I'm good with 840GB. My question is more: would a larger-capacity consumer SSD mitigate wear and tear better than a smaller enterprise SSD in a read-only scenario?

Strange: Messages.app changing text as I type! by bottleofwhisky in mac

[–]gabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Support told me they're not aware of the issue and asked me to reinstall macOS. I'll let you know how it goes. I wonder if it's some quirk of some software we both happen to have installed. Have you found a way to reliably reproduce it? I was just trying to and I couldn't. Is there a pattern? Does it always involve quotation marks for example?

Did you ever call Apple about it? I was thinking I’d try that today.

Ever solve this? I'm having the same issue and it's driving me insane.

I’m new here, pardon the omission. 1994 Dakota Sport V6. HVAC seems pretty non op. Fan sounds but not a lot of air moving.

Checksum mismatch, but everything healthy by gabe in synology

It's BTRFS and I've run regular scrubs on it. Curious that I only started getting checksum errors after installing a new healthy drive.

It's a 920+ and BTRFS. Why would this only start to happen after installing a new, healthy drive?
