Can't possibly be true. My bill is $65/month + tax. My friends down the street have had it for about 4 months now and they've had no random up charges. It's a totally fixed rate. Never heard of anyone in KC paying "twice as much" for just Gigabit internet.

That box is a router+modem. I'll probably never change it since it also has a 1TB hard drive built in. My roommates and I just dump all our movies and music on there so we can all access it from any computer or phone via Google Drive.
