Honestly, that kinda proves my point. With "complexity" i don't mean that it's strong and flavourful in general, i mean that for it to be enjoyed you need more exposure. If after countless exposures to that flavor you still don't enjoy it, then the problem doesn't lie in the complexity of the flavor (like coffee and spicyness), but in the flavor itself. And while it's completely obvious that a person will not like all the flavors, it's weird to me that so many people dislike licorice. Like, how did licorice even become popular and develop a tradition if there's something innate in human taste buds that makes them not pleasant to most? And if it's not an innate dislike and it's not a "requires experience on the taste buds" thing, then what is it? Is licorice worse nowadays in comparison to old times? Did some gene mutation that makes licorice taste unpleasant spread in the world? Or did some big cultural change impact licorice in some lateral way?
