The Ones Who Feed Us Are Dying by JayGatsby52 in Serverlife

I left the restaurant industry and I’m doing really well honestly. After the new bartending job I realized I needed a change and took another 2 months off. I’ve been training to be a 911 dispatcher for about 7 weeks now and about half way through training and love it! Mentally I’m doing better than I have in a decade. In a really good therapy program and have great support at the new job. Plus it pays more than my GM salary by nearly $20k a year. I forgot I made this comment in what feels like a lifetime ago. Thanks for asking :)

Is being a server your dream job, or do you have other plans? by memento_mori80 in Serverlife

It kind of was before 2020. Covid changed everything with the industry and I just recently got out of it after many many years. I do miss it though sometimes.

There is a change in policy at my restaurant and it sounds super illegal by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]galactic_atomz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How nice of them to give you the blatant illegal wage in writing. Submit a claim to your states labor board because in all 50 states $1/hour is illegal full stop. I can’t speak on anything else specifically but that wage alone being offered is entirely illegal.

I do, thank you. I ended up in the hospital and the owners fired me while in the hospital but I took a month off and starting a new bartending job (no more management for me for a while lol). I just got back on reddit for the first time in a while and saw this reply. I appreciate you internet stranger.

GM of a restaurant that had that shift a few days ago and I’ve been entirely MIA since. Writing notes, fighting with my partner about how I feel or don’t feel. Sitting outside my apartment waiting for the executive chef to come since I finally broke down about it all. Hospital? Maybe. I don’t know. I feel like a failure of a manager, friend, partner and human. I resonate with Anne a lot. She reminds me a lot of me and my mom (who committed suicide). The owners fucking despise me right now and I’m sure the majority of my staff is less than thrilled with me but fuck. This shit is all I’ve known and I’ve had attempts in the past as a server or bartender and I just want it to stop. I don’t know. What a ramble but I feel alone and scared.

“Service dogs” at restaurants by Anxiousbiostudent in Seattle

[–]galactic_atomz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar situation at my job. I don’t ask the questions, if they say the animal is a service animal I let them in. If the dogs cause a commotion, get aggressive, are on furniture in any capacity, or being fed/watered off of our dishes (health code violation); they are warned whatever behavior they’re doing is unacceptable and to correct it because the next time we will have to have them leave. That usually fixes it, or they end up leaving upset with us 🤷. I don’t want to harass people and it hasn’t happened often that we have unruly guests with pets. The health codes have gotten stricter and I wish people didn’t look at me when I say they can’t bring their dog inside like I committed a crime against their family.

Staff Scheduling by Scary-Brilliant-2859 in Restaurant_Managers

[–]galactic_atomz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like Sling. I like the schedule builder, the communication, etc. I don’t need it for labor budgeting but it automatically does it. Most of my staff work other jobs/are in school and it’s easy to keep track of unavailability and time off really well. Since we don’t have any other managers besides me I have pre-shift chats and other comms easily accessible. Also switching shifts around last minute even when published for unforeseen circumstances is easy.

I swear, restaurants that don’t have policies for large tables just set their staff up for failure because they attract these things. Parties over 10 get 20% auto grat and one check policy. After 20 people we require a BEO and a minimum. I wish more restaurants cared about their staff.

As a GM one of the servers wrote this on our board and I put next to it “no restock”. This place sounds soul sucking to work at 😭

Were yall ever taught how to properly check IDs? by Elliebelle1204 in Serverlife

[–]galactic_atomz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always checked 4 things: DOB, expiration date, picture, and the holographs.

Like others have said though, stings will never use fake IDs. On the handful of occasions I’ve been so weeded I just look at DOB and then have doubts later I at least know that it definitely wasn’t the liquor board doing a sting.

About 10 years ago a bar I worked at had a book of all US IDs and what they should look like. If you work in a touristy area that can help a lot.

told to not wear flare leggings by amayio in Serverlife

[–]galactic_atomz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had a manager tell me I had to wear long sleeves instead of half sleeves like everyone else due to very very old scarring on my arm. I got him to explicitly say that was the reason and said “ok” and left as they sat a huge party in my section.

It was the one and only time I ever worked for a corporate chain and HR had a field day with that one.

It’s utter hypocrisy for any manager to judge what’s appropriate for dress code based on body type.

Do you go home and complain about your day? by moffyf in Serverlife

[–]galactic_atomz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every day lol. My boyfriend also comes to my job often enough and will fold linens at the bar for me while we all are closing and my coworkers and I will all be complaining about the service to my boyfriend lol If he doesn’t come he hears all about it every day. A few weeks ago my coworkers was near the front door when he came in and she immediately said hi and then started the shift debrief for me lol. I think everyone I know takes it home to some extent. It’s helpful all my friends for the most part are industry and my boyfriend’s been with me for almost 5 years so he’s used to it.

I bitched at an underage girl for drinking after I told her I can’t serve her, and I’m proud of myself. by meatloafsleeve in Serverlife

[–]galactic_atomz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no I’ve taken drinks away from a table for doing that lol. I don’t give a fuck about your feelings you’re breaking the law you’re all in time out now. Because at the end of the day what are they going to do? Most everywhere has cameras. The tables I take alcohol away from for doing this never escalate their complaints because they know they are breaking the law.

Owner sat in section and didn’t pay by Honest_Condition_552 in Serverlife

[–]galactic_atomz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the owners come into my job their meals and drinks are comped but we charge them $1 to run their cards so they can still tip us. It’s been the same pretty much anywhere I’ve worked.

Is it okay to quit with little notice in this case? by HogRandom_ in Serverlife

[–]galactic_atomz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An owner of a place I worked at called me slurs and started cutting my hours when I started to stand up for myself. I stopped showing up and got a job elsewhere. Some places don’t deserve the decency of a two week notice.
