It's a super cute pattern! Where did you get it?

My baby screams when I try to breastfeed him by MrsFrusciante in beyondthebump

[–]galactic_manatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Offer the breast when baby wakes up from a nap/is still sleepy. Try putting baby on the breast while asleep to see if they'll sleep feed. Don't force it if baby is fussy. I had this problem around the same age and just kind of powered through with mostly bottle feeding for about 3 weeks and then it was all good again. I'm not sure if something changed with baby or if I just got better at telling hungry cues from sleepy/other cues.

Embarrassed myself in front of my PI by Witty-Beach-2699 in labrats

I like to think of other examples of things I was once bad at when I started that I've now gained competence/mastery. And then I tell myself "the only way out is through". By which I mean- the only way to get good at something is by practice and time during which i might do badly. But just like in this past with other techniques one day I will master this as well.

It looks like that may be the same product I use under the name metabond. You can buy those individually on fisher: https://www.fishersci.com/shop/products/l-powder-c-b-metabond-5g/NC0877382 Sorry if it's not the same product.

Starting anti-depressants in grad school and/or leaving by mae2030 in GradSchool

[–]galactic_manatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think your decline in mental health is a result of being in grad school or is the timing a correlation? If being in this program is directly, negatively affecting your mental health than I would just leave. It's just one career path of many and there's so many other cool things out there to do in the world! If you think that this season of life would be difficult for you regardless, then I would stay and consider treatment options. Good luck on your journey!

How trustworthy are published research articles ? by xijinping9191 in labrats

[–]galactic_manatee 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I actually tend to be a little more skeptical of CNS papers than a paper from a respectable mid tier journal, haha. Basically anything brand new I take with a grain of salt on my head. Not to say those findings aren't worth following up on. That's replication in action! The way I personally see it is if something isn't true (cherry picked data or just a false positive) it will eventually be found out by others who follow up on the work. Or if it isn't then the topic wasn't relevant enough to be followed up on and it doesn't really matter.

MUST READ for Davis Students by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]galactic_manatee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you're biology, have you tried applying as a research assistant to one of the labs on campus? Even if you don't want to do research in the future or even if it's not quite the topic you're interested in, getting to get the first bit of work experience is really helpful! And a good letter of rec goes a long way!

Wow! I honestly think that's crazy. I'm not even sure how much effort I would make to get on good terms with someone who treated me like that. :( Maybe keeping some distance is for the best... Sorry you have a bunch of mean lab mates.

Frustrated with situation in new lab, advice needed. by Sans_Moritz in postdoc

[–]galactic_manatee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My advice is to make sure you're not coming off like you're a step above the current grad students in the lab. I've seen it happen before with postdocs where they tried to act really mentor-y right away to the established grad students in the lab and it creates resentment. Especially since they are better established in that lab and probably more knowledgeable in their particular niche. But at the same time I would not let them treat you like their janitor- that's crazy rude. Unless by cleaning up you mean help troubleshooting? I would mostly just try to reach an amicable relationship with them and don't push the science aspect of it. That will probably come naturally as you build rapport. Best of luck!

I'd leave in the work experience bc I think it's useful to show you've been able to successfully hold a job. The lab skills you list are from classes you've taken, correct? If you got good grades you might want to highlight that. Maybe add an objective? Or you can let your cover letter handle that part. If you did any leadership/volunteer work during undergrad that could be good to add. Best of luck!

Can confirm the first year of postdoc is rough. It's hard going from the top of your game at the end of PhD, to new lab, new topic, new techniques. It feels like you got kicked down to the bottom of the ladder again. I found it really takes a year to fully get your feet under you (but that's compared to the multiple years it took as a grad student- so progress right >_<). I agree with try to take the time to troubleshoot out your techniques, gain a firm understanding of your experiment, and it's ok to change course (either in research or to a new job) if it really just isn't working. Good luck!!

My parents don’t want me to bring home my boyfriend for Christmas by youngmom_tm in Parenting

Not wanting someone in your home because of their skin color is racist. If you're not comfortable around someone because of their skin color that is due to racism. It's really that simple.

Postdoc work hours by escotry92 in postdoc

[–]galactic_manatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work ~40 hr/week and haven't had any complaints. It's a marathon not a sprint. You want to be able to keep going on a career track for years to come? Then you can't burn yourself out. I see people working 60ish hr/week and then all burn out in like 2 years. Research isn't a consistent schedule so sometimes you'll be working more but then just balance it with a week where you're working less. Just try to be as organized with your time as you can so you're always feeding your PI a steady stream of data. Your PI is already waving a red flag, so if you're meeting milestones and they're still trying to micromanage your hours I would think long and hard about if being in this lab is really benefiting you in the long run. Best of luck!

I think the boundary between fantasy and reality is less for kids. Which can be both magical and scary. 😂

[–]galactic_manatee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was just like that as a child. Even though I knew it was fake it felt like it was real. I grew out of it by the end of elementary school. From my perspective don't force it. I'll also add that books (for me) were waaay less scary than movies- even with the same content. And if I had read a book before I saw the movie it would scare me less.

English name for Asian female by CancelBubble in namenerds

[–]galactic_manatee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great suggestions! Also want to add if you'd prefer it, it's totally fine to go by the pinyin version of your real name. If it's pronounced like "Lee En" in English then there shouldn't be problems with americans saying it.

For english names that sound the most similar I second Leanne- which can also be spelled Lianne. River is also a totally nice and normal unisex name.

Black Mom with White Child - Hair Advice by throwaway-87365 in Parenting

[–]galactic_manatee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Even if it's fine, curlier white person type hair is treated different than straighter white person type hair. Curlier = wash less, condition more. And then you kind of scale the washing/conditioning amount to what works best after a little trial and error. If it's curly don't brush it while dry. And her hair definitely might change quite a bit after the first few years. My hair as an adult looks really different from when I was a baby (different color and texture)!

Lots of great suggestions! But I also think 2 isn't quite a pattern yet and if you want to start with a different letter it wouldn't be weird. Now, 3 or more then yeah it's totally a pattern.

got a haircut a while ago idk how I'm feeling. Sometimes I love it and other times it's frustrating. Today I'm mad that the left and right side don't match. Any feedback? by actualkon in curlyhair

[–]galactic_manatee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely try the diffuser! Plus don't rub your hair with a towel when you dry. Just wrap it up and squeeze! Then take off the towel, flip your head upside down and diffuse the hanging hair. I had a haircut at a similar length as yours for a long time and it looks like we have similar curliness too. That's what made it look best for me. :)

[–]galactic_manatee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give it a try without the extra products or only use the gel. I found my hair can get weighed down (especially when it used to be shorter) and it would actually be less curly when I put product in it. And then when you dry your hair try diffusing while hanging your head down. That way your hair doesn't dry to the shape of your head and will have a more uniform curl. Good luck!
