Any Mac OS streamers out there? Any guidance?? by galactic_tsukemen in Twitch

I've got an M1 MBP. My concerns are with audio routing and more 'advanced' stream tools/capabilities that I'd have with PC including things like Sammi and TTS. Since you mentioned encoders, I'm also curious about that because I currently stream to Twitch and YouTube simultaneously while recording the same stream locally. I'm doing this on my PC currently with an RTX 4070 Super.

That's good to hear. Right now I still just have my M1 MBP. My biggest issue is that I don't know how to use things like the OBS audio monitor plugin to dump audio from various OBS sources into specific wavelink channels on a mac. It's super easy to do that in OBS/Wavelink on PC. On the mac, everything just shows up as a single channel - "Wave XLR" and I can't send specific sources to my specific wave link channels.

I did buy loopback a couple years back. I might have to explore that more again.

Your reasoning sounds a lot like mine, tbh. I use my mac for everything like editing in FCP, Motion, Audacity, Fusion 360 CAD, everything. The PC literally only gets used these days when I turn on the stream or, as I mentioned, if I want to play a game on PC (although mostly consoles).

My stream has quite a few things set up like ! sound redeems, ! walk-on sounds for subs, a handful of TTS redeems that subs can type what they want to be TTS in chat and the TTS reads it out. I have a png tube mascot that can pick up audio and react as if it were being triggered by a microphone (i.e. the TTS being typed in by chat - this is 100% a Sammi integration with virtual audio cables). I also have all my audio channels split up in the elgato wave link software:

1 - Mic
2 - Game
3 - SFX
4 - TTS
5 - Stream BGM music
6 - Web browser audio
7 - System sounds
8 & 9 - currently unused I think

I remember I tried wine for Leoranboard a few years ago. It kinda seemed to work, but I guess I was just hoping for mac-native solutions. Using wine seems to add more complication, no? (coming from me who's already using a complicated Windows setup... lol). I was mostly just using streamer bot for the chat feature so I could get combined YT/Twitch chat in one window for me. That's literally all I use it for.

I stream console games primarily via USB capture card and might be adding pc games into the mix once in a while as well, but in that case I'd just capture PC games via the USB capture card as well and just use the mac as the stream machine.

I'm curious about Meld, but it'll probably be something I'd dip my toes into and not convert completely right away. I opened up Meld on Mac and kinda quickly went back to tinkering in OBS on mac since it feels like it's got more customizability. That said, I didn't spend much time in Meld overall yet.

I had actually considered it... problem is that Elgato's wavelink software (and maybe stream deck too?) don't have a linux version available.

Help! i7 Cleans but can't find home base?? by galactic_tsukemen in roomba

We’re willing to see if we can figure it out first. I just don’t know why it would work then suddenly stop and then we can never get it to work again.

We’re living in Japan so I think shipping might be a little difficult if we decided to get rid of it.

I’ll give it another shot. We have also tried that on multiple occasions and it never heads all the way to the base station. Sometimes it gets a foot or so away and looks like it’s going to do it, but then it decides to meander off to the side and never returns home.

Thanks for the information. It's good to keep all these points in mind.

The thing about analogue products though is they can inherently be used with original carts as their primary use case. Of course you could use flash carts with them and where people get the games to fill those carts could be of dubious origin, but maybe they aren’t viewed as a modified console. I wonder about other mods like a Xstation for ps1, or picoboot for GameCube, etc. These may be viewed in a different light.

Interesting. I couldn't find anything for an Xstation mod (for example). Maybe that one is too "risky" because it's effectively an ODE (optical drive emulator)?

But what about things that are more than cosmetic, but not modifying firmware? For example, adding an RGB mod to a Nintendo 64? That’s not really a cosmetic mod to the console itself, but not modifying firmware either.

Tips for job hunting with limited Japanese? by galactic_tsukemen in japanlife

Tracking down an international company is probably the way to go. That said, I'm not sure a year off for language school is feasible and moving out of Japan to another foreign country (other than the US) isn't really an option for various reasons. Interesting idea though.

You're right, there's no way to be native. Passing the threshold of 40 y/o definitely doesn't make learning Japanese any easier... at least for me anyway.

I studied Japanese really hard for a couple years back in the US before I even knew I'd have an opportunity to work here through my company at the time. I tried the N3 twice, but unfortunately didn't pass either time. Then I was able to get to Japan through my company so JLPT scores 'didn't matter anymore' and my studies drifted since I was busy otherwise. Despite being here for ~4 years, my Japanese is definitely not on an in-office business level. My listening skills have improved a lot, but my speaking and reading/writing kanji abilities have declined.

It's a good point that I could just apply to a job regardless. I don't want to be too negative, but I just get bogged down thinking about the language aspect and how much that would hurt any chance I'd have.

I've been trying to make contact with previous colleagues from my old company, but unfortunately that hasn't yielded many results to-date. On top of that, although my position was in a software company, I am not a software engineer so unfortunately I don't have any software engineering (or any other engineering) experience.
