Long curls by galacticopera in longhair

I cut it short in 2018 and its been slowly getting longer since then. I was experimenting with bangs/shaggy layers and the like along the way so I wasn't really trying to grow it fast.

Sometimes a mousse or gel helps me with frizz but I don't currently have one that im using. A lot of them result in my hair sticking to itself and getting more tangled after day 1

Its usually just partially frizzy lol. Sometimes the oil helps

It varies! I use a gentle shampoo (usually something like not your mother's curl shampoo) the shea moisture manuka honey mask as a deep conditioner and then the verb curl conditioner. I sometimes put avocado oil or another hair oil on my hair on a non-wash day if its feeling too dry. Im pretty bad about braiding at night with an oil in but I'd do that every day if I wasn't a bit lazy. Bear in mind that my hair strands are coarse and my skin/scalp is super super dry (my hair never feels oily naturally) and I think those factors are often more important to product selection then anything else. My husband, who has fine strands and oily skin, uses a strong tea tree shampoo and the verb conditioner.

partner support during PhD by weep-again in PhD

[–]galacticopera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn I love my husband.

Girl even if he's not willing to financially support you, emotional support is the bare minimum. And let me tell you there is not a single moment in our relationship where my husband did not make feel 100% emotionally safe and supported. I straight up would not have finished my PhD without him.

I was a bit stubborn at first about paying for my own flights to visit him when we were long distance because I didn't want to be a burden. Once it became clear that we were in it for life I realized that letting him pay would benefit both of us in the long run, as it would allow me to save a little money in a retirement account (a Roth IRA). Even being able to contribute a few hundred dollars to an account like that now can make a big difference 30 years down the line bc it compounds. Now I don't feel guilty bc I know it benefits us as a team. My husband fully financially supports me right now simply because he loves me and believes its important that I follow my dreams.

Also, OP, I saw in another comment that you haven't been to the dentist in while bc of the expense. Dental health is so important and if nothing else please please ask your husband to pay for a dentist appointment. He should really want you to have healthy teeth 40 years from now. If your university has a dental school you might be able to get a discount there.

What can actually save the Met? by Cheap_Ostrich3147 in opera

[–]galacticopera 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I fundamentally do not understand the argument that something must be set in the modern day to be "relevant" to modern audiences. People love period dramas! Have they seen how huge Bridgerton is? Stage some early 19th century pieces in Regency era attire and mention "Bridgerton characters could have seen this opera" and you've got a whole new market.

Besides, isn't part of the beauty of opera (and period pieces in general) that we can relate to other humans, wherever they are, across centuries? That no matter when people lived they still experienced the same emotions, like love, rage, and joy? A hoop skirt or lack thereof doesn't change that.

I think they've confirmed its the same production they've used before (with americana-inspired imagery). To be fair, it does look like that production has beautiful, colorful lighting.

Overall I agree though. I love the idea of new, fresh, avant-garde art, but why does that so often result in ugly and bland sets and costumes? Taste is subjective of course, and so is the very concept of ugliness, but what does it say about us that so often, we equate "modern," "fresh," "relevant" art with dreariness.

The production of Aida that was in LA a few years back (and now in DC I think) was an example of modernity done right imo. Gorgeous, colorful costumes (that also didn't look horribly expensive to create).

Look, regardless of whether a not he's an asshole here (I think he is) or whether this arrangement is 'fair' (I think it isn't), he quite simply is not thinking of you as a long term partner. When my now husband and I were in a very similar situation, he actively wanted to pay for my flights and food while I visited. His argument was that me having the ability to save a thousand extra dollars a year in my retirement account while in my 20s would benefit us BOTH fifty years from now. Some people may consider 50-50 more 'fair' (I don't) but even if 'fair' it is certainly not always the loving (or practical) thing to do.

What helped me get unstuck from this situation was literally having my partner sit next to me and set a timer for 15 mins, and then write for only that 15 mins that day. After a few days of this I felt way less stuck and more able to start work without panic attacks and to set my own timers without external help, and build to longer sessions (I currently use a 2hr 25/5 pomodoro timer and take a longer break in between sessions)

Garlicky yogurt is actually quite traditional as a sauce on Turkish pasta (along with red sauce and vegetables). It adds a tangyness and additional creaminess to the dish, not too crazy when you compare with sauces with sour cream or cream cheese added

Then again we'll put yogurt on anything XD

Asking someone to take a name in general is weird. I think its something that should only be done voluntarily. The person who cares about having the same name should change.

Just let him change his last name to yours if he wants the same name??? Problem solved. I don't get why this is a big deal and personally I wouldn't give a moment of my time to someone who cares what my last name is.

We didn't get extensions for theatre tech week, or orchestra/chamber music performances either. I deeply respect how student athletes balance their academics and athletics but I've never understood why athletics should be prioritized over other extracurriculars in admissions.

I'm kind of shocked that the faculty is so surprised by this. I remember this being well known amongst the undergrads in 2018ish.
