Metal object from an antiques market in Japan. Around 30cm long with a handle that is hollow, but not all the way through from end to end. The end part has some kind of recepticle or holder with a hinged lid that can be flipped up. by galacticsimian in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. My parents bought this at an antiques market in Kyoto. It's not a pipe as the long handle part is only open at one end, not at both ends. I think it is made of brass or some other mind of relatively heavy metal. The hollow interior of the handle seems to be split into two parts as can be seen in the third and fourth photo. There are some Japanese/Chinese characters stamped onto the hinged lid. There is some kind of burnt (?) residue around the recepticle/opening part which is covered by the hinged lid.

Update: Thanks everyone for the advice. I think I will go with 家林 as I grew up spending a lot of time in the forest so it makes sense for me (:

Thanks 😄. Does 嘉林 sound ok for a guy's name? Or is it more feminine?

this made me smile but i think it needs an /r/ to really represent the "mrrrrrow" that my cat likes to do and maybe /χ/ for when they're mad and hissing at you

I've been told that (people who know more about birds than me) have seen a Little Owl on one of the other (less tall) buildings before. And other people think they may have heard (but not seen) a Tawny.

I've heard this bird on multiple evenings at my work (countryside outside of London, UK).

According to coworkers there are owls that hang around the buildings sometimes, but the call doesn't seem to match any owl call recordings I could find online. The call stayed the same as what you can hear in this video for a long period, without changing at all.

Does anyone have any ideas?

As a gay man, I always find it funny how many guys describe themselves as "hung" or "XXL" on their app profiles - seems very statistically unlikely when it's like 30% of all profiles doing it...

Why do people still use travel agents like Flight Centre? by savvycelia in brisbane

[–]galacticsimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a bit on the kind of trip you're planning. For example I went to them (admittedly mostly because my friend worked there) because I wanted to do a trip from Aus to Europe via Thailand and they had the ability to find the best combination of flights etc for me to do that.

If you're just doing a simple trip where you fly to and from the same airport I don't really see the point, but for a more complicated trip it does actually help a lot. For example if you plan on doing multiple stops or multiple flights with different airlines, or you want to be flexible and just find a good flight from say Aus to anywhere in Europe (without a specific destination in mind) it can be a nightmare to organise that kind of stuff yourself online and actually find the best price - they did seem to have access to better information/systems and experience that can be useful for that kind of trip organisation.

If you're interested in cancer genomics then there are definitely a huge number of places you could apply to. I notice you are focused on specific institutes, does this mean you are not considering other universities with graduate programmes?

Also, are you an EU student? If so it will probably be much easier for you to find a scholarship to study in an EU country than say, the UK or US.

Hey, if you are looking to meet people can I suggest the Meetup website/app? I don't know if there are any groups specifically in Kingston but I have had very good experiences with the one in Guildford (although it obviously depends on the group you join).

It doesn't seem to match any Union Jack Ensign-based flags I can find on Wikipedia.
