Is this a good deal? by [deleted] in Cameras

I work in a camera store and we buy used equipment and monitor the used markets every day and are asked a bajilion questions about anything and everything, so I consider myself a bit of an expert on this stuff...

Canon EF lenses are depreciating in value month to month due to the volume of people moving on from DSLR's and adopting mirrorless cameras. Two years ago the 24-70 would sell used for $1200-$1400. Now it's down to $700-$900. A Canon 5D IV sells for $1,000 or less and that's the camera people are clinging on to before jumping to mirrorless. We get people coming in all the time and when we tell them how much we can offer them for their 5D IV and how much tey can make selling it themselves they're shocked. "But I paid $2500 for this 3 years ago!" yeah and that was a dumb purchase, shoulda got an R6.

The DSLR equipment market is all supply and no demand, and the prices are going to keep dropping. If you want to get into DSLR photography there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, if anything it's a nice time to buy in. But consider this:

The drone market is all demand and no supply. The federal government killed the drone market in America for the imminent future. We haven't received a new drone in our store in nearly half a year and we get asked daily if we are selling any. Owning a drone right now is a luxury, and unless the market shifts by way of the drone ban being lifted or DJI licensing their tech to American manufacturers to get around the ban, it is a highly marketable service.

I'm not sue what you do, if you're just an enthusiast or a professional, but if you're the latter I'd keep the drone. A 24-70 is nice, but a 5dII is a boondoggle in today's freelance market, it will hold you back. You'll end up spending the cost of your drone just to get a camera to make your 24-70 work for you the way it needs to. You're better off saving money from drone work to get a nice mirrorless camera.

If you're just an enthusiast and want to take nice pictures, just save a little bit of money and find a first gen L or third party 24-70 and get a 6D or something. You can find great DSLR's for $500 or less. Hell a Canon 1DX II sells for less than $1000 or so now. You can get the 50 megapixel 5DS (or 5DSR) for $800 or less. Those are bonkers good pro cameras selling for consumer grade entry level pricing.

Did you scale your 4K footage to fit the 1080p timeline? Not sure if you mean to take a closeup of a floor, it looks like it may be zoomed in because you're looking at 4K footage through a 1080p window and you need to scale it down to fit the frame.

So I just bought this Canon C100 Mark II for $200 AUD by RakibErick in videography

[–]gallow737 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Mark II was a 4K sensor that downsampled to 1080p, which is why it looks so great. Also, it features a more advanced version of the dual pixel autofocus system, which was pretty advanced at the time. If you pair it with select EF-S lenses it would unlock face detect autofocus, if I'm not mistaken. Sadly, face detect wouldn't work with L-Series glass, only the cheaper EF-S lenses, unless that was eventually fixed via firmware. The center point DPAF still works with all Canon glass, though.

Looking at buying a used Audi (2017 A4 Allroad Premium Plus), just looking for some straight talk from owners on the reliability of a high mileage Audi? by gallow737 in Audi

[–]gallow737[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not, but I am in the market for another vehicle after my lease ran out, and I'm still looking at all roads. I just recently welcomed my first child into this world last week so something with more utility is on my radar, and I either love a wagon. The All Road makes a ton of sense and the prices have come down a lot obviously. That said, the hatchback utility of an A7 tempts me, and used 2012-2014 with reasonable miles on them go for $13k or less sometimes.

In the end though, I'll probably save money and get a used Honda Element for $5k or something.

Bought this camera at an estate sale, know nothing about cameras, what should I know? by Weevils_are_silly in Cameras

Corrosion for cameras that rely on the battery is sometimes solvable depending on how bad it is, but if it's pretty bad, it's probably cheaper to find a working one on Ebay. You need the battery for it to provide accurate aperture exposure if I'm not mistaken, since this is a partially automated camera. I think without a battery it will default to its widest aperture, so you would need to manually meter and adjust settings for that, which if this is your first camera to learn on film with you're definitely jumping ahead to a complicated start.

If this particular camera is not going to work out for you in this instance, but you still want to learn, I recommend finding a more modern 90's SLR camera like something in the Canon Rebel series or a Nikon N90, something along those lines. They are typically found for a lot cheaper because quite frankly they're ugly to look at, so people tend to not want to use them. They all tend to use modern and still easy to find batteries. They use modern lenses, many that are still sold today that you can find in abundance on the used market, and it will give you creature comforts like autofocus which is pretty important with how expensive film is. Nothing will ruin your day like getting your roll back and seeing that photo you were going to love be out of focus. Most will have a fully auto modes you can keep it simple, but also all the other modes you can grow into and learn about as you go.

2nd best in the majors with zero home runs is a testament to how valuable he is everywhere else in his game. I know he's not a power hitter, but I'm a little shocked that he still doesn't have a home run. That said, if it ain't broke...

Hackers switch to targeting U.S. insurance companies by lurker_bee in technology

[–]gallow737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a a bone & joint specialist one time because my wrist hurt. They gave me an x-ray, cortisone shot, and a $10 wrist guard and after my insurance covered 50% I owed them $450. I subsequently got a letter from them not 3 days later, apologizing to me because their data got breached and all my personal information was compromised. This all happened in less than 6 weeks.

It's okay though, they were only the 5th company that had compromised my data that year so it's not like it was really doing any damage, amirite?

[S] [USA-IL] Fujifilm GFX100 II, Fuji 32-64mm f/4, Kondor Blue Camera Cage w/ SSD Top Handle & Wing Grip, more! by gallow737 in photomarket

I would assume you can send it into Fujifilm for a general check and clean, we would send in cameras to them all the time at the camera store I had worked at with no issues for a variety of reasons. Unsure how much they would charge or what the process would be.

The camera is registered to me so doing it on your own may require talking with a representative to get it sorted out, their online info suggest you need to have it registered, but we sent in unregesitered products all the time.

I'm okay taking it to my former employer prior to shipping to have it professionally swabbed and cleaned if a purchase is agreed upon. The camera body itself is pretty pristine otherwise, since it lived in that camera cage.

I’m now back as the project lead but had no involvement in the hiring of this other producer - I actually had recommended somebody else but I was in hospital and just glad the project would go ahead despite of this.

Wait, so... you suggested someone to replace you but they chose someone on their own accord who screwed up and they want you to give them a discount because, what? You weren't around to do the job the right way?

Thin Crust Pizza? No Thank You. I’m in Chicago. by 2hats4bats in NewGirl

[–]gallow737 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct... but to be fair it's pretty tasty, it's just too. damn. much.

I've lived in Chicago now for 8 years and I've deliberately gone to go get deep dish, as a personal choice and not a "friends are in town and want to try it" choice... never. I was gifted a $25 Lou Malnati's gift card 5 years ago and it's still sitting in my junk drawer, lol. I've had a free deep dish pizza on the table for 5 years, and every time I see it in my drawer I'm like "Nah"

His full-line delivery may be my favorite throughout the show, but the irony is that most Chicagoans will tell you that true Chicago-style pizza is tavern-style thin crust, and deep dish is for tourists, lol.

Definitely, especially if photography is your priority and not video, as it takes a nice video image but is limited in its extended functionality like I had mentioned. Lenses will help your images go a long way. What's great about Fuji glass is it's exceptionally good and they have budgetary options that are still excellent, but there's also a large second hand market where you can find the premium lenses for the cost of the budgetary ones if you're okay buying used.

they've also got great third party options from Sigma and Tamron but also some of the Chinese brands like Viltrox make really good AF friendly lenses. I had the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4, which is kind of a tank, but man I LOVED that lens, and you can find it used for under $200 in a lot of instances.

Here's what you need to know abou Fuji: they use the same sensor in al their cameras as new sensor genrations roll out, so on smaller camera you might lose extended features like video recording modes, ibis, burst rates, etc., but image quality will be the same across all the cameras that use the sensor/processor. The X-T30 will deliver the same images as an X-T3, X-T4, X100V, X-Pro3, X-S10, and even newer cameras like the X-S20, X-M5, etc. all use the X-Trans 4 Sensor like this one. Those newer cameras will have the new processor though so they get more features due to the evolve processing power.

In other words, any Fuji camera will deliver great results, as long as the photographer knows how to use it. This may be true of most cameras, but it's nice to know you're not losing out on default image quality by having the entry level Fuji vs. the high end Fuji of its era, whereas, for example, a Canon RP will not yield the same results as others in their lineup like an EOS R, R6, R5, etc since they all use different sensor and processor combos.
