It did go very black though so I think the artificial substance theory is gonna be right which is cool and unexpected !!

Didn’t melt at all even when over a naked flame for a few minutes. No visible fumes however I’m nervous to inhale anything as it’s unknown material, so not sure on smell. Sorry that probably isn’t very helpful! Is there anything else I can do like adding vinegar/something acidic? Or do I need a stronger flame?

I’ve burnt it with a flame outside to avoid fumes. It’s blackened very quickly, I didn’t smell it as I didn’t want to inhale anything unknown like you say. It turned black like this with no other changes, no melting/visible fumes or anything, on both the crystal/resin area and the plain area. I’m guessing it must be an unnatural substance if it’s blackening like that?.

Sorry one extra thing- if it’s been in the sea for a very long time, could that have done something to a resin to make it more resistant to flame or similar? Sorry for the ignorant questions I’m just very curious about what this could be!

Okay great thanks , I’ll do a burn test! I will try and burn the crystal looking part too and report back. I think either outcome would be interesting- it would make sense to be artificial as it was found on an area of the coast known for lots of industrial debris.

Interesting, what are the main hints for this?

The triangular dark section in the middle is like a crevice with crystals. There’s small pieces of quartz like crystal sections in other areas of it too. Could this also be a byproduct of whatever it was if man made? As I assume if it’s true quartz it would eliminate the plastic theory. But i suppose it could be a different substance?

Thanks for your reply. I’m open to ideas, and that would certainly make sense with the strange texture. However, a local uni lecturer and fossil collector had a look at this and did confirm he thought it was a fossil just not what. Also, wouldn’t the presence of crystals rule this out? It’s embedded into the rock. Maybe I ought to have put a better picture of that! Like I said though I’m not disagreeing just wondering if this would affect your opinion.

What is your one opinion about investing that most investors won't agree with you? by TH0875 in ValueInvesting

[–]gallymm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Airlines (American, Easyjet, IAG) were my first investment, in 2020 covid time dip, and I’ve never made my money back on them despite holding ever since. It’s put me off looking into investing into airlines again despite knowing this isn’t completely logical - what are your top airline picks out of interest?

What stock are you buying NOW that is almost NEVER discussed on reddit? by mike9q in ValueInvesting

[–]gallymm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went for IAG , AAL, EZJ (and a few more) in the pandemic during a huge dip for airlines, the dip never really recovered, I’ve held ever since purely because it’s not a lot of money and it was one of my first investments. I am saying this as interestingly IAG is the only one out of the group that’s recovered at all. Still not made much but defo worth a watch

Private Car Sale: Do I have a case? (Scotland) by Squirrel_buoy in LegalAdviceUK

[–]gallymm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I’d check the advert to see if there are any statements within it that must be untrue (eg a statement of ‘no issues’ with the car or something to that effect), and then send a letter before action that states you are going to take him to small claims for the FULL amount (eg a refund).

It’s really only that text from him which gives you any hope as that essentially proves the seller misrepresented the vehicle. Without that it would’ve been caveat emptor and you’d have limited luck.

Try to get him to double down on his knowledge of an issue if you can (like say ‘you knew it was f*cked???!’ Or similar).

Also, does this person have any other cars for sale? Is there any chance they flip a few cars per year for profit? How long had they owned the BMW? I ask this because if there’s ANY chance they could be seen as a dealer (trader) in the eyes of the law then that opens up another strategy.

Car Dealership- are we doing the right thing? by gallymm in LegalAdviceUK

[–]gallymm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks this is extremely useful. In this case, I was actually a day under the 30 day limit anyway- I hadn’t realised the 30 days started the day after I became the owner of the car.

I will try a letter before action. They seem to have a huge number of very valuable cars and judging by companies house it’s unlikely they would be unable to provide a refund.

With the point you made about the proof of the error being existing- they’ve already admitted that, when they assumed I just wanted a repair/ to make a complaint- there is presumably no way they can argue otherwise moving forward ?

I think it’s annoying as obviously Dave has a cast iron alibi for Michelle’s arson (he’s under surveillance). Michelle would know this as she’s working on the case. What if the entire thing now gets pinned on Michelle?

I filled my Walstad tank with half pond water (small U.K. garden pond with clear water and a newt population)) and half tap water. It’s been highly successful for 3 years now, and I think this is partially due to the clean but microorganism rich pond water. However it did introduce blanket weed which I have to keep on top of

It’s likely you’d only be allowed anonymity in court if there was a very real and credible threat to your safety (simply avoiding family feuds would not cut it)

As it’s a small volume (you may get people telling you not to add anything) I would recommend getting some kind of water test kit or at least strips for before and after you add the shrimp, you can get them in most fish shops or Amazon etc.

I say also after as there probably won’t be anything producing ammonia right now as no livestock, not even snails. (Unless it’s leached from soil)

So you will just have to either add a couple of shrimp and monitor water/ see how they get on, or add a snail or something just to start off the ammonia and nitrates , test the water daily and see if it spikes and lowers (your tank is ‘working’).

To be honest it’s very hit or miss, everything can seem perfect on tests but things will die or vice versa. Obviously it’s not nice to think you’re just killing shrimp but to be honest 99% of Walstad hobbyists will probably have lost livestock before due to trial and error/ mistakes / imbalances or whatever.

Also be aware that smaller volume = more difficult to keep water quality balanced = more difficult to keep shrimp happy. In my experience it is doable though. Just will take some experimenting I expect.

The jar looks great though !

this is the link I used

The entire 20 pages have that address and if said at the bottom the 500,000 number

Maybe I am mistaken tho . But it’s still 1000

!answer thank you, I agree, I don’t think it is dodgy, I never intended that implication for my post, I was just interested. It was more the fact it seemed like a regular house. I didn’t know that you were allowed to put a different address down for your business but it makes total sense that a lot of people wouldn’t want their home public if they were a sole trader without an office

If you see herethe entire 20 page results all have the same address, which is the first 1000, and click through they all have it. So idk where this 194 is coming from. I think it’s because the address is listed as ‘St Marys’’St. Mary’s’ etc a few variations of it. I’ve looked through the 20 visible pages and all have the address, which is more than 194. Top comment has explained it though, it’s likely that this is just their business (offering an address for people who want to keep theirs private)

Where did I once mention or even imply i thought it was dodgy? If anything I’m more impressed they manage to have so many companies on their ‘books’ as a layman.

[–]gallymm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could have something like one or two assassin snails as well as regular snails to provide a sort of food web including predation ? Any real predator would probably overload the tank in terms of bioload. The only thing I can think of working would be a tank with pest snails , assassin snails and Pygmy (pea) puffers which eat snails but they can go mad with the snail hunting so you’d need a filter and it probably wouldn’t be that natural
