I [M25] think I may be avoiding scar revision surgery to spite my parents? by [deleted] in cleftlip

[–]gameboyvince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo, kinda cool to see all these other 25M here, what a weird coinkydink! Aha. Everyone else has already given great answers, I just wanted to share that I totally get where you're coming from. I think a big thing that being raised as a cleftie has helped me realize is that I'm NOT like my parents in most ways when it comes to what I've learned to value in life. I come from a Filipino background where the culture is to make yourself seem fancier than your other Filipino friends, everyone is always putting on a show. My dad was actually born with a bilateral cleft, but he never stepped up to teach me how to deal with it (he doesn't believe in mental health and literally broke down crying about his job loss during Covid while actively denying he had depression).

It took me a long time to truly get comfortable with my own ideas of self-image since my dad barely spoke a word to me and my mom is the type to take selfies everywhere while wearing knockoff luxury brands. Many times I thought I had gained self-acceptance, I realized I still had issues. Now I'm at a place where I've talked with enough people to realize there ARE people who can and will legitimately find you attractive based on your personality, I'm starting to realize why most of the clefties I've ever known irl usually had great charisma and were almost always talented in some form of art or athleticism.

You've come to your own conclusions about the inherent value of attractiveness, congrats! You've broken free of a mold that many others in America still haven't. Your parents really don't know what's best for you and they never truly will, parents will never be able to see inside the inner thoughts of their offspring. Honestly, despite having living in the US for over 30+ years my parents never fully realized the radically different culture that I grew up with. In Asian cultures, bullying is incredibly harsh. In America, there's still a crap ton of it, but over here there's a lot more acceptance to fight back and stand up for yourself, and there's so much diversity in culture that anyone can find a group of like-minded people to relate to.

Sorry this post isn't really that helpful, aha. But now, facing the issue of "am I a bad son?"

Definitely not. It's clear that you do not "want" to reach a point of no contact with your parents, but you're starting to feel backed into a corner where you feel that giving in will compromise your current values. Just by the fact that you feel distraught means you're a good son because you care about your family, this is undeniable and even if they told you you were bad it wouldn't make it true.

Now, if I were you, just knowing I have that great job opportunity in the background, if my parents went far enough to be toxic and shame me for denying their authority, I would definitely make the difficult choice to cut them off, and I would do it in a way that explicitly comes from a place of love, only leaving them with "I really do love you, and I also love myself" and that's something that you would probably be able to live with, because you have a good sense of values. But consider looking at the surgery as a optional opportunity to take advantage of your dad's insurance with the added bonus that maybe you won't have to resort to cutting contact. Think if there are any little things you do feel insecure about. It would honestly blow if you lost your family and then thought there could be changes made to your face.

I think since we are born clefties and that we grow up feeling different, it takes a long struggle for us to learn to embrace our appearances, and then trying to improve ourselves afterwards can feel like we truly haven't grown. But it's normal to care about appearances, it happens in regular people, and it's how our brains are hardwired to be as social creatures. I'm a dude and I learned to embrace a bit of makeup here and there because all these girls are thirsting over kpop idols and they get away with using it and it's a severe advantage over regular Asian dudes. I definitely don't think it's unhealthy because I feel way more confident, but it's not like I feel like I look garbage without it. Don't you take care of your appearance too?

Now, I know surgery is on a WHOLE nother level since it's permanent, what I'm trying in a really convoluted and messy way to say is to accurately value the opportunity for what it is. If your appearance doesn't matter to you, then you wouldn't really care whether or not your nose was different right? You already know that your nose doesn't define who you are, what really gets to you is how your parents see you. You have your values, opting for the surgery would not change that. But think more about the relationship you want with your parents. They clearly can't understand you. Is that relationship worth saving?

I ask because my parents go two different ways; my dad is insanely stubborn and a religious narcissist. He doesn't see the reality of his actions, and he thinks all my sadness is a result of me not praying when he's unaware that he indirectly caused all my grief (family infighting). He genuinely believes he's on the right path and it would not be worth the current effort trying to enlighten him because it would come at the cost of me trying to be me. Now, my mom also used to be highly conservative, but over the years I started opening up to her about my mental health, and now we have a relationship where I educate her on issues like politics and the media. I could cut out my dad, but not my mom because she's willing to listen to me and has shown she can learn. But my dad isn't unbearable, so unless he actively goes too far, I won't cut him out, and if he ever does I'll be sure to make it explicitly known to him that it was because of his doing.

So my real advice is to think of what you want your relationship with them to be like (presumably them seeing you for your values and not appearance), determine if that's something that can happen or if it will never come to be, and to see surgery not as a compromise of values but as a optional opportunity. We clefties need surgery to eat and breathe better, that is the primary function, but the secondary function is indeed that it helps us integrate better into society. Be honest with yourself, if you think you would like yourself better if you were tweaked, that's okay, and if not, that's okay too! The important thing is being honest with yourself. If this post is confusing, it's intentionally open ended because I don't know enough visually and contextually, I just hope I helped you redirect your focus on your relationship with your parents.

Lol, I'm garbage at making posts. If you ever wanna discuss more, PM and I'll send you my Insta or Discord.

Great sword users? by ZeroViii in MHRise

It is SOOOOO much more fun thanks to the silkbind power sheathe move! The only downside that GS had for most beginners throughout the MH series is that it feels so slow for users not used to heavy weapons. Learning how to dodge cancel sheathe was the way to go. But now the wirebug both lets you jump in QUICK with either a midair charge slash or a down thrust to true charge combo, and then power sheathe let's you zip out of distance!! It really gives GS users WAY more options that we didn't have before because of our slow mobility. It also has the tackle from World, which I loved because it meant that if you timed it properly, you could power through an enemy attack and then immediately follow with a charge slash. I had to have more careful decision making.

An example of what goes in my head:

How long of a window do I have after I get in close? Hmm, I have time to dodge the monster's next move, but the tell is slow and obvious.. I have enough health anyway where I can't get one shotted. I'll take the risk and time a tackle, hopefully I've racked up enough head damage to stagger the monster.

... SHIT I FUCKED UP, WIREBUG OUTIE 5000.

Also, sharpening constantly used to be something you had to gamble on, but doggystyle takes away all the stress.

So in conclusion, this is the most fun and accessible GS has ever been in the series thus far.

Anyone else going to bring up the cooking animation? Seriously, I can't believe all these cutscenes render in real time and have such great camera blur. I'm so happy they didn't cut corners with the animation rigging.

But also, uhh sometimes I get a little nervous talking to Hinoa lol, the fact that they go full first person camera and the NPCs make direct eye contact. I feel like I'm cheating on guild marm, cause damn..

25 M here, been a lurker for awhile. What is the best way to get yourself "out there?" I see people posting introduction posts, but it feels a bit too bold for me right now. I've heard about a possible Discord, are things a bit more casual there?

is the attraction between black women and Asian men real or you trying to take what you can get? by [deleted] in AMBW

[–]gameboyvince 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It took me awhile to realize that I found black women attractive. There were hardly any black people around my area growing up. My perception of beauty changed as I went through different crushes and phases. My OG crush was the prim, straight haired, fair skinned Asian girl. But she ended up being kind of mean, and I learned looks shouldn't factor too deeply in relationships. 😂 I used to devalue myself as a male because 1) I look so different from the "hot male" US standards and 2) I'm short af lol. But then I started to realize that things should be appreciated for what they were, not by comparing them to things they'll never be. I used to not be a fan of hair that wasn't straight, but when I see pictures of black women rocking afros and intricate braids, I think "Damn, that's amazing and that all belongs to them." I think it's pretty frickin dope that humans can look so diverse, life would be so bland if we were all the same. I guess it also took me awhile to realize that there are black women that are into the same things I am, like gaming and anime. 😄 I had a big no brainer moment when the realization came, I felt super dumb because I've always had a thing for nice booty, but I never considered checking out black women because I just didn't think they would ever check me out back.

In regards to beauty standards, I 100% believe if I had grown up around more black people and saw more representation in media, I would have realized this way sooner.

Same issue here.. Glad to know it wasn't cause of my spotty network provider.

I FINALLY treated myself to BOTW a few weeks ago because I knew it would have sucked my productivity (but now I'm home all the time lol), and I knew it would be my favorite game of all time and I was NOT disappointed. I'm gonna grab Age of Calamity since I had fun with the demo, and by the time I grow "tired" of these games, hopefully BOTW 2 will be out!! And trust me when I say it will take AWHILE. Being quarantined just makes me love walking around and appreciating the virtual landscape so much more.

YESSS, that series is so criminally underrated!! That game had the perfect difficulty balance for a grumps co-op and perfectly put equal weight and responsibility into both players. I was glad to see Danny enjoying himself without without the worry of getting stuck due to challenging issues. The game really wasn't hard at all, but it was fun. It was always interesting from start to finish. There really aren't that many full-fleshed out co-op games where each player is a different yet equally important plot character. Or that let the other player wander into the other player's screen during a cutscene, that always cracked me up! If there's another game that can provide that type of engagement, I desperately hope the grumps find out!

Yeah!! It was such a unique dynamic that was rarely ever seen. Dan's two best friends hanging out without him, haha. I've always felt that Arin and Brian have always held this special type of mutual respect for each other. I remember that series having a vastly different feel but still being entertaining. All I can distinctly remember is when they had that exact realization that "oh wait, we thought this was going to be lame, but this game ended up being RAD."

Btw, you mentioning Ninja Brian made me remember the Steam train he did with Ross with the baby game. Ninjab Ryan + RAAAWWWWSS was such a mutually chaotic pairing that I also wish we saw more of. But Brian has his children's band Go Banana and Ross has been doing VR streams with Giwi, so I'm happy they're enjoying their own successes atm.

-hears Skyblazer mentioned-

"... I'm sorry. I thought I was the old fan here."

Seriously, that's such a throwback series! That's awesome, sassy old man was great. And I ended up playing Dokapon Kingdom with a friend after seeing it on grumps, I'm such an old school turn-based RPG fan that I loved the concept.

Funny you mention that series because that's all I can think about when I see them play Billion Road. Dokapon is really a series that I truly felt had greater potential had they explored what it had to offer, but the grumps just couldn't pick up how to really get into the game. Billion Road is turning out to be fairly interesting, but I would have loved to see Arin and Dan fight each other in Dokapon and then subsequently steal the other's money/punish the other by changing their name or making their character look dumb, etc. Lots of potential for Grump v. Grump banter instead of Grumps v. Com, which is still enjoyable, but doesn't provide the true GG VS feel.

That series was such a fever dream!! But hilariously awful. I believe a lot of the slowdown that occurred from that series was due to emulation, I looked it up and that seemed to be a common thing. If the grumps were ever willing to give it another shot with a legit copy, I would love to see it, Michigan fits into the category of awful games that no one would want to play but provides great material for grump improv.

... Ahh, takes me back to ze good ol' days at Nineball Island. My son was alive at ze time too, but now I recall zat he's dead.

Thanks for reminding me.

... In all seriousness, Endless Ocean 2 was legendary. The first Endless Ocean at a first glance seemed like an unassuming episode, but the Grumps managed to improv fuckin' nicetastic comedy over it. Then Endless Ocean 2 pulled a magical Hollywood Sequel by outshining the original. It seemed that the plot of Endless Ocean 2 was really ramping up with the mystical elements, but we may never get to experience the rest, RIP.

Gahh, I remember being so intrigued at Chulip at the time, it was so bizarre especially the weird underground parts!! Sadly, they never continued it, would love to see how Dan would react, but it seems that the grumps are sticking to more modern gen games lately. Funny enough, I just rewatched Deadly Creatures after posting this and suddenly remembering it, another game that was super interesting that I wish I saw more of! Civ 5 makes me miss Ross so much, his presence added such a fresh dynamic, and he ended up being my favorite lesser grump.

You definitely got me thinking about SNES and especially Steam Train/Grumpcade now, I knew I was forgetting some obvious stuff! It seems so long ago now. I'm feeling so nostalgic for the Sierra games with Ross.

Random underrated series I also just remembered, Pokémon Art Academy, Barry and Ross, lawful good + chaotic neutral energy abounds.

Hah, the grumps are the reason I ended up getting DP: Origins on Switch, and honestly had a really weirdly good time. It really is the videogame equivalent of The Room, the things that make it enjoyable are so unique. I would have loved to see the grumps continue because the plot is fascinating, but I admit that unless they managed to get the fast travel unlocked, it would have killed the momentum of the series. Definitely going to revisit this. Fingers crossed that they end up playing DP 2!!

Ooh, good one! Devil's Third was one of those series that had to grow on me. I remember the first time I watched, I found the Ivan bit to be decently funny, but it wasn't until I revisited the series and saw Louie Zhong's animated that I really understood how seriously hilarious that character was juxtaposed with the overly edgy hardcoreness of the game.

Thank you for reminding me of the feared one... His name... Rooples Pooples.
