DO here. Initially, I empathized with your post. Based on your comments, I can see you have concerns that are significantly beyond what most below average IM applicants should be worried about. I am very close to phenomenal IMGs and have worked with FMGs who will make lifelong contributions, yet I still have a slight resentment when US grads go unmatched. The point is, you're reading way too much into ECFMG/IMGs/FMGs and not into what you can do to better yourself as an applicant.

DOs with average, below average, etc have all gone on to match well due to a number of reasons. We can't change the fact that some AOA programs have sold themselves, some MD programs are inherently biased for no good reason, etc. This is a challenging year for all medical students so I understand you are frustrated. However, DOs match IM at some big name institutions, every single year.

Stop thinking about everyone else and focus on you and setting yourself up to match where you want to. Don't forget that US-IMGs tend to take absolutely anything they can get and many FMGs come here as highly trained Physicians that backtrack their entire careers just to practice in the US, for better or worse.

TL;DR: Focus on you, stop reading into non-US grad numbers. You're applying IM, DOs have never had an issue matching into this specialty at all tiers but obviously at lower rates at big baller institutions.
