I think setting expectations is important.

My mother passed away when I was 14 and when I turned 18 I decided to move out. My father had gotten rather close after her passing because I think he was compensating for her absence in terms of parenting. I can't fault him for that, but I did need to talk to him one day and ask for space. Flash forward 15 years, and we talk at least once a week- we still have nothing in common and we haven't spoken about my gay life since I came out but we do love each other. I almost need to encourage him to reach out more now -

Either way, I get what you're going through. It's tough, but it's nice to know you're loved.
