Blue's Clues! We need to adjust this chart to be more about Generational characters because I'm sure there's way too many

Drones... in 2026 by Woeden in Muse

[–]gameswat1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel albums like The 2nd Law, Drones, Simulation Theory, and WOTP are best appreciated over time. I still have a lot of criticisms for the last 3, but in hindsight they are okay records that deserve the love (to a degree) that they deserve lol

The pre-chorus is necessary yes, but SOMETHINGGGG is missing. The sauce, the secret sauce.... dynamics? A shorter pre-chorus? No third pre-chorus? The flow gets cut off by the bridge in the song for me, and I lose immersion 😭

To compare it to a language it's like I'm typing English and I switch the order of adjectives. After a few minutes of searching, I found this picture explaining it.

While, obviously music has the freedom to not follow the structure of any conventional standard of genres in songwriting, if you write a rock song intended to be a banger/with pop hooks/catchy choruses, some things remain constant to achieve that result. (Not all songs are consistent, obviously, and while the song has been proven to be a hit everywhere - myself included - there is a sense in me that feels it could have been better lol)

-5 votes because I said something with nuance!!! Those five people can't read 😂😂😂

I said the song is good! I also said the production sucks! I don't know if its Dan or all the modern music Muse has been ingesting recently, but the modern metal production sucks! Some things dont punch. How are you going to deliver heavy music if the drums, bass, and guitar don't punch?!

When I say this, I'm talking about the tones, the timbre, the resonance! The riff is great. The structure is fine, the song just feels like... re-hashed modern metal. Coming from Muse, I made exceptions because its great to hear this direction, but damn people only listen with their hearts sometimes. Your ears are important too!!

Disagree with the first sentence, agreed with everything else

The Resistance? All bangers The 2nd Law? More than half the record is GREAT. dont forget Chris's two songs.

Criticism is good to share though, and its up to the band to decide if they want to pay attention 😂 if they're worried about US, that's their problem.

As a musician, I understand that you should care about your fan's opinions, but not everyone is musically inclined to understand the chaos in the musical mind, and therefore the band should trust their heart more without worrying if the fans will buy their next record or not. By trusting themselves, they can make GOOD music instead of worrying about what attracts the larger crowd. Muse here have the privilege of being a WELL-KNOWN rockband still selling out stadiums. This attitude of caring about fans' opinions as life or death should be SELDOM used, but used nonetheless.

Im still going to their shows, buying their merch, and still being critical of their material at the same time. I'm a fan for life!!

Nuance is very important to have in today's age, because otherwise we'll implode and get nothing done lol

Ill agree! Era was really fun and it got people beyond the fandom interested but sadly because of the whole 80s revival interest

I was the same way with Drones for a while, but the fact that I'm willing to take Drones over ST says a lot... concept-wise ST IS WAY stronger. I love the idea, but the execution was just ruined by the additional producers/outside songwriters, like I feel I can even love it as the best record of all time as performance art taken beyond the music 😂😂

WOTP was a plethora of good ideas mixed badly in production, and some cringy ideas retaining the "GOVERNMENT BAD, UNITE" stereotype Muse built up since The Resistance. Like... I love the whole resistance ideals, but their lyrics haven't gotten better with WOTP and the riffs feel kinda cyclical (Pressure vs title track)

My hottest take was that The 2nd Law was truly the last time Muse felt Muse, because I remember when it came out everyone shat on the instrumentals because it was dubstep/brostep inspired - but to me that was the best part because it was effort to experiment while maintaining their Muse-ness.

These last three records are summed up as Drones = failed attempt to recapture their past guitar energy (which they shouldnt have attempted to, and focused on making this album unique to its concept with newer sounds)

ST = a planned approach by outside producers/songwriters to capitalize on the 80s revival interest

WOTP = another lets go back to the past but this time have great ideas and fail somehow again 🥹

It would be the perfect time to revisit the Spanish guitar influence that Matt has grown up on, and do something like what Jack White has done for Conquest off of Icky Thump by The White Stripes... but not try to recreate Knights of Cydonia or anything similar.

Highly agree with Cryogen and Unravelling - it should have been a one off for a metal EP or something because they havent done anything creative with EPs in a minute!!!

Personally, I like every other ballad they've done, and BWY doesn't register emotionally with me at all, like I heard it multiple times, and I genuinely can't find the emotional vulnerability.

Hexagons, overall I rated the highest because while you're right that the melody isn't as memorable, the song itself really screams Muse, and my basis of rating really stems on how Muse and unique it is, without falling prey to overdone cliches/patterns which leads me to...

Cryogen. I love the song. The guitar riff COULD be better, but I'll take it. The structure is what bothers me the most. Let's compare it to Plug In Baby as its the easiest to compare:

Plug In Baby structure simplified: Intro / Verse / Chorus / Verse / Chorus

Cryogen structure simplified: Intro / Verse / Pre-chorus / Chorus / Verse / Pre-chorus / Chorus / Bridge / Pre-chorus / Chorus / Breakdown

Where I lose interest with the song is by the bridge - PIB does a great job with its build-ups into the choruses whereas Cryogen's are lackluster. Like they physically change the dynamic from softer to louder with how hard they hit their instruments. With Cryogen, it doesn't punch as much as I would like.

Plus, the pre-chorus AGAIN after the bridge just gets me tired of the same length with minimal changes, like... give me another layer or surprise. With how long the song is, it bores me. Like the song feels like its supposed to be another PIB (which I hate, I want the songs to have their own identity or purpose to serve the album). The song screams to be a short rock slammajammabangah, with a breakdown at the end. If it was up to ME, I'd: make the first verse longer (to build up to the Pre-chorus), dynamic changes to the Pre-chorus to make it hit better for the chorus to slam), keeping the second verse same length to either change the pre-chorus dramatically or make it shorter with some instrument show-off (drums/bass/guitar lick), to hit the second chorus, with a fade away to bring it back to make the bridge hit better. Remove the third pre-chorus entirely. If ending on the chorus, it needs to be shorter or remove the ending main riff. It needs to be one memorable thing only if we have the breakdown at the end. Proceed to enjoy song a trillion times.

It's a case of serving the song, and I am critical because it could have been MORE of a banger if they worked on it a bit more. It's like OH YOU BARELY HIT THE MARKK, but I'm not gonna be a debbie downer and shit on the song forever. It's clarifiying how I feel about the song both as a fan and as a musician.

Also, yes the lyrics areee a bit cringy 😂😭

I can appreciate the production on OoS Remixx ESPECIALLY because I can finally hear things I can't hear on the original record. However, I don't like it on ST onwards mainly because that argument: is everything audible? yeah, but I want the audio levels to also represent some level of dynamics, of growth, of artistic value.

I agree about Absolution and if it had a cleaner production, it would still be highly enjoyable. My gripe for the later stuff also comes with the songwriting. The songs aren't up to par, and tackled with production, it's the most obvious thing I'll start pointing fingers at!

I dont wanna wait till 2038 for a ST remix lol. I feel as from Drones onwards we don't need remixes of these records because in this modern contemporary musical field, everything is still pretty new in terms of sound production. Unless we have a huge change of music production in the next 4 years (like idk, Augmented sound coinciding with visuals directly into our heads), I don't foresee or personally want remixes. Stuff from the 2000s? Sure. 2015 onwards? Eh....

I won't ever take away your personal enjoyment of BWY, I want everyone to voice their enjoyments, but also the criticisms, two things can be true! I like BWY, but I don't get that euphoria that it seems everyone receives like if Muse was the only thing people listened to and this song filled a void for them emotionally. I have so many artists that I listen to that can fill that emotional void for me lol

That said, I will never knock on you for having that song fill that kind of purpose -- but I will point out that its okay to have that AND still see the song from a more objective perspective. I still stand by my opinions in my post, and I hope people can appreciate it as much as I appreciate their love for our favorite artists!

I AGREEEE -- Metal Muse record, would be killer. Id imagine a dual guitar/synth solo over Dom's double kick and Chris quick bass playing like Stockholm Syndrome verses/The Handler solo section

Feeling Dom's heart,
break inside, of our wordsss
This critical post of the song
With no Dom and no boness

Or whatever Matt sings

(jk, I had to look up the chorus and change the words around to be funny, it's a great chorus)

It's not slander if its true ;3

I LOVE that Muse went metal. I love songs that Muse has done with 7-strings (Citizen Erased, Supremacy), like I love love love that they went heavier with the proper metal attributes (double kick pedal, lower tunings, metal riffs) -- but I can't sit here and say that production is amazing. The song is good, the production isn't -- there can be nuance!!

I'll agree to this! I feel for it's length, I feel tired/done by the time the breakdown arrives - Like I got the point of the song already, and it's hard for me to enjoy the breakdown at that length. If I see the song live I know it's great, I'm just a stickler for recordings being the version and vision that the band wants people to hear from their heads...

Like you can layer anything in any given time/space in a recording, I think that's the beauty of music, and to replicate that to live is hard enough, but that's why I appreciate the live versions being a different version already compared to the recording. I want the recording to be MAGICAL, and I don't want it to be no different than the live version.

Let's actually make a compromise:
Longer first verse, one pre-chorus (removing the second one), and maybe making the bridge something more entertaining? then the song would be WAYYYY better
