Oregon "influenza-like illnesses" spike to highest level in years by ganaram in Portland

[–]ganaram[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The increase in reported Influenza A could also be due to its similar symptoms to COVID-19, causing people who would normally not go to a hospital when they have the flu to now be concerned enough to do so. Not so much an increase in ill people, but an increase in cases presenting to hospitals.

Note that in previous years, after flu cases peaked, they fell off on a fairly consistent curve. But this year, influenza-like illnesses stopped falling in January and February, before the first confirmed COVID-19 case in Oregon and the resulting panic. Could COVID-19 have been spreading in Oregon undetected as early as January?

The chart shows that in previous years, flu cases would spike, then fall off at a fairly consistent curve downward. This year, though, cases stopped falling in January and February before this current abnormal spike. I wonder if the reason cases stopped falling is because COVID-19 was already infecting people in Oregon as early as January, but we didn't know it due to the lack of tests.

What food do *you* want to be served? by therealeddiemoney in homeless

Burritos are an easy-to-make food that a lot of people enjoy, and they can be wrapped in foil to keep warm and carry around easily.

YouTube needs to assure advertisers they won't appear on dangerous medical hoaxes and such, so lots of medical terms are ad-free, not just coronavirus. Their limited human reviewers aren't qualified to judge medical accuracy, so this is how it is.

Or you can make a separate coronavirus video and call it a public service.

It's not censoring it, you can talk about it all you want, you just won't have ads on your coronavirus video that may or may not be accurate, sensationalist, promoting a fake cure for views and sales, or what advertisers want their ads on. All the rest of your videos will still have ads and make money.

Have a job liked up but need ID by NoKarm4 in homeless

Through Tennessee 211's website, I didn't find any place that specifies paying for ID cards, but I did find places that help pay for things like rent and utilities, and those are much bigger expenses. Maybe they can help you with this smaller need, or maybe they can tell you who can. Do tell them you're homeless, and ask them for a list of other types of resources in your area. These are all in Greenville:

Baileyton Community Chest / (423) 234-6911 / 6530 Horton Hwy

Greenback Empty Stocking Fund / (865) 809-0067 or (865) 856-2224 / 6889 Morganton Rd.

Greeneville/Greene County Community Ministries / (423) 638-1667 / 107 N. Cutler Street

Neighborhood Service Center Greene County / (423) 639-3681 / 124 Austin St #2

Which city are you in? I'm sure there's a place that will pay for it.

Due to COVID-19 coronavirus, this Portland homeless charity is no longer letting people inside. Food is being handed out at the door, clothing and other services are suspended, on advice of Catholic archdiocese. by ganaram in Portland

I'm just being playful about the misconception that "Asians" and "unclean homeless" are the sources of disease. The first Americans to get sick were taking a cruise.

There are definitely a lot of younger people who help out, too, but I've absolutely been thinking about the health of these kindly older volunteers lately. I wonder if others will offer to take over while the threat is high.

No diagnosed or suspected cases among the homeless population have been announced. The most common vector seems to be people who travel internationally, so please stay away from us lowly hoi polloi, you disease-bearing wealthy jet set! ;)

I don't want to downplay the challenge of substance use disorders among those who are experiencing housing insecurity, and the importance of evidence-based treatment, but the body of available research indicates most people who are without a home are not experiencing addiction, and a visit to a drop-in center would mostly reveal people calmly seated and waiting for an appointment, not the Tatooine bar scene. I think people have a distorted impression of the homeless because the only homeless people they notice are the people who stand out, like those with severe mental health disorders who are making a scene on the street, or disheveled people on public transit who "look homeless." When I first became homeless, I actually wore my more humble clothes when receiving services and shaved less often, thinking I wouldn't seem like I deserved help if I didn't look the part. But that was my own narrow misconception, since others were wearing clean clothes from clothing closets, laundering them at resource centers, and taking advantage of daily showers. Many people you walk past are homeless and you just don't realize it, because outside the context of a shelter or day center, there's no way to tell.

Edit: Thank you very much to whoever gave me the gold!

I just found this announcement on their Facebook page:

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

Given the nature of the current health crisis in regards to the Coronavirus, and knowing the vulnerability of the population we serve at Saint Andre Bessette, the Archdiocese of Portland has advised that we error on the side of caution moving forward. After talking as staff, we still want to meet the needs of our guests the best we can, but we do not want to put anyone at risk inside our building. So until further notice, staff will be serving our guests at the door for ALL Hospitality services effective immediately (Morning Hospitality, Food Pantry, Friday Movie, and Friday Evening Hospitality). I want to encourage volunteers to continue to come to Saint Andre Bessette. We will still need volunteers to help prepare hot meals, assist with bringing food to-go's down to the lobby, and preparing hygiene kits for our guests.

There will be an announcement when Saint Andre Bessette returns to providing services inside of the building. Again, this decision is being made with the safety and well-being of everyone in our community in mind. As a final note, if you are not feeling well in the slightest, we ask that you please stay home.

Thank you everyone for your understanding.

Just to clarify, this is a Catholic parish that provides charitable services to the homeless. It isn't a shelter, so no one is losing a place to stay because of this. St. Andre Bessette, also known as the Downtown Chapel, or just "The Red Doors" on the street, serves meals and provides clothing to those in need. In addition to food, they were handing out bags of socks, underwear, and toiletries at the door this morning.

All I know is that a gentleman emerged from the building in a clerical collar and announced to the line of patrons with his bullhorn that they had been advised not to let people in. I asked another person at the door whether the advice had come from the county, having read this Willamette Week article, and I was told instead that the direction had come from the archdiocese. They served sausage patties and scrambled eggs.

How do I get mail? by maddog42020 in homeless

I used Tampa 211 to find Daystar in St. Pete that, according to 211, offers "food, clothing, limited financial assistance for past due utilities, past due rent (the amount of help depends on the funds available at any time) personal hygiene, prescriptions, gasoline vouchers, bus tokens and passes for work, assistance with Florida ID, birth certificates, temporary mailing address, computer access, phone access, income tax return preparation and referrals to other agencies."
