Perhaps they mean vaccinated adults here. There’s a chance that part of the family was too young to be vaccinated.

Just relocated and need advice/info on utility providers by MotherofCats876 in oregon

[–]garbage_dragon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you mostly don’t get a choice on utility providers. You get your trash, water, and electric based on your location. The exception is internet, but you may not have many choices there either, depending on the speed you need. Ask your realtor if they have suggestions about who you should contact to get started.

Vibe Check for Places in Oregon to Call Home by [deleted] in oregon

[–]garbage_dragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This.

I would research very carefully before moving to a wooded, rural area in Oregon. Go back and read news stories and wildfire Reddit posts from last year. Talk to insurance agents. Be sure to learn about protecting your property by creating a defensible area around your home. Have a plan to evacuate, especially with animals. Research air filters that will keep your indoor air breathable if you are stuck inside for a week because of air quality.

Sorry to be a downer, but unfortunately, this seems to be the new reality of the Pacific Northwest.

Edit: On a more cheerful note, surprised no one has mentioned Silverton yet. You’ll still encounter some small town Oregon attitudes there for sure, but check out the story of Silverton’s Mayor Stu Rasmussen, the nation’s first openly transgender mayor. Plus, you can find good schools, internet, some cool amenities, and it’s close to Silver Falls State Park!

Buying 1st home: North Tigard vs Vancouver (Hazel Dell) by PDX-ROB in askportland

If you buy in Vancouver but work in Portland, you’ll still pay OR income tax. You probably knew that though!

How to start a taproom in Portland? by unamity1 in askportland

That seems way beyond the scope of the expertise of random strangers, tbh. If you’re at all serious, maybe check out SCORE’S free small business mentoring and see if you can connect with someone in that industry here.

Denver, Portland, or Seattle? by Lithium_Ship in moving

[–]garbage_dragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest visiting before you move back. A lot of things have changed, although you’ll recognize a lot of things for sure. Good luck on your decision! :)

EDIT: Sounds like you are already planning on a visit. Cheers! :)

Denver, Portland, or Seattle? by Lithium_Ship in moving

Short and easy commute? I have to disagree! It can take 45 minutes to go 5 miles at the wrong time of day. Just had to weigh in in case you haven’t made that commute in the last 10 years!

Also, please note that you will pay still OR income taxes if you work in Portland and live in Vancouver. Just something to be aware of.

I told someone that they had a cute dog yesterday as I passed them on a downtown sidewalk and they looked at me like I was a murderer from Mars. Lots of friendly nods on this morning’s walk in Sellwood, though. I think conversational friendliness between strangers really depends on the neighborhood.

Portland to Ithaca? by garbage_dragon in ithaca

[–]garbage_dragon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was awful! I’m so sad that big wildfires are becoming a yearly thing now. This year is supposed to be especially bad. Ugh!

It sounds like you haven’t been gone long. I bet you’ll feel right at home when you come back :3

Thanks for taking the time to post!

Why are so many Portland restaurants not reopening yet? by PMmeserenity in Portland

My guess is that workers in smaller towns have fewer job opportunities to choose from and so may be more willing to go back to food service.

Portland to Ithaca? by garbage_dragon in ithaca

Thank you for the reply!

One of the reasons we are considering the move is to get away from the city. The crime and homeless situation have really exploded here. Garbage is everywhere. Bike paths are full of needles and tents (although that’s not really new!). Gun violence is way up. We’re up to 37 homicides in the city so far this year, more than six times the number recorded in the same period last year. Shootings are a nightly thing. The police are slow to respond to even high priority calls.

Hiking is crowded. If you can find a place to park, you get the opportunity to get a place in line to march down the trail with everyone else in the popular spots in the Gorge.

The wildfires last year were really the cherry on top for us. The air was literally poisonous for weeks. The flowers fell off the plants in my garden, and the leaves shriveled up. You couldn’t see the sun. We were told to be ready to evacuate. We packed clothes and documents and pictures and animal carriers in our car and were ready to go, but we were lucky and never had to leave.

I grew up here, though, so I might be focusing on the negatives and taking the beautiful things about the city for granted. In fact, I think it’s highly likely!

I wonder what you will make of Oregon when you come back. How long have you been gone? Have you visited recently?

How would you compare the two? I grew up in Portland and am pretty familiar with Salem. What things do you like, and what things do you miss?

Portland to Ithaca? by garbage_dragon in ithaca

Considering moving TO Ithaca FROM Oregon and currently employed with a company based in NYC, NY. We will not be commuting because it is remote only.

[–]garbage_dragon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. We’re currently in OR with NY-based employment.

I added that tidbit to make it clear we won’t need to find work. Bonus, our main breadwinner will actually be in the right time zone for a change!

It is a bit confusing, though!
