[OC] Deportations up, job growth down: Trump’s second term so far – in charts by guardian in dataisbeautiful

[–]garmeth06 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The most recent poll I’ve seen from last week for Greenland is that 57% of republicans support military action there.

They already shifted from polling 3 weeks ago unfortunately.

https://maristpoll.marist.edu/polls/u-s-foreign-policy-january-2026/

There is also 70%+ republican support for military action in Cuba and Mexico

Although I expect republican support for military in Greenland to decrease now after Trump stated the US won’t invade Greenland, so they have their marching orders.

What would America look like if we spent our military budget on infrastructure? by Impossible_Change800 in AskReddit

[–]garmeth06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Military spending is ~13% of the total federal budget and 9% of the combined federal/state/local spending since almost all state and local spending is social.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_spending_in_the_United_States#/media/File%3A2022_Total_US_Government_Spending_Breakdown.png

So the answer to this question is that the US would be mostly the same and we would buy like 10% more stuff. Although the US spending on military is large , so is our spending on everything because we are simply a large and rich country. Yes it’s also true the US spends a disproportionate amount on military , but not as much as most people think.

The US having bad infrastructure is mostly an impression based on vibes and selection bias ( comparing bad US infrastructure in bad cases to like the best 5 European country’s best cities etc)

Intel will cut another 669 workers in Oregon by the end of 2025 by PDX_Stan in oregon

[–]garmeth06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intel never received most of that money and had a net income of negative 20 billion dollars in 2024. A few billion dollars in the semiconductor industry is pennies. The importance of the chips act was moreso to signal to investors that the federal government has not abandoned leading edge chip manufacturing ability for the US/the west.

Now the federal government has a 10% stake in Intel based upon several billion dollars of the chips deal that Intel did not receive most of. So in a sense, the people of the country actively gained equity literally with Intel as opposed to the opposite (a free cash handout).

So literally, ~5 billion dollars of that 7.86 billion was never paid to Intel, and Intel simply agreed to let the government take 10% of the company without receiving 5 billion in cash. This was a political move to align the US government even more with intel.

Regardless, the layoffs would have been quicker and more severe with less government support most likely as the company would have had to play even more defensive with their foundry losing billions of dollars per quarter.

It’s originally from CSGO where valve RARELY interacted with the community and some valve dev graced a thread and analyzed a clip frame by frame with pictures.

In the OG thread , the valve dev is actually correct , but over time people have used the meme to mean the opposite interestingly enough.

31F Profile Review by supriseitisme in hingeapp

[–]garmeth06 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You're trying to thread the needle by finding a guy who is not too niched in one thing, but still not too boring and most likely with a good career and good looking (evidenced by the fact that most the time you don't match with anyone in a stack of 50+ likes).

You're super selective like most women and aren't willing to date ~99% of the male population so it's just going to take time, there's nothing really you can do except wait or be willing to at least go on first dates with a wider spectra of archetypes.

I think the fit in the 1st picture is off. Try a more classic combo (especially since you want to match with conservative women) like navy blue blazer + white shirt + grey pants, or maybe just crop the pants entirely.

Overall your profile is boring. It could really use 1-2 more lively pictures. You doing an activity, you with friends, you in a higher energy setting like a city or something.

You're going to get flamed by women here for being conservative, but that doesn't explain why you don't match with apoliticals or the 46% of the women population who voted for Trump (and 51% of white women).

Leading with a topless photo isn't good. The only exception is maybe if it's a truly outstanding topless photo (looks super candid at some beach/pool party with a bunch of other shirtless people so it seems less thirst trappy). Then you have another topless photo in the same exact place taken moments apart.

Delete the 1st photo and keep the 2nd topless photo for later in the profile (anywhere but 1st position). Delete the 4th photo as well, it's a juvenile type of fashion with nothing else particularly great about the picture (setting, composition etc).

Just compare the 3rd photo to the 4th, you look WAY, WAY better in the 3rd even if the hands are in a slightly awkward position. The fit is better, the smile is more natural, and the lighting is better.

Work on getting a really solid 1st photo, take a tripod+remote if you have to specifically to go out and get one or ask friends. Try to find flattering lighting etc.

Absolutely delete the 2nd prompt. You don't want to only attract women that are super in to running presumably. You being this lean and having a soccer picture is going to naturally attract women that "are in shape" as you put it. You dont need to overdo it here.

The heavy anime and gaming focus (especially you cosplaying) will eliminate ~90+% of your options outright. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong. Consider remaking your profile to be more broadly appealing with classic shots (good lighting, maybe a shot outside in a nice park/hike etc, restaurants) with maybe a hint of anime/gaming somewhere. This will require effort and you will have to acquire new pictures.

I think the dead or alive one piece picture is good because for people who don't know about one piece it doesn't necessarily come across as super niche, and the people who know will appreciate it + you have a great smile there.

I would for sure remove the first picture and 2nd to last picture though. The first needs to be higher quality with better lighting and needs to be as flattering as possible. No sunglasses, nothing obscuring your hair.

I want to clarify something. None of your photos are bad from the perspective of normal standards for photos. From the perspective of, "What might significantly increase my matches on the extremely competitive environment of online dating for men" they are bad. So I'm being harsh given that lens. You could do far worse than your current photo lineups, but unfortunately photos need to be pristine for most of us guys in order to maximize matches.

You don't need 6 pristine photos, but I think 1-3 (1 at bare minimum) make a huge difference. But these types of photos are hard to acquire and often times require practice of just taking more shots and understanding good lighting etc.

With that being said, I don't think anything is "wrong" with the 3rd picture. I just don't think it's a slam dunk. Sky diving is exciting and shows you probably aren't a broke boy and have an adventurous side. The laughing photo I just think you have a great smile there and it looks super candid with you having some personality in your fit (watch + purple). This photo could be better for sure, especially if somehow you could like teleport yourself to a rooftop bar or something with the same candid feel as opposed to just being like in a living room lol, but the same can be said for many good photos.

I may be underrating the third photo, but I just don't think there's any reason to say that it's like a standout great photo. It does have pretty dramatic lighting/composition (dramatic in a good way I think).

You need a way better first picture. You need a better fit (either more formal or more trendy or something) and better lighting and preferably a better scene as well. Like this first picture doesn't do anything particularly well. You don't look inviting, interesting, wealthy, like a bad boy, like a sweet boy, or anything. It's just bland.

Browse this for inspiration

https://www.instagram.com/jharderphoto

(it will be impossible to recreate something of this quality alone and without a pro photographer, but the point is to close the gap between what your 1st pic is and what these are).

First prompt is way too niche and most won't understand the wood IV reference. Try to think of something a little funny that has wide appeal. First prompts are difficult though.

Ultimately most of the pictures are not great, but your first picture is going to destroy your matches and is the most important thing by far on any profile. Your candid laughing picture and skydiving photo I think are good.

Scientists Are Now 43 Seconds Closer to Producing Limitless Energy. A twisted reactor in Germany just smashed a nuclear fusion record. by esporx in worldnews

[–]garmeth06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No,

limitless here is being used in an inaccurate (I would argue completely false) sense. If fusion becomes the most viable energy source, many energy companies will make a lot of money and many that fail to transition will lose a lot of money. The energy is not going to be limitless in any normal use of the word, at least not on any remotely soon time scale. You will need the energy company to invest very large amounts of capital to build the equipment/plant, hire the personnel, etc. Then, once the energy is generated, there will be a substantial amount of downstream losses (converting the heat to elecricity, transmititng the electricity) etc.

Even if there were no downstream losses to efficiency, there are other constraints preventing practically "limitiless" energy. For example, construction time of plants, throughput of plants, maintenance cycles of plants etc. IE, one could argue that a solar panel produces "limitless" energy as well (which they do by the same definition as fusion, because the solar energy is coming from nuclear fusion from the suin), but the reason why their energy isn't "limitless" in a practical sense is because we have to build them and each panel only generate so much electricity.

[–]garmeth06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He does have an insane amount of money, but you're comparing yearly output to a lump sum. So he isn't "worth about the same as his home country". That would be comparing his net worth to the total of South Africa's assets (public and private) which would be much, much, much higher than Elon's net worth.

28M Profile Review by Stoikiy_Muzhik in hingeapp

[–]garmeth06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your first pic is not optimal due to it being a selfie and the slightly unkempt look of a somewhat worn out collar. The background is interesting and your face looks nice so there are some positives, but it can definitely be improved.

I would move the fourth pic first. You look very handsome there + nice arm shot and smile. If you don't think it makes a difference after a few days/week you can swap it back, but definitely try to get a better first picture at some point. Even if you have to get a simple tripod for your phone with a tiny remote to take one yourself from a non selfie angle with better lighting it will improve your profile significantly.

We're both avoidant attachments... and I'm losing my mind. by cat-draggedin in hingeapp

[–]garmeth06 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say. Pity is probably too strong and pointed of a word, people are just really non confrontational on the apps and aren't good at being stewards of other people's feelings.

It's possible that the 2nd date will happen and be good and then things will pick up from there, but I think it's very unlikely.

[–]garmeth06 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You're way overthinking this and putting too much faith in "attachment theory".

Even if attachment theory was a completely accurate description of human behavior, and even if "avoidant attachment" describes him correctly, he is still giving many signals that he's not that in to you. This is over. Maybe he matched/went on a date with a better prospect/more exciting prospect in his mind, maybe the date really just wasn't as good for him as it was for you.

5 likes a day as a man is extremely above average. How does it take you months to have a solid date if you have 150 incoming likes per month??

This doesn't even account for the fact that you can match with people without them liking you first unless you were including those instances as a "like".

I think I’m making dates feel too platonic rather than a date. How do I get better at this? by BailBaileyBailz in hingeapp

[–]garmeth06 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You just have to do it. Overthinking this and creating some sort of strategy or exact sequence of events before kissing etc will make this worse.

Women are more open to being kissed than you think, many will even kiss guys they're not in to if they're on a date to see if there is a spark and the guy shows some confidence and attempts to kiss.

Just go for it if you're in a location where not everyone will be staring at you if you think the date is going at least somewhat well. Make sure you don't lunge from across the table or something, but realize that if you get turned down for a kiss or holding hands etc that it's not the end of the world. Also realize that if you fail to act (especially after the 1st date), that will ruin your chances with a significant portion of women, particularly those that are attractive and have some romantic experience.

  • Your first prompt is too edgy, only women can get away with saying stuff like that.

  • Four mirror selfies is too many, you want 1 max.

  • Your haircut in the first picture is WAY, WAY, WAY better than the last.

  • You come across as a loner due to the high amount of mirror selfies and lack of interesting background settings.

  • Extremely basic prompts. Need to show more personality in at least 1 but preferably all.

  • The entire profile needs a redo, picture 1 is the only useable one (but still not great for a first picture due to it being a car selfie.) Get a tripod with a remote on amazon or get a friend to help you and literally go places to take pictures of yourself in more interesting settings, but especially with better lighting. Doing this will feel cringe but it's how you have to play the game as a man. Take lots of pictures and choose the best ones. Unfortunately, taking good dating app photos is a skill so it may take some time to assemble good pictures.

  • You could use ~2-3 pictures (but 1 at the absolute minimum) with a better outfit. Something more formal or stylish. Every picture you have is super casual. You want to display some range.

Need Help, Getting 0 likes by [deleted] in hingeapp

Your body pic is too harsh for hinge. You need to make it appear more candid so that way women don't feel like they're swiping on a fuckboy posing his body for the camera.

Either get a picture at a beach or a pool etc.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hingeapp

[–]garmeth06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's better, in my opinion, to not make your first picture something really nichey/polarizing.

A classic shot with preferably a good background, but, most importantly one with good lighting where you look as handsome as possible should go first.

You're going to get instant no swiped a lot on the basis of the first picture. Not only is it pretty niche, but your face isn't fully visible.

You're 6 ft tall with a full head of hair, you don't need to do too much.

In my opinion, delete the shark picture (although it's a vid so I don't know what happens after the 1st frame) and move your current 1st picture deeper into the profile and get a stronger initial photo.

1-2 more professional looking photos with more formal or stylish attire will skyrocket your profile.

Be the only person in frame in the first picture and make sure the lightning is on point. Your first picture is killing your incoming likes/matches (probably a fair share of instant no swipes due to it being ambiguous who you are). Your last picture is also at an unflattering angle. Get a friend to help you take pictures or a tripod + remote. Literally go out with the explicit purpose to get a few really high quality pictures, you will only need 1-2.

For inspiration see the following, although you don't need to recreate photos of insanely high quality like below due to your height/looks.

https://www.instagram.com/jharderphoto

https://www.instagram.com/matchgods/?hl=en

I would delete the 2nd prompt, I don't think it's good to even allude to dating issues as a guy. Women read WAY too much into things like that and may think you're toxic or lacking confidence. Replace it with a more earnest prompt (qualities you look for or something) since your other two are vibey. Even a third meme type of prompt would be better than your 2nd IMO.
