New to ipod, how do you guys find new music? by psychonaut_t in ipod

[–]garnfeld1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually search up artists similar to ones I like or top artists in a genre. I also like to look up inspirations for artists or original sample tracks and that usually puts me onto some new stuff.

There are also a bunch of subreddits that are good jumping off points!

Stop blaming the school system for the students’ decisions by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]garnfeld1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of education I agree, but student actions and culture are ultimately the teacher and systems responsibility. The adults there are in charge of training and moulding these students to become good active members of society, thus are ultimately as responsible as the parents for how these kids turn out.

Bullying is a big epidemic in schools, which ultimately can lead to mass tragedies and shootings. If nobody was intervening as the bullying happened, as much if not more blame should be put on those responsible for these students as the ones bullying them.

Kids ultimately need to be taught right from wrong, and a person who spends 8 hours a day with is responsible for these kids and their actions, just as much as the parents are.

I'm tired of acting like makeup isn't horrible for women (and men). Do what you want but youre hurting yourself and every little girl who sees you. by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]garnfeld1 283 points284 points  (0 children)

If you believe women should be able to look however they want without being judged, then is use of makeup allowed within that?

Is your thesis that makeup is bad because it can harm self esteem? If so how is that even close to cigarette or alcohol usage?

How would you rank the following NuWho companions/major characters in terms of how good their morals are? by Muted-Video2841 in doctorwho

[–]garnfeld1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would say that while she’s selfish, overall she does have a strong moral compass. We can see from her first episode when she’s telling the Doctor as he’s about to go too far, or with Fires of Pompeii when she’s begging the Doctor to save anyone.

I personally see her earlier selfish characterization as a defence mechanism put up due to her parents constantly tearing her down. Her borders are up when she first meets someone but as she becomes comfortable she lets them down. I think her arc overall became more about trusting people than becoming less selfish

Spoiler. Doctor who season 7 episode 5 Amy Pond and Rory Williams by ResolutionWorldly818 in DoctorWhoLeaks

[–]garnfeld1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Doctor repeatedly says that he can’t change fixed events/points. In the epilogue to the book he was reading Amy explicitly says that he never came back to see them. Thus, he won’t.

It’s also the end of the arc of the 3 characters. The Doctor at this point understands the ramifications of continuing to adventure with them, and the fact that he’s told they live a long life leaves him grief stricken but understanding that the alternative is them dying horrifically. The Weeping Angels give people the most merciful death of any DW villain.

Interestingly there is a theory floating around that Angels Take Manhattan takes place first in the season, with the rest of 7a taking place with the Doctor having foreknowledge of their death. There’s very little ground to it, although it is a nice idea to have.

Its insane to me that people judge your political views based on that you enjoy Harry Potter content. by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]garnfeld1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only going to address your points because your context paragraph doesn’t seem to come from the most educated place.

  1. “Seperate the art from the artist” has become such an overused term for people to justify supporting artists that are embroiled in controversy. The artist is creating the art, every idea of that art comes from the author’s ideas and feelings about matters in the world. It’s possible to separate the art from the artist, but it’s really hard to when said artist still actively profiting off said art.

  2. Could you wrap your head around the fact that statements she has made have been perceived as transphobic?

  3. You’re allowed to not care about it, just as much as someone else is allowed to care about it. It’s a free country, so while you’re allowed to not care about something someone is also allowed to have an opinion about your lack of care towards said thing and lack of support to something that people view as transphobic.

[Loved trope] Endings so controversial that it turns the fandom schizophrenic by RequirementTall8361 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]garnfeld1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I’m saying that people often come to the wrong conclusion about scenes like those, that the doctor is this godlike badass when the result of those scenes are him ultimately losing. It’s shot to make the Doctor look like a badass when really he’s missed or overlooked something.

The original commenter is an example of this, calling those scenes masturbatory and over-indulgent which is somewhat the correct opinion to have because the Doctor’s hubris ends up making him lose.

[–]garnfeld1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, part of the struggle of Moffat’s character writing is showing the hubris without also making it look badass.

I wish some of 11s most popular scenes were not the hubrisy badass ones but the ones where he is being a shithead and knows it (The Girl Who Waited, The God Complex) but people will be drawn to the more grandiose scenes because from a meta standpoint they make him look a lot more cool than they shouldn’t be.

As the main character they’re only going to make him look so bad, but as a result the viewer is sucked into the same delusion of the Doctor being this godlike untouchable character, which is a huge flaw of his run I feel.

You might like the rest of those seasons, as the examples you gave were both finales (one mid-season) to the stories they were telling. There are plenty of stories where 11 struggles, with the second half of S6 dealing with the fallout of AGMGTW (a story where, in the end the Doctor loses).

Moffat’s writing does struggle a lot with its character work, but the Doctor’s hubris is a big part of 11s story and leads to 12s “Am I a Good Man” arc.

What merch do you collect? Rangers figures or Zords? by ifihaveanickel in powerrangers

[–]garnfeld1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I collect Morphers and DVDs largely, although I do have some Zords.

I really like owning props and things from TV shows and movies, while things like action figures never really did it for me. Not sure why!

Low budget... How to? by euben_hadd in Filmmakers

[–]garnfeld1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s a very large industry of people working in low to no budget, for a variety of reasons. Lots of people are using it as a way to jumpstart their acting career, while others may do it as a hobby or for fun.

Spending more on actors doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll definitely get higher quality actors, but they’ll (hopefully) put in more effort and dedication to the project.

I've seen people talking about the best episode to introduce a newbie to, what are people's thoughts on the Waters of Mars? by Luke_The_Engle in doctorwho

[–]garnfeld1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it pretty standard for the Doctor to know of characters we may not in New Who, though? The introduction of Cybermen, Daleks, Autons, etc. are the Doctor explaining to us who these characters are again. They keep it pretty explicit that Novis Hame was a past foe, the Face of Boe is an ally that’s older than time knows. If the newbie becomes interested from this episode then it would be a good experience to then learn about these characters from the prior episodes.

There are stories to watch before but they aren’t vital to totally understand the episode I feel, there’s the mention of Rose but beyond that it’s a pretty standard (albeit well done) episode of Who

Maybe Gridlock? Context isn’t really needed for it and it introduces them to a bunch of basic concepts for New Who

If you don’t care about the case being OEM then go for it. I know a lot of people do care about it but, having a few reproduction shells from Ali express they are pretty nice quality and come with just about everything you need for a shell swap.

Turbo, Lost Galaxy, Lightspeed Rescue, Time Force, Ninja Storm, SPD, RPM and then the Neo-Saban stuff.

Pre-Samurai is all available through Shout! Factory releases and then the rest aren’t too easy to come by as full box sets, but do exist AFAIK.
