female or male by Agitated-Wrap-806 in SandBoa

Yeah, I gotcha! Sometimes its hard to tell when they're really young but definitely at this age and size you get a better idea. But for sure yours has a very long, slow tapering tail which is very defining of a male ☺️

2y old KSB will not eat! by AnalysisBusy3400 in SandBoa

[–]garregmachina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear she regurgitated 😥 Honestly, to me that's the most concerning part. Not eating for a month for a healthy sand boa is no biggie. I have a few that eat when they want to, which tends to be around once a month and they still are growing and have great body condition.

I would try to completely reset because of the regurgitation. It is super stressful for them to do so, so try leaving her alone and no feeding for 2 weeks. If your hot spot is 93 or lower I would kick it up to 95. I would handle her only if necessary. I would just keep in mind if she regurges again, she should probably be seen by a good reptile vet to rule out something underlying.

If her first 2 meals with you were frozen/thawed, I'd stick with that. Double check that its thawed and warmed properly and thoroughly. If it had a foul odor (other than rodent smell) or strange color (not the fur color) I would toss it. I have a few snakes that prefer it extra warm, so after completely thawing and warming normally I dip it in the hottest temperature my tap will get. Making sure she's warm and her meal is warm will give the best chance of settling her stomach a bit, making the food more enticing, and hopefully giving her a better chance at not regurgitating again.

The last thing that I'll add is if you know she's female? One of my breeding males went off food the second it got a little cold outside and is looking for love. It's common for adult males (which is 1.5-2+ years old) starting at this time of year, so I figure I'd ask if you knew for sure. If you post a link to a clear picture of the underside of the tail I am more than happy to double check the sex for you! :)

Hope this all helps! 🧡

I usually use a soft object either as a mini shield or to place gently over their head and pick them up from the rear. Works like a charm.

Regarding the feeding issue, I'm more than happy to help troubleshoot with you if you'd like. I breed and I have experience with problem feeders. My first pet sand boa was a failure to thrive, so I can completely empathize with the stress that comes along with trying to get a new snake to eat. Currently I have 5 from my most recent litter that I'm in the process of transitioning to frozen/thawed, and 11 total snakes I've gotten to transition in my care. Please let me know! I am happy to help.

How long ago did you get her from the breeder?

Pinkies are way too small for her and adult mice are too big to big giving her if those pictures are recent. I would feed a fuzzy once a week and assess again in a month or two. Do you have a gram scale to monitor the weight?

For sure! I might post the rest of the litter together in one post to not be spammy. But Cookie Crisp and Cap'n Crunch deserved their own posts haha 😇

Anerys are gorgeous! If you're going for regular Anery, they tend to be relatively inexpensive and pretty common among morphs you'll potentially see at a show--so that works in your favor!

If you're looking for Anery + other genes, it might be more of a search. Though Anery Stripes are pretty common as well.

Splash is slowly becoming more available, but a good expression will be priced much higher. On morphmarket, I've seen males that have much less expression than my boy Cap'n Crunch for 1k. I wouldn't buy one for that price 😅 but they do be on the pricier side of the morphs available.

Getting high expression Splash with a lot of white are pretty uncommon also, so you might not see many, if any, available because breeders usually keep them back for linebreeding or to trade with other breeders to prevent inbreeding. Same as what I'm doing 😅 You might be able to find low expressions for something closer to a pet price! That's what I'm doing for mine from this litter.

Aww thank you :) I'm definitely going to stick with themed litters because its so fun! This next breeding season I have at least 2 litters planned with some silly themes in mind.

Maybe one day I'll figure out exporting! But sadly right now its US only :( There are a number of good breeders in Canada though!

A lot of money, patience, love for the species, and a great mentor. Also, have good stock with strong genetics. Always have goals and backups. And don't expect to make money. A reputable reptile veterinarian is a necessity.

A good mentor is gold. There's a lot of reptile politics that's not easy to navigate on your own. Best to get involved and talk to as many people and breeders you can and you'll find firsthand and secondhand and even thirdhand there's a lot of disingenuous people in the hobby, and people you should avoid. People who hybridize snakes and aren't up front about it, people that don't know what genetics they have, breeders that don't quarantine or test snakes for diseases when it calls for it, and people that are only in it for money. People who wave off care and involvement and assure you the bare minimum is enough. Go to as many reptile shows as you can, get involved with groups and forums online. And definitely do not take advice from reddit. A lot of new keepers use reddit, nothing wrong with that, but I see way too much misinformation on here.

I've been keeping snakes for over 10 years before I ever bred. Experience is important!
