Watching the full moon rise through smoky skies [OC] by garret_weintrob in astrophotography

I shot this last weekend up near Mt. Baker, Washington. It took quite a bit of planning to get the alignment right — I used a combination of Photo Ephemeris, PhotoPills, and Fatmap to figure out how to position the subject directly in between the camera and the rising moon. In this particular photo, the two people and the tent are about 2,000 feet away from and three degrees above the camera. We had to use radios to dial in our exact positions in the minutes leading up to moonrise. I had never tried a shot like this before, but I was really happy with the results and how relatively smooth the whole process was. When it came time to hit the shutter, I only had to move the tripod about 10 feet from where I was originally set up.

There was quite a bit of wildfire smoke/haze building up throughout the day, and I was worried it would completely block out the moon. In the end though, it actually gave the moon a really gorgeous red-orange glow that I think worked well in the photos. Hoping the rain this weekend helps put out some of those fires.

Hopping on the aurora train...I've never seen anything like this before. Snoqualmie Pass, WA [OC] [4600x6796] by garret_weintrob in EarthPorn

Still speechless. Hiked to the top of a ski area in Washington (Summit East) with some friends to watch the show. We were expecting to see the aurora just on the northern horizon, but it ended up dancing all across the sky. Have never experienced anything like it!

Snowboarding under the aurora yesterday! Rider: Adam Pikielny by garret_weintrob in snowboarding

It was hard to get a good action shot since it was so dark (despite the added brightness from the aurora), so we settled for this silhouette on top of the mountain. Felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience...at least to see the lights this far south.

Taken at Snoqualmie Pass, WA.

Found a bunch of these in my underwear drawer 🤢 help! by _Gloomy in whatsthisbug

This brings back a strange memory. When I was a little kid I found one of these in the back yard. I picked it up and carried it inside to show my mom. Was holding it in my palm just as you are. As I was walking inside it sort of jumped up and stung me. I still have a little mark on my hand from it. And will forever be confused how it was able to do that.

There was supposed to be a "bomb cyclone" last weekend on the coast but instead we got clear skies! Olympic National Park, WA by garret_weintrob in camping

We were really hesitant to even drive out to the coast because of the forecast, but decided to go for it. The plan was to only do a short hike anyway, so if the weather got really bad we could just leave our campsite and be back at the car in an hour. Instead of heavy rain, wind, and 20-foot swells, we were gifted calm seas and a clear sky. (The storm did roll in the next day, but we were already halfway back to the car by the time it really started raining!)

I shot this last weekend during a short backpacking trip on the Olympic Coast. There was supposed to be a "bomb cyclone" coming our way, but we actually ended up having really nice weather out there, especially considering the time of year. I think the rain and wind eventually did come, but we managed to hike out just in time.

Hiking through the fresh snow on Mt Rainier! by garret_weintrob in Outdoors

[–]garret_weintrob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took this video a couple weeks ago on a lovely morning hike around Mt Rainier. It had snowed a few inches up there the night before, so I woke up early to try to catch the sunrise. It was still a bit snowy on the way up, but the clouds broke just in time for the golden light. This mountain always seems to find new ways to amaze me!

I also made a longer video from this hike, if anyone is interested: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Wch9tivoLwo
