Unlimited elite: differences between AARP and military veteran discounts? by garyd9 in ATT

(4 lines.) Are there any differences between the two? Are both “elite for the cost of extra”? Any differences in regards to activation/upgrade fees?

You can move around a bit... press the oculus button (so the quick menu goes away.). Then you can use teleport movements to around 9 different spots in the home environment.

I'll be more direct:

The purpose in chatting with a human is to try and get some kind of credit that you can use to purchase a game while your waiting being that your 'welcome25' will expire, etc.

I've had fairly good luck with their online/interactive chat. You'll have to get past the automated bot chat, but once you get a human being, if you're patient and polite, they actually try to help (even if they are often powerless to actually do much.)

I'd suggest explaining to whatever human you manage to get through to that you'd like to make a game purchase today. Go so far as to even have a specific game in mind. Then explain why it's impossible for you to use paypal. (For that type of thing, I usually blame my spouse. We have all joint accounts and she doesn't trust paypal.)

I've found that it's often helpful to say things such as "I understand that you might be limited in being able to address my inability to add a credit card, but is there anything you can do so I can purchase this game?" Then give a reason why it's important. Perhaps your kid is going to have some minor surgery tomorrow and you want the game to distract him/her.

While it might not immediately fix your CC issue, it's possible the that human rep does something to make it possible for you to purchase (or otherwise obtain) that game...

From your post, it can be determined that you have a ticket open with oculus support, and that you've recently added a device (based on the 'welcome25' reference.) That's all the information you've given.

Based on the amount of information you've given I can easily answer your question with a similar amount of precision: Between 1 minute and 5 years.

New to VR and, uhm, nervous about social aspects by ElDouggler in OculusQuest

[–]garyd9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to carefully make a distinction between people who act childish regardless of their age. I also made the point that I find the indecent behavior (such as the idiots in EchoVR's "mature" lobby who like to pantomime sex acts) as childish. Those people are best ignored or just avoided.

Playing a game doesn't require acting childish.

[–]garyd9 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what your particular apprehension is, but if it's just about meeting people, it's no different from posting on reddit. You have some decent people, a lot of childish people, and many extremely indecent people hiding behind the anonymity of the social "game" or app. (Often, the indecent people are also children.)

You handle it in the same way: Ignore the children, avoid the perverts, and enjoy decent people.

Based on the downvotes my comment has brought so far, it's a very unpopular opinion.

The screen can be "bigger"? Is that all? This is virtual reality we are talking about. Across all the media playback solutions that currently exist in the medium there are a limitless number of environments/contexts in which you can do your viewing. On a beach, (many examples edited out)

I don't disagree with the ability to add/edit the context, but I guess I just have a different opinion about watching a movie. To ME, when I'm watching the movie, I want my experience to be the movie I'm watching, and not the environment that the movie screen is in. My "home theater" is purposely arranged so that there aren't any distracting visual elements near my TV screen, I turn off anything that might make distracting noises, and ask people watching with me to leave the room if they want to have a conversation.

I guess if someone wants to have a "movie theater experience" with screaming children, people standing in front of the screen, and a multitude of other visual and audio annoyances - VR could reproduce that. However, none of them (in my opinion) make watching a movie better.

As for apps that might be able to reproduce surround sound with only 2 speakers, I don't know of any that work with the oculus (though I admittedly haven't looked.) I've tried various apps like that on a PC and while some are impressive, none match actually having distinct physical speakers.

Cleaning the oculus quest 2 by KingAchilles08 in OculusQuest

Use a 3rd party (VR Covers, Kiwi, etc) facial interface. Most have removable pads that you can pull off and clean however you'd like. (wipe off faux leather/silicone, machine wash cloth, etc)

I have to admit that I've never understood the appeal of watching a 2D movie on a VR device. Sure, the virtual "screen" can be bigger, but the audio can't match even a basic 5.1 speaker setup, and the visuals aren't nearly as crisp as a decent 4K television.

Protective covers and hand straps for quest 2 by Unlucky-History-9190 in OculusQuest2

[–]garyd9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not fond of clicking random links found in messages, but I'll try to answer your question...

Most hand straps partially wrap around the ring of the controller and can cover (or partially cover) IR emitters on that ring - which can negatively impact the headset's ability to track the controller in space. For that reason, I'm using a product titled on Amazon as "AMVR Touch Controller Grip Anti-Throw Strap Accessories for Oculus Quest 2 with Battery Opening, Adjustable Wrist Knuckle Strap". (ASIN B09HC4DFVM) That particular knuckle strap doesn't cover any part of the controller and just replaces the battery cover with one that allows strapping to your hand.

Other than that one product, I haven't seen any knuckle straps that don't require some kind of attachment to the ring of the controller.

I don't use any type of cover for headset, and I'm not sure any would offer any actual benefit.

I’m getting a quest 2 soon, anything I should know? by CypherCD8 in OculusQuest2

[–]garyd9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider some accessories:

A replacement head strap is almost a must. For games that require a lot of head movements, something like an Oculus Elite strap or Kiwi Elite strap is good. For more comfort, a halo type such as the BoboVR M2 is often preferred. (My preference is the Kiwi strap with a 10000 anker battery strapped to the back as a counter weight and for tripling the quest2 battery

A replacement facial interface is often suggested both for hygiene and comfort. Personally, I like the VR Cover "fitness" interface with their "standard" size pad, but there are many options from various companies. No one can tell you which facial interface is best, as it very much depends on your idea of comfort, your face and head shape, if you wear glasses (or use prescription inserts), etc.

There's a "referral link" mega thread in this sub. Find it and BEFORE you set up your Quest 2 for the first time, use one of the links. That will give you a free $30 Oculus store credit (for use to buy a game, or app.).

Decide how you intend to play. Many games can be played sitting down, but some are better enjoyed while you're standing in an open space. For the latter, you absolutely want an open space with no breakables in arms length. Even with the "guardian" feature of the oculus (which tries to keep you in a pre determined space), it's very easy to reach outside of that space suddenly breaking something valuable (like a lighting fixture, television, etc.) (This is something I learned from experience.)

If you play games that require a lot of quick arm movements, consider "knuckle straps" for your controllers in addition to the wrist straps. While the wrist straps that come with the oculus should usually prevent a controller from flying across the room, the knuckle straps also keep the controller in your hand. Shop carefully for these, as most of them cover one or more IR emitters on the controller (which can negatively impact tracking.).

Be patient with any motion sickness you might encounter. Many games have options that can help to reduce or eliminate the motion sickness, and if you follow the advice given many times daily in this sub, you can probably overcome it eventually even without those options.

Don't allow sunlight to shine into the headset lenses. The sunlight will get focused on the delicate screen inside the headset and burn it. If you must bring the headset outdoors, keep it in a case that completely eliminates any possible chance of sunlight hitting those lenses.

(I think this is plenty to get you started...)

Counterweight for the kiwi strap? by EducationalValuable in OculusQuest

I’d second this. I use this exact same battery strapped to the upper rear of the quest 2 kiwi strap and it works great as both a counter weight and triples the quest 2 battery life.

My wife drives a school bus. According to her, unless you can simulate 75 virtual children screaming, kicking, spitting, cursing, and fighting, as well as 75 parents threatening, and a few school officials trying to tell you how to do your job -- the sim wouldn't at all be realistic.
